Do Spurs need to upgrade on Hugo Lloris?

I don't get all the negative comments for the OP.

There seems nothing wrong with asking it - the answer may be 'no'.

There have been a few times HL has looked a little suspect this season, more often than previous years.

As others have suggested, it could be more to do with other things than HL himself, but I don't see the problem in posting this.

94 international caps for one of the best national sides, and their captain too. What would make him world class?

Distribution which puts our defence under pressure a lot more than it should or saving one of the goals yesterday.

He has to have instructions to do so though. He's been living dangerously by doing that for so long now there's no way he hasn't been told to. The first goal he just simply has to pick a side in advance and he ended up choosing the wrong one. The second one we've seen before, him diving at the feet and being lobbed. Was it Sanchez at the Emirates that was similar?

I thought his reactions were not great for either goal including picking the wrong side when Sanchez obviously had cut down Salah's space to shoot on Loris' right. The second one wasn't really his fault but poor defending from Verts, Davies and others. He saves a lot more then he lets in you know.

I am not talking about passing out from the back. That is an instruction and one I agree with but his passing is pretty poor and puts our defenders under pressure. I don't think we could do any better but I don't think he is irreplaceable like Kane.

For Salah’s second goal. I immediately thought Lloris should have left it for a goal kick, but instead he gave away a throw-in in a dangerous position, which led to the goal.

Said the same thing when it happened.

Making less mistakes for one.
It always seems to be in the big matches when he does it too, which to me is a question mark against his mentality

Purely on performances, I'd love us to find an upgrade. In fact, I wouldn't mind a slightly less 'peaky' keeper - Hugo's capable of the absolutely magnificent and the downright dodgy all in the space of 5 minutes, and I think having someone who's going to be consistently good enough, but who doesn't consistently kick it straight over the full-back's head or play them into a world of trouble, and doesn't get beaten at his near post quite as often, would bring more to our game than the occasional worldie.

I appreciate that kind of thing somewhat comes with the territory and there are probably less than 5 keepers in the world who combine absolute rock solid keeping with decent passing - and clearly we aren't going to get De Gea or Neuer or the like.

If Hugo decided he wanted out (for big money) I wouldn't be devastated.

Hypothetical: Jan Oblak?

Weird thread.

Lloris is one of the very best in the world.

Comments about weird footwork clearly don’t understand goalkeeping, his footwork is second to none and it’s the reason why he gets himself into great saving positions, because of quick feet (unless they are talking about his passing technique - again a bit of a myth).

I love this thread.
The stick Heurelho Gomes got with the shitty defence we had yet made less mistakes than Hugo only reason he was slagged off so much was the mistakes looked worse and we had a manager who highlighted any mistake he made Arry the absolute cock.

So yes we can do much better than Hugo in goal.
Most overrated player in a spurs shirt.

There is a case to be made here. He has a few very positive attributes, including shot stopping (especially close range), reactions and positioning. However, this year he has let in a few goals on close range shots which he would normally save, including near post. On the con side, his distribution lets him down every game, and just puts more pressure on defence. All the opponents know this by now. He does seem to have a big game phobia.

Hi Guys,

Hugo Lloris used to be part of the elite tier of 'keepers in the Premier League. However, his form has dropped off this season and we've taken a look behind the stats.

"Now, a lot of factors should be taken into account: Alderweireld’s absence is a big blow; Spurs have been without Victor Wanyama; and Davinson Sánchez is still adapting to the rigours of the English top flight.

However, as previously mentioned, Tottenham aren’t poor defensively. Their xGA90 is still just 0.83, so they aren’t conceding many high-quality chances, despite having a number of key players missing. The difference between this season and previous ones is Lloris is conceding ‘softer’ goals."

Time to move on from Lloris?

Cheers,

Sam

I think it's time we brought in a real challenger someone young and hungry who will be given a chance if they deserve it

It seems to be getting increasingly difficult to find a thread where there is balance on SC. Lloris has been a great GK for us and for some time was our only genuinely world class player. He has dropped off a little this season and if it continues that would be worrying. However, the much bigger issue is his distribution. Given that our coach seems set on playing out from the back we might be served better as a team by having a slightly less good shot stopper than Loris but who has far better distribution.

Responding by saying "name an upgrade" is as ridiculous as saying "are you an international football scout". The fact is that if our scouts could find a GK who had Ederson's level of distribution while being not as good a shot stopper as Lloris then I'd suggest we'd be better off results wise by making that switch.

I genuinely think some people do not actually watch football, or know what they're looking at if they do.

Gomes was better than Lloris? Jesus fucking christ.

He definitely seems to be in a habit of going to ground early in 1 on 1 situations. Has done it numerous times this season. Even the 1st goal dives to the right and makes Salah mind up for him. No reason he couldn’t have stood up as Salah approached. Whether we could upgrade is debatable. But for me Harry should now be club captain for obvious reasons. I’m sure Hugo would understand that decision.
