Jermain Defoe has indicated he is ready to sign a new deal at Tottenham as he says he is happy at White Hart Lane.

The England international came off the bench to score the winner in Sunday's 2-1 victory over Manchester City.

Defoe has been continually linked with a move away from Spurs as he has struggled to hold down a regular place in the starting XI.

The 25-year-old's future has been the subject of debate as he has still not signed a new contract.

However, Defoe says he has no plans to leave the club and is committed to the cause.

Happy

"I think if you look at any player in the world if you're playing, then you would sit down and think I would want to commit myself to the club," Defoe told Sky Sports News."A lot of people have said things about contracts and stuff, but if I am totally honest, if I did not want to be at this club, then I wouldn't be here - simple as that.

"I want to stay at the club. Like I keep saying the fans have been fantastic towards me".

"I love the fans and I love the club. I feel at home here and I said that when I signed.

"I definitely want to stay."

Speculation

Defoe admits he is prepared for more speculation regarding his future when the transfer window reopens next month
"I have had that [speculation] since I was young," added Defoe. "It is part and parcel of being a footballer

"Like I keep saying I am happy at the club. All my friends are here, I can see great potential and I love it.

"The fans are fantastic and I truly believe we can really do something special with this team so why would I want to move on?"

Surely in the time it took to give that interview he could have just signed the contract?

Less talk more action.

I think JD would agree with you? But as he only seems to get 15 minutes playing time a week, it's difficult for him to perform at his best.

This is taken from a post-match interview. What it doesn't say is that he was asked about Wendy's comment that there was no 'pecking order' amongst the forwards.

JD replied to the effect that "if that's what the manager said, then you have to believe him". In a way that suggested that he didn't believe him and that there was a 'pecking order'.

Yeah, I saw that comment. There obviously is a pecking order. Juande is being a bit stupid by saying otherwise.

Will be interesting to see if JD starts against Pompey.

Good to hear he is staying...I really like him....just needs to improve his offside ratio per game....

He's been too comfortable with his situation for too long. Hasn't developed....despite 'lack of game time'. Unlikely to suddenly develop an ability to bring others into a game, or to improve his off the ball activities(offsides, defensive).

No surprise, and in keeping with the insanity of our 'progress'(thankyou damien), our first signing in January will be a striker.....and JD will sign a one year extension.

I'd like to see him sign. I think he offers something different to our striking attack, and the opposition are certainly afraid of him. He won't be allowed a run of games to prove his worth though, he needs to take any opportunities he gets by the horns.

If JD signs a new contract I would be very suprised - he is going on a free for the big bucks, and I dont blame him.

Defoe is a vital piece in our attack, some say to have 4 stikers is a luxury, but if we want to do well in all competitions we need to have a strike force that can give us variety aswell as that competitive edge.

I'll be happy when Defoe signs.

I'll believe Defoe when he signs the contract. This is the same situation we had with Sol Campbell. He kept saying he wanted to stay but never signed the contract.
