We need to get up to that level, I dont see how we will achieve that status but if we want to be able to attract and keep the level of players we would like then we need champions league football and to be involved in 'big games' week in week out.

The only way to attract that calibre of player on long term contracts that they will stick to is to get Champions League. The only way any club other than one with a big name and an even bigger cheque book will ever do that is to accidentally stumble across a squad of comparitively average/affordable talent that happens to make up the ingredients of "lucky soup", coinciding with one of the top teams stalling badly.

Until one club manages that (which we nearly did, save for the lasagne-gate scandal), the big 4 clubs will continue to treat every other club as their feeder and will be able to do that.

I still have this romantic vision of a Ginola type player joining us - so much more talented than the squad around them yet stays for the love of the club, not going off chasing glory with a team already up there. You do that and get silver, what have you achieved? Nothing, you've just tagged onto a successful clubs coat-tail and reaped the benefits.

That's not achieving anything at all and players, like Dimi, who say they want to be earning trophies are just wasting their talent in front of, and amongst, players and fans that expect you to perform. A player who is liked at Man U would be adored at somewhere like Everton or Villa and isn't it more attractive to be part of the reason your club succeeds rather than just another anonymous cog in a giant mechanical trophy machine?

Guess i'm just living in the past though...

I'm afraid so. You're also looking at it from a very narrow angle in the great scheme of things.

His transfer has made such big news in his home country, it is the main headline NEWS, not just sports news. My friend says the country is practically hysterical over it. As far as they're concerned he is now where he belongs, not at some club they can't pronounce the name of that wins cups every 9 years. It hurts us, but this is how things are viewed.

And no, DavidMatzdorff, he is not suffering from depression. He was clearly just feeling he was languishing with us for the past year, save, as Bill_Oddie says, for those big UEFA nights and Cup games, one of his most outstanding being our quarter-final win up at Citeh with 10 men, which set us on the road to winning......our only trophy in 9 years.
But Bill, don't be like that. Why do you want him to fail? No, don't answer, I know why. But he hasn't stopped smiling and laughing, and been close to tears with emotion, the swagger is back, he's obviously ecstatic to have gone there, so I can't begrudge him, even if 99% of this board does, which disappoints me, as when did he ever pledge his future to us as Keane did? Never, that's when, not once since coming here 2 years ago, he was always imminently off, and never denied it. He said in the confines of the Lodge last April that living in London wasn't important to him, he could live anywhere, the Football was the most important thing, and I took that to mean he was off. I'm just wondering how either DA's interpretation, or the club's message throughout the Summer, and when the transfer window first opened, that there was even the remotest possibility he would stay and accept it came about? That was never on the cards - ever. From his comments, it's obvious Chelski tapped him up aswell, and he turned them down, so those Summer rumours had some validity, had he been interested, which I knew he wouldn't be.
I personally think DA's opinion of him being comfortable as a big fish in a little pond is also wrong. That is true of his life in Bulgaria, where the journos actually applauded at the start of his press conference, like he'd won a gold medal and brought it home. Eek But come the football he will probably be in his element and rise to the occasion. And I'll be happy for him, as long as he doesn't score against us. I won't go on about the happenings in Bulgaria, and I can already see people's eyes glazing over, but the transformation in him as a morose git to a kid at Christmas is quite spectacular. No way could he have stayed at Spurs, even until January, it just wouldn't have worked, so in that sense, I'm glad he's left and got his move, as we definitely wouldn't have got the best out of him, PT was totally right on that score.

For the record, I'll leave you with his comments about Spurs, for those who have missed the TV footage on SSN:

You may think what he's saying is disingenuous, but that's him. He was tired and emotional, and I believe meant it. I also think we misjudged his relationship with Danchev, they are more friends or father/son than player/agent, and anyone who believes that he is Berba's "puppet master" as I've read here, is barking up the wrong tree.

It's probably a good thing there's an international break for all concerned.

'Tired and emotional'? That's Private Eye's time-honoured euphemism for being rat-arsed.

Funnily, one of the first ITK tit-bits we had in the wake of Ramosgate, almost certainly leaked by that **** Kemsley in an attempt to diminish Jol, was that Martin wanted to flog Berbatov and sign Crouch. In retrospect (assuming this was true), perhaps this wasn't a bad idea.

Overrated twat. Good riddance.

Well Lily I guess we should hope that the people of Wales or Croatia don't feel the same way about Bale/Modric because I wouldn't want to read more threads from you supporting them moving to a bigger club in the same fashion. I'll be honest with you Lily in that sometimes I've wondered if you're a Spurs fan or a Berbatov fan first?

This Man Utd dream of his is bullshit. He turned them down once already to join us lets not forget that and that actions speak louder than words. He's gone there for trophies taking the easy route instead of sticking around and making it happen here. Initially I think he preferred moving to London over Manchester so chose us but now instant trophies are his motivation. If he had gone to Real Madrid or Barcelona instead of MU it would be the same generic 'my dream' bullshit we'd be reading today.

*yawn* Why? Because I haven't called him a **** like everyone else. And how does accepting he's moved, and wishing him well rather than hoping he breaks a leg make me not a Spurs fan?

No, don't answer. I couldn't care less what your opinion is frankly.

The reality is that the people of Wales and Croatia probably do feel the same way, but do continue thinking otherwise if it makes you feel better.

ETA: Oh, and KY, just put me on ignore, and then you won't have to read my posts or "wonder" anymore. Likewise SS57, that'll be one less poster you have to sneer at.

Ooh well there's a bitter post! Why would I want to put you on ignore? I actually enjoy reading your opinions on just about every other topic except Berbatov as they're so blinkered...

I think just like every other Spurs fan we have accepted that he's moved, what we don't like is the fashion in which he set about doing it. There's a big difference in the two but until you take off the rose tinted goggles you won't be able to see it.

If you feel that you're opinion is right and that 99% of Tottenham fans are wrong then perhaps you're supporting the wrong club?

I dare to say that Lily knows more about Berbatov than every non-Bulgarian Spurs fan. Her opinions have been far from blinkered. Rather they were well based in reality.

It's absolutely false that Berbatov turned down Man U 2006. They just came a little bit late.

I can understand why people are so disappointed by him and wish him to break his legs etc. Part of the reason is that they firmly refuse (or just are unable) to see how things stand from his perspective. He gave two years from his career to Spurs, scored 46 goals, made over 30 assists and brought profit for £20m. And the overall profit was maybe way bigger as he sold many shirts, heavily contributed to wininning UEFA Cup spots in the Prem and for the successful cup campaigns over those two years. Would it be better for Spurs if Man U have succeed to sign him already 2006? I would like to know the arguments of those who think that it would be better if Spurs missed on him 2006, i.e. that the negatives from his Spurs career overweight the positives.

Spurs bosses could have made his departure less painful for fans by openly declaring already after the end of the season that they don't want players at the club who are not committed. Unfortunately, this wouldn't make sense financially wise as Levy wouldn't be able to sell him for £30m. If Levy hade made auction he could possibly get £25m as Barca and Milan and Man U wouldn't go higher. But he would avoid that saga and its negative consequences, including lack of genuine replacement for Keane. Fans were happy that Levy played hard ball but weren't happy from the result. Who is to be blamed then? Berbatov? Because at 27 he has won only one cup in his career (in Germany and England) and wants to play at the highest level and win some titles eventually?

My only 2 problems with Berbatov are :

1) His obvious use of us as a shop window, or stepping stone, from day 1.

2) His utter lack of respect for the club and his complete unprofessionalism in the last few weeks at least.

I can't wait till Rooney misplaces a pass to DB. If DB gives him 'that' look, or stamps his feet, Rooney will probably lump him in the dressing room. If he doesn't give 'that' look, it proves he was utterly disrespectful to our club and its players, every week.

Yes, I'm a little bitter but in the grand scheme of things I'm glad he's gone.

Berbatov truly believes he has nothing to apologise for. If he had turned up to our first 3 games of the season and gave his all in those games and then left for Man Utd stating his wish to play once again in the CL and win major trophies then as upset as I would be about losing a quality player I could have accepted it easier.

The problem is Berbatov didn't fucking turn up to the start of our league season and clearly showed that all he cared about was getting what he wanted and would stop at nothing to achieve that aim.

That shows a complete lack of respect to the club, his fellow players and most importantly us the fans. One thing is for sure Whiskey Face won't accept Berbatov's lack of professionalism at Utd and I wonder how he will react when he finds himself on the bench for a run of games. Prehaps he should look at true professional like Vedran Corluka and James Milner who both played there very best for clubs that they knew they would soon be leaving.

Unfortunately I suspect Berbatov's head is so far up his own arse he can't see that what he has done might have upset the fans of the club that gave him the chance to shine on one of the most watched stages in all of football.

Am I bitter he has left? No not in the slightest because he didn't want to play for the club I love so good riddance as far as I am concerned.
