Jermain Defoe won the praise of Martin Jol after notching up a half-century of Spurs goals to fire us to victory against Aston Villa.

The little hitman made it six goals in his last five games and 11 in his last 10 as we stretched our winning sequence at the Lane to 12 games in all competitions.

Dimitar Berbatov was the provided on both occasions as first 'JD' shot low across Gabor Kiraly in the Villa goal to open the scoring on 57 minutes before latching onto Berbatov's header and lashing past Kiraly for the second 20 minutes later. Gareth Barry made it 2-1 with nine minutes remaining but we held on.

Martin reflected: "Jermain was the difference, simple, although as a team I felt we deserved something out of this game because we created a bit more than them.

"If you have a striker like Jermain and a link-up player like Dimitar Berbatov you can only be a happy manager.

"Jermain will always be an unbelievable finisher but in his overall game - his combinations, on the ball, in his tactical approach for the team - he had to learn a bit and he's done that, so he's getting better and better.

"He's a great lad, always positive and an example for the other lads. Even when he's not playing, he always wants to do well. Robbie Keane is the same.

"We only had two attacking players against Villa and they knew they have to do it and there was responsibility on Jermain because normally if he's not scoring, I would put Robbie Keane on. I couldn't do that against Villa, Jermain knew that and he responded with two quality goals."

Never doubted him! If supplied correctly with Berbs, Lennon, Hudds, and Malbranque on the pitch, he will show his true "bang them in everytime" potential.

Got to say, I always thought Jermain was in it for himself. that he joined us with half an eye on moving straightaway down the road or to Man U. Always rated him as a player - but suspicious of him as a team man and his loyalty.

Over the last 6 months though I have come to the conclusion that I may have misjudged him. He is certainly single minded and determined and it is this side of his character that has got him out of the slump. But it is clear that he is learning to play for his team to develop his game.

All great sportsmen seem to explode onto the scene, suffer setbacks and then come back stronger and more dominant
. I think missing the world cup was Defoe's setback. The best is yet to come.
