Middlesbrough remain determined to extract the maximum possible value for Djed Spence as discussions with Tottenham over the wing-back reach a critical phase. Boro’s recruitment team are adamant they will not accept less than £20m for Spence, and are pushing for as much of the fee as possible to be paid in an up-front payment and not be dependent on add-on clauses being met. Spurs are understood to be proposing an initial fee of around £15m, which does not meet Boro’s requirements.

The content of the piece does not match the headline. Nowhere in there says the deal is near completion.

I read today the deal is on a 1 million difference. 15/14 respectively .

By all accounts he’s coming to Spurs it just the value.

It's the talks that are near complete. Then he signs or presumably we walk away.

It's probably nearly done, but Boro are in quite a strong position. They know Conte wants Spence in for pre season and they have Isiah Jones as their starting RWB, so don't need Spence. They also know we have money. Spence can't really exert any pressure since they don't need him. I think we either bite the bullet and pay a bit over the odds or else this drags on and on. They do want funds for their own incomings though.
