Last minute transfer to redcafe I've been told.

I'm here and not at Man U forum for your surprise  Have you any questions?

I'm a little bit surprised that Man U paid over £30m but I expected that they will sign him. The main thing was that Levy stopped Berba last summer and was well aware that it would be counterproductive for the team to stop him twice. Similarly, Ronaldo will leave Man U next summer, no matter what Ferguson says now.

Financially, the deal is superb. The question is whether it would have been better to take few millions less some weeks ago and sign better replacements.

The big problem was that when Levy sold Keane he thought Arshavin was in the bag. Big mistake IMO.

Will miss him though, BO said it best
I may miss the player
I won't miss the man

We could never replace Berbatov like or like. Keane was another it was going to be hard to replace, Arshaven is probably the closest you could come to a replacment though.

Im sure we will see a lot of unhappy fans judging our strikers upon Keane and berbatov for a long time though :(

Great player, pretty shit attitude towards the end. Maybe he should look at how Corluka performed for Man City when he was dragged back to them after our transfer. Berbatov could learn a thing or two from him. Hopefully he fails miserably there but somehow I doubt it.

Just a little joke.

Trying to lighten my mood but its not working to be honest.

What I can't understand is this. Everyone knew Berba was a goner. Levy simply used time to extract more money from United. To me it doesn't matter if Berba was sold two weeks ago or last night, he was gone either way. Why then was a suitable replacement not bought in? If Pavlyuchenko is the replacement then a replacement for Keane instead.

The big problem was that when Levy sold Keane he thought Arshavin was in the bag. Big mistake IMO.

I agree with this. No doubt Zenit moved the goalposts conditions wise but until a deal is signed and sealed it can never be considered done and dusted. You only have to read the posts in the ITK read only section to see this. Btw that is not a dig at the ITKs.

If there is one thing I have learned of Levy it is that he wants our club to be financially secure. Levy does not want this club to be in any debt whatsoever, even for two weeks. He wanted to make absolutely sure that we had the berbatov money before we threw our money out at someone else and by the time we had the money for berbatov there was no time to get anyone else.

Levy said he wanted £30m - he got £30m - plus a good young prospect chucked in for free as a year long sweetener

game set & match to Levy

yes he should have got Pav in earlier - but re Berbs he spoke, he wrote, he conquered

Chris your avatar? What the fuck!?

Forgot I still had that!

Was getting angry at people calling Keane the "Green Judas" or whatever, despite conducting himself brilliantly and going to a better club for good money and footballing reasons...

Just my way of taking the piss

FYI posters, after Mick Dennis said on Sky that MU should still be investigated by the PL for holding talks with Berbatov without permission, MU have sent SSN a statement saying that Levy gave verbal permission when there was only one bid on the table.

So, it true, we can assume the Citeh bid was made late in the day and didn't affect anything, as apparently Berba has said today in Sofia that he got a call about Citeh's offer of personal terms when already in Fergie's car, and he refused it outright saying he didn't care about the money.

The hyprocrisy of the British Press continues even after the transfer deadline is over.

Levy can't do right for doing wrong. Today Mick Dennis says he caved in and was paid "hush money" and given a player at 11.40pm to drop the charges.
How much support did Levy get from the press throughout this whole saga? NONE!
They wrote daily articles calling him a hypocrite, different, penny pinching, etc etc and generally thought the complaint totally invalid.
After a pile of evidence was submitted, the PL Committee asked for more.
Does anyone seriously believe that they would take action against MU and deduct points?

Levy was acting on behalf of THFC, he's a pragmatist, and he was doing his best for our club in difficult circumstances. Right or wrong, agree or disagree with his actions, he'll never have a friend in the press, so Mick Dennis's belated bleatings this morning mean nothing.

Berbatov Speaks today...

I realise the vast majority on SC aren't interested, but for the record, and those 3 other folk who are.

As reported in the Sofia Echo on today's press conference:

“I reached one great dream and I want to reach the others I’ve set myself as well,” Manchester United Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov told journalists in Sofia on August 2, only hours after his move from Tottenham to Man Utd had been announced.
Manchester United caved in to Tottenham Hotspur's demands and paid £30.75 million (38 million euro) to finally land Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov minutes before the transfer window slammed shut on midnight on September 1 2008.
Berbatov had become the subject of a tug-of-war between three clubs in the final hours of the transfer deadline day, with Manchester City, who put in a British transfer record bid of £34 million (42 million euro) and Spanish Real Madrid reportedly preparing a bid of their own for the Bulgarian, according to reports in Spain, but the bid never came.
“I respect City’s opinion and that they made such a stunning offer, which arrived in the last moment. Thus, things went to a dead-end for three-four hours. It was a very hard period, but I hadn’t said my word. “Those who know me, know that I had only one goal, and that was to put on Manchester United’s shirt. Money was never on the first place for me. I could live as well with one million as with 10 million. I reached a team, which is the best in the world in my opinion,” Berbatov said as quoted by Focus news agency.
Berbatov said that he realised how much United expected from his move. “When you see the pictures of all the legendary footballers, it makes it clear where you are and what they expect from you. […] Our goals are to win the Champions League and the title [Premiership].”
“Now I only think about the [Bulgarian] national team. As for the mood in the past two hours, it varied from euphoria to despair. In the end everything ended up well,” he said.
I need to concentrate […] It is difficult. I see that a lot of people are in euphoria, imagine what my condition is. But I am the leader of the national team and I have to set an example,” Berbatov said, who is in Bulgaria for the next World Cup qualifier against Montenegro on September 6.
“I will never say a bad word about Tottenham because they showed me the way. Tottenham gave me a hand and allowed me to show what I’m capable of.”
The transfer was completed “20-25 minutes before the closure of the transfer window,” Berbatov’s agent Emil Danchev said.
Danchev revealed the outcome of the transfer saga to the journalists. “A night earlier the transfer was on the brink of ruin. There were new negotiations. […] We had one last meeting with Mr. Levy [Tottenham’s chairman Daniel Levy] in the morning. At 4-5am we left for central London. We received permission to leave for Manchester and start negotiations. Sir Alex [Manchester United’s manager Alex Ferguson] met us at the airport. While we were travelling with him, a [Manchester] City representative called and asked me for a meeting. There was even a financial offer. I told him that he was calling too late and there was no possibility to launch negotiations. The negotiations with United’s management took six-seven hours. […] The tension was really immense. I told Mitko [Berbatov] about City’s offer but I told him that the team was the same class as Tottenham and there was no point in joining them.”
However, City’s offer played its role. “That was the key moment because it is normal that an owner starts thinking when they receive a better offer,” Danchev said.

I found that bloke's comments - you know the one. Floppy hair. Massive nose. used to flounce around plucking balls out of the air will his little toe and set up Keano now and then, when he wasn't holding his hands inside his sleeves, anyway - insightful.

He talked about the importance of 'big games'. And when you think about it, when the test was toughest that's when he did his best work for us. The cup games, UEFA matches, even being down to 10 men against Bolton is tough.

Seeing as United will have no shortage of 'big games' I have a feeling he's going to do rather well there. :-(
