He shows all the signs of a player that has already been 'tapped up'.

I do not have a problem with players seeing out their contracts if that's what they want to do. What I dislike is them coming out all coy and declaring their undying love for the club. If they intend to go at the end of their contract o.k. go. But at least have the balls to say so. The Club cannot sell Defoe or anyone else if the player is in contract and does not want to go. I am not saying Defoe is trying to do a Judas, I don't know. only time will tell. If he still has not signed in a couple of weeks then pack him off to the reserves to run down his contract. We have 3 decent strikers and the transfer window will be open for us to try and replace him. He can end it all by simply signing on the dotted line. The ball is well and truly in his court. Go if you want or stay but cut out all the long drawn out drama.

JD's contract is until 31 December 2009 - he signed for 4 1/2 years in April 2005, commencing on 1 July 2005. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/t/tottenham_hotspur/4498321.stm

That's silly - I'm sure the "1/2" year was April - June 05, and his contract actually expires 30 June (2009), like every other contract in every other summer-to-spring league in the world.

Incidentally, did anyone else notice that Defoe's goal wasn't a "great poacher's goal" or a "fantastic finish" or any of the other garbage that everyone's saying about it? As usual, he shot almost straight at the keeper and was fortunate to get a deflection that lifted it over Isaakson's legs. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he scored, and I'd be pleased with him extending his contract. But if this keeps up, I can't see any reason that he shouldn't be sold in January, or in the summer at the very latest. I hate to restart the great Defoe debate, but I'm certain that whatever 20-minute-a-week 4th striker we could get for Defoe's transfer fee would do more than go offside 5 times, shoot at the keeper 3 times, and score every 5th appearance or so when he came on.

JD has still done nothing wrong. Jol did not like him and treated him poorly. We are still in the honeymoon period with Ramos who in truth must still be assessing what we have. Honesty is necessary here. I fail to see how some supporters think JD has had 'chances'. Between the Tottenham and England set-ups he has been treated terribly for the last eighteen months. His time will come. I just pray that it is while he is with us.

Defoe has said afew times that he is happy at Tottenham as a club and with the fans, that is enough to be happy at the club yet still have problems beind the scene, ie hardly ettign any game time.

Maybe he doesnt want to leave, but wishes to stay at a club he likes, and all he wants is a chance to play  all the club has to do is tell him if he will get enough games/gametime/chances to make him want to stay, maybe its the club keeping Defoe waiting?

I see where you coming from Yid-ol, but with Keane and Berbatov (and possibly even Bent too) doing better than him, and him not justifying being picked abover them, then he has no case with which to push for guaranteed first-team football.

So he needs to decide whether being at a club he loves is more important, or whether being number one choice up front is.

I'm sorry, but that doesn't square with what he's saying. If he was so poorly treated, he wouldn't be stating that he's happy at the club.

Furthermore, the supposed ill-treatment by Martin Jol was all rumour, there was nothing conclusively proven. I'll concede that in the England setup he has been treated a little unfairly, in that there have been players that are patently less talented than him being chosen over him, but the same is not true at Spurs. Over the past three years or so, Keane has shown he is by far the better choice, especially considering his partnership with Berbs, which some quarters have described as 'almost telepathic'.

No player deserves automatic inclusion in a team unless he has shown his ability. And Keane has shown that he contributes more to Spurs teams than Defoe does. Keane has scored over 30 goals in about the same number of appaearances. Defoe's record isn't as impressive (I'm sure SS57 will have precise numbers).

That's not to say Defoe has no place at Spurs, but not as first-choice striker. Not on current form. If anything, this season some of his performances have indicated he's stronger as an impact sub than a starter.

He has looked good when ever he has come on, from what i have seen. Lively and is always looking towards the goals, although sometimes its not always the best thing in the last two matches he has been brought on we have looked more of a threat on goals than before.

Keane had a realy poor start to the season...it was some shocking games, but yet keeped his place over both Defoe and Bent. Bent hasn't lived up to people hopes (not the price tag because it was a stupid amount and shouldn't be compaired to what the club wanted to pay for him) yet and isn't clicking with the team yet.

Maybe not picked above, but defanatly a diffrent option we could have used at times and was over looked.

Can’t let you away with that. The whole team started slowly, Keane was one of the first to show promise and then all of a sudden...

Still had a poor start to the season, but i should have said Berbatov had an even worse start as well and the midfeild is only just starting to pick up.

No more than most and you picked on the negative and ran with it, ignoring his obvious positives, so I had to point it out :)

Well in the Premier League overall Keane has 173 appearances and 73 goals, Defoe has 131 appearances and 39 goals.

I don't think that means much though. I would like Defoe to stay, I don't think he's our best striker by any means, but I do think he has a place in the squad.

If he's not going to sign a contract though, I'd like us to sell him for as much as possible.

If it was I missed it

people saying Defoe hasnt impressed when he has come on as a sub, but has had a good few games where alot of people have praised him for the work he had done. Just pointing it out and when he could have come in and had his chance. That was the reason why i didn't origanly say Berbatov because it would have been Bent wh would have come in for him as the Keane/Defoe partnership isn't our best combo.
