I'll never understand why Crouch wasn't used more for England. His record Is up there with Greaves. And he is much better on the deck than he is given credit for.

22 goals in 42 games is a very good record and Crouch can be proud of that, but up there with Greaves? Greaves scored 44 in 57, only outscored by Lineker and Charlton and has a much better goal per game than either of them or any of the other very high scorers for England. I appreciate the support for an ex player but don't make a mockery of your own argument with such an outlandish comparison.

I think you will find only Greaves and Lineker have a better goals to games ratio in international games. That's why I wrote it. I'm not a fanboy of crouch but facts are facts.

He is an incredible striker at international level.

Stick to your Benny love mate I thought you were never replying me again?

Crouch and Greaves in the same sentance?

Greaves is one of the finest strikers to put a pair of boots on, Crouch one of the.... Tallest.

I appreciate you can't compare the two in a real sense. Let's be honest. But you can look at their contribution to England and Crouchy stands up in his performances. I've never seen Greaves play but I've heard enough from uncles and my dad to know he was possibly the greatest England striker ever. I'm not saying Crouch is by a long shot but I do think he was under utilised.

Cracking article, enjoyed reading it.

For me, the biggest farce of England selections were dropping King for Terry in 2004 and of course leaving Defoe at home for the 17 year old Walcott in 2006. Both were appalling decisions and smack of an F.A. driven England team which ever since Hoddle was sacked have been far too involved and clearly to a major detriment to the progress of our national team.

Nothing in that sense will change until the FA learn to get it right with their head coach selections and show some bravery in doing so. Harry should have been given the job instead of Roy, we all know it and if he had then you can bet that we would be playing far better football.

Whether you're bitter or not towards Harry for what happened with Spurs is largely irrelevant. It would be hard to deny that he could do a good job with England and I, for one, would have loved to have seen what he could do.

Totally agree. As much as I dislike Redknapp there's no doubt over a 7 game period like the wc is he is the one man that could get the most out of a team in that period. His problem would be the interim years talking utter shit as they qualified. Unfortunately that factor outweighs his skill in the 4 weeks to the powers that be. I see their point. Its a shame that we will never see it. Its a bit like Brian Clough.

He has to name them now. If not, he's frankly despicable, as he's leaving a shadow hanging over a number of players who may not deserve it, and who he worked very closely with.

And yes, great piece

Maybe he should name them, and also clarify the reasons why. Injured, long trip not to play, wife or girlfriend expecting a baby, sick relative.. very different to 'I don't want to play'.

Hopefully this won't be a distraction from the real inquest.

Roy should answer why he took Oxlade-Chamberlain when he insisted beforehand he wouldn't take injured players, why Ashley Cole was left behind and Luke Shaw not used, and why he told Barkley to curb the instincts that make him such an exciting prospect.

You can't compare crouch and greaves. You just cant. I like crouch and he was effective at what he did. He did very well given the limited opportunities at international level but look at who he scored against and the games he played in - none of the managers trusted him against the big guns and he scored most of his goals in qualifying against what I would describe as minnows and also in friendlies agains average teams. The only decent team he scored against was france as far as I can recollect. They just couldn't handle his height and this unsettled them defensively. The better teams were able to contain him. He does have a great scoring record at international level but is not a true great like jimmy.

This really winds me up.
They sound like a bunch of selfish, spoilt millionaires to me.

They probably would of made more of an effort if they were getting payed more!
