Isn't he gonna cost over £30m?
We're so weird, last summer was same. Whole summer we feel like we're striving for value and deals and then randomly spunk £30m on a player.
He's not some bargain buy, is he seriously the best we could come up with? I know we've missed out on targets for whatever reason but our scouting is pathetic at times.

Disappointed when he went there for £2.5m or whatever it was.

With the prices of £40m ish being banded around for the likes of draxler. It's an absolute no brainer.

Iove being a breeding ground for English talent but there comes a point where I'd rather win things than be the springboard to a disappointing international career
If Draxler was available for £40 million, he would have been snatched up already. No question.

Toby couldn't get a game for Atletico. Scouting is done on the attributes fitting the buying club's requirements not the selling clubs.

Toby was often stuck at RB at Atletico because they had very good CBs like Godin. He'd already played for several seasons at Ajax and had come off an outstanding Premier League season at Southampton when we signed him.

Gray has never been regular first choice at PL level, and has been kept out of the Leicester team by the bang average Albrighton.

It is a fair point, but relies on Draxler (or whoever) being available, affordable, interested and our not getting gazumped.

Prices being comparable, I'd rather take the slightly older, experienced player... But Gray fits the young, British, promising template so I can see the appeal to the club.

18 goals and assists last season, that's pretty good in my eyes.
Let's not dress it up he has 13 goals and 13 assists across his whole league career (According to who scored) including playing in the Championship. Is he an exciting player to watch and does he get you out of your seat, yes. Does he have consistent end product that would warrant paying the 40-50m that palace would want, no.

Its bad hes actually not that good but I am so desperate for someone that can run at players I would probably pay the 30 million just for the option off the bench.

I think greys more direct and has more pace than n'koudou. Apart from playing in the same area of the pitch I don't see them as being that similar at all. Maybe the one thing they both struggle with is getting more involved in the game. Grey for me can go to a different level than N'koudou.

No idea where you are getting your stats from but he has 67 goals and assists in his league career according to this:

Sadly I think they're both just very ordinary and Gray would be an underwhelming addition.

It shouldn't come as a surprise surely? Has been rumbling on since June. If he's been on the list of possibles then time to pull the trigger (at last!). If they think he was right for Spurs back then, then he probably is now. Just looking at options and opportunities.

Would be underwhelmed with his signing - purely because he hasn't IMO shown enough in PL or in Championship. He looks good on ball, but there is no one core strength that shines out.

You are simply reinforcing my point.

The genius part was identifying him while languishing in La Liga. Spurs swooping in with a better offer was simply opportunistic and dumb on the part of the EPL clubs who ignored the opportunity.

The buying club requirements set the parameters for scouting.

I don't know if Gray's the right choice for us. I'm not a scout but your argument is flawed in that Albrighton keeps him out of the team.

Harry Kane had a number of failed loan moves. Didn't stop the coaching staff promoting him into the match day squad.

Personally I rate him think he's got great potential and can beat a man he's only 21. I like him.

Just have a look at transfermarkt, this fella plays as a CF in England U21 Euro, either on his own or pairing with abraham

Sorry not for me, not sure he is better than andros Townsend let alone any of our current squad

It is not flawed to say that Albrighton keeps Gray out of the Leicester team. It's a fact.

The signing of Toby wasn't a pure scouting decision. I have no doubt that Verts would have been in Poch's ear constantly about how good his former Ajax CB partner was, and how well their games complemented each other. Southampton thought they could buy Toby after the season loan to the PL, and we hijacked the deal because we had the inside track.

Toby has made Verts a more effective player and vice versa. Their understanding on the pitch, crucial for a CB partnership, is exceptional.

There is no analogy to be drawn between the signing of Toby for around £11 million to play alongside his Ajax and Belgium colleage Verts, and the prospective signing of Gray for a ridiculous £30 million plus.
