    SPURS NEWS:

Jermain Defoe is sensing that "something special" will happen at White Hart Lane this season as Tottenham head into 2007 still involved on four fronts.

The 24-year-old scored the winner against Southend to fire Spurs into the Carling Cup semi-final, and they are also in the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup.

Martin Jol's men will face Cardiff in the FA Cup next month and are also chasing the Champions League place they missed out on last season when rivals Arsenal pipped them to fourth place in the Premiership on the final day of the campaign.

"We're still in all competitions and we want it to stay that way," said Defoe. "If we can win something this season it would be great for everyone.

"If we can finish strongly it would be great. We're picking up now with everyone playing well and the way we are playing breeds confidence.

"Something special can happen and you just know that - we've simply got to keep playing."

Southend pushed Spurs all the way on Wednesday evening but Defoe broke the deadlock in extra-time with his 10th goal of the season.

The England striker has reached double figures despite spending time on the bench at the start of the campaign - his tally for the season has come from his last 12 starts.

With Robbie Keane sidelined until next month with a knee injury, Defoe's partnership with Dimitar Berbatov is starting to develop. The Bulgaria striker has weighed in with 10 goals himself.

"It's good but I want to keep it going and don't want to get complacent or think too much about it," said Defoe. "Hopefully I can get a few more.

"Berba is such a silky player. He's got great touch and we've linked up really well. I've enjoyed playing alongside him, he shows good movement and is on fire at the moment."

Defoe added in the matchday programme: "You can really make a pairing work when you get a few games together. I think we've got a little understanding and it is showing."

As long as they keep scoring together, there is no need to change anything.

We need to play our strongest team in every game possible. Wednesday's little performance showed that although we do have a large squad, there certainly isn't much strength in depth!

What a change in attitude from the little man...keep in up Defoe

I dont think it is a change in attitude, its just the papers that have said he wanted to leave, but they never added any quotes.

But still the last time we heard him say somthing like this must of been when he just signed for us.

Lets hope your right little man. It's about time the mighty Spurs got something to add to our trophy cabinet.

as far as i've seen defoe's constantly coming out with good things to asy, he always says all the right things! very proffessional in my opinion!

I think the Southend game was important because we came through with what was essentially a second team. If we want to compete over Christmas we can't afford to play our best team every game.

Against inferior opponents we need to rest some players and give some others a bit of match practice. I think Mido needed wednesday. Now if we bring him on as a sub at Toon he will be sharper.

IMHO Jol got it just right on Wednesday. We got through and we now have a better chance to get a few points in the difficult three games coming up.
