Do we need Dier now?

Functional is fine when you are paper thin in those areas. I agree.

We are no longer paper thin.

He is a bang average Cm and RB. A decent CB.

Is that what we need for those 60m sheets? We need more than functional at those prices

That's right we are not, but would be if Dier went and who would cover the 3 centre backs and Wanyama ?

Dier is an England international he is above average. He is a solid professional and performs to a high standard in any position he is told to play. I really don't get why you feel he needs to be moved on.

We really need to build around solid players like Dier Kane etc imo he is one of the most vital players we have in the squad .

I guess you also don't like or rate Alli, another player I'm hearing our supporters coming out with such remarks about how useless he is when not scoring.

CBs we play 2 at the back well enough, wanyama I agree, we would need another player there.

Dier is not without his value, my point is and always has been, is there more value out there for 60m? Could we get cover for example up top AND in CM for that price?

We've worked magic this window already. Aurier plus 25m for Walker could be the trade of the season.

If we got 80-90m for Janssen Wimmer and Dier I think we would be having someones eyes out and its a big chance to improve the cover in more positions than just Diers.

See Chelsea game, didn't have the best of games personally but when he was taken off the whole team suffered, of course we need him...

not sure I agree with that, think the bigger issue was a clearly unfit Wanyama stayed on

But Dier's a pillar of the squad and stability is more important than change

See above about international football. Its not relevant any more!!! Jake Livermore is an international footballer!!! Sissoko has 51 caps!!!

The champions league is the benchmark in football. International football is not even close.

People still getting me wrong about Dier. A week ago, he was indispensible. we just considerable upgraded in 2 positions, which completely changes perspective. Its no good looking at last season, we already have a notably different squad at the back.

What planet are people on?

Dier starts every game... He gives flexibility to change formation without a sub. He gives flexibility to change formation from one minute to the next. He doesn't have one position in the side. He fulfils at least two positions during the same match.

I don't think we "need" Dier in the same way that we "need" a pacey forward.

If United said they would be willing to let Martial go if we were willing to part with Dier, then that is something we must consider.

Especially if Barkley eventually comes in to rotate with Dembele & Wanyama in the middle. Then Sanchez/Jan/Toby can handle the back with Davies as LCB/Wimmer/Foyth/ to help out as cover too.

Love Dier and his versatility and I don't want him to go but if it meant bringing in a quality forward with pace, then I'm all for it.

And if Sanchez doesn't hit the ground running?

He's clearly someone Poch wants to keep, so he stays for me. He was also missed when he went off last Sun.

Next season though it maybe different, depending on how Sanchez & Foyth (assuming he signs) do.

For us to be successful - across all competitions - we need 14-15 players capable of being in the starting XI for a contending team.

Dier is one of those players. He also provides much of the steel to our spine.

I think he has made a mistake pushing for a role in CM, because I prefer the way Wanyama plays the position. But, Dier can also play the role effectively (albeit not in partnership with Wanyama) - and the competition and ability to rotate will make the entire squad stronger. Not to mention his tactical flexibility - able to slot into a number of positions when we need it.
I'd argue that we need at least 18 really quality players to have a chance at being successful in all competitions. Which makes people wanting to flog Dier even more ludicrous.

And behind the scenes he's an extremely important dressing room character as well, Dele's best mate and gives the appearance of a being a key figure in training and on matchdays. He gives 100% every match to the point where his passion can almost be a hindrance (see in particular Chelsea at the Bridge), but we lacked a player with that kind of passion for years and years and I'm certainly not giving him up.

Lastly, he's still only 23. He could play a decade more for us and can still improve a lot.

With him on we were losing 1-0, we took him off and equalised. Wanyama had a stinker, but was clearly not up to match speed, what we needed was to move the ball with a bit of tempo and wit, and Dier just does not do this. He was part of the problem against Chelsea, not the solution.

I'd keep him but he is miles behind Wanyama in his ability to play the "destroyer" role. His long term future needs to be at CB.

Our best squad in my lifetime, probably most of our lifetimes, and people are still trying to break it up and play Football Manager. Don't sell any of the key players, leave the thing alone and add some more quality for depth. Competition for places is healthy, especially if we want to compete on multiple levels and progress as a football club.

I agree with your sentiment, but I think you need more than 14-15. More like 18/19.

Hence my point.

We now have excessive cover at RB, and cB.

Could we use that 60m better?

For my money these make the grade for serious title contending

Lloris

Aurier. Trippier
Rose. Davies

Toby. jan. Sanches.

Dier

Wanyama

Dembele

Alli. Ericson Son

Kane

Winks is close, Lamella who knows.

The others, Sissoko. Janssen, wimmer are no where near the level.

That is maybe 15, and its heavily tilted defensively. Looks like we are getting. 1-2 more, but if you got some decent dough in, that number could easily reach 17- 18.
Why do you, and a lot of others Ive seen, just assume that Sanchez will be ahead of Dier for that RCB role. Sanchez is just 21 and has only done the business for 1 season in Europe and that was in a poor Eredivisie. Dier has performed at a high standard in the PL for 3 season now. Until Sanchez actually proves otherwise at Spurs, for me it's still Dier >>> Sanchez.

Dier is a fantastic player to have in our squad. He might struggle now to get a regular start (though I think he will) but in terms of strength of our squad he is invaluable.

I also find it funny that some fans are outraged when a player hints that he might want to leave (i.e. Rose), but are quite happy to sell players who have shown loyalty and want to be at the club like Dier.

Disagree with the OP, bur certainly if I was Dier, I'd be worried where exactly I fitted in this season.
Then again, it was not clear where he would play last season, and in the end, there couldn't have been many players who started more games than him. It was our best season for generations, and Dier played his part.
