Do we need Dier now?

Looking at Wanyama's performance against Chelsea I can see no reason to either want or need to let Dier go at the moment. Granted he didn't have a particularly good game either that day but I just feel we would perhaps regret letting him go later in the season when suspensions/injuries inevitably happen. Then again, as you quite rightly say, if an offer comes in and it's 'silly' money you would have to consider it. I like the lad, nothing fancy but usually tries to put a shift in.

No way Poch is letting Dier go anywhere. He clearly trusts him, he is also a leader on the pitch and when we need to physically impose ourselves on a game he will always step up. He might not be an automatic starter soon but still a valuable squad player who will play plenty of games.

Let me put it this way: Alex Ferguson would have taken Dier at any of man utd squads. Every title winning team has a dier in it. He is our ivanovic, our Carrick, our mascherano. He will only look stellar on occasion, but he will never look out of depth in any competition, or against any opposition.

Controversial maybe but if Sanchez performs really well then that renders Dier nothing more than a squad player for me. I think he's either a CB or a DM at the base of a three. In a two man midfield he's often pretty average imo and he doesn't possess the agility required. Wanyama is a better option in midfield.

His main strength is his versatility but I just think combinations of Dier/Dembele and particularly Dier/Wanyama can look pretty turgid.

Dier's biggest problem is that he's no longer the best player available in any of the positions he wants to play in.

Wanyama has usurped him from his preferred DM role, and he isn't a water-carrier like Winks or Dembele as he possesses a very limited passing range and almost never travels with the ball. He also doesn't seem to be reading defensive situations as well as he used to. It's one of the reasons why the Dier-Wanyama pivot is so horrific and slows our play so much. There isn't an actual footballer in the centre of the pitch. Dembele works better with either of them as he moves so much more and allows both to play their more natural deeper role and is always there to receive the ball from them. I'd like to see Dier play the Dembele role more when paired with Wanyama and move forwards, vacate the DM space and try and work the ball up the pitch, but it seems to be against his natural instincts.

He's always been a bit dodgy at CB, and you'd have to assume that Sanchez, if he turns out to be even half as good as we're led to believe, will take the third CB slot.

He's actually a very decent RB I think, especially in a flat back four, and possesses an absolutely fantastic crossing ability, but it's highly unlikely we'll ever see him there again except in truly dire (boom-boom) circumstances.

He's still a very useful squad player as he's so versatile, has a good attitude and looks to me like he's starting to develop some leadership qualities. I also like him because he's quite obviously a top bloke and is probably great to have around the team. But I do agree that the rumoured £60m from United is looking like a pretty massive overpricing of a useful but quite limited footballer. Next summer we might have to consider it if Jose comes back.

Poch trusts him though so it matters little what we or I think, and that's fine by me, I trust Poch's opinions more than my prattling.

C'mon people, grow up. The poster has put forward a view and has backed that up with his reasons. Ok maybe we don't all agree with him but this is called discussion and what forums are all about. Comments like, "this thread is shit" and "I'm outa here" are just immature and dumb. I enjoyed the post/thread & I liked the counter arguments put forward also. If you can't contribute something semi-intelligent, just leave the thread.

WALOB this thread is. Integral part of our team, flexible member of the squad, someone who clearly has a winning mentality.

I think we will see dier focus on DM role this season and end up as first choice over wanyama, in the process pushing himself to new heights.

Don't forget dm is mourhinhos favourite position and dier was his first choice signing. Southgate also rated him in this position as does poch.

Poch also loves him, I suspect as much for his character and the steel he adds as his ability. He has always found a way to get him on the pitch even if it meant changing formations.

My guess is they have had a heart to heart and with England on his mind dier has said he wants to focus on midfield so poch has bought a new centre back and will challenge him to be better than wanyama.

Looking at it from diers perspective he could have been going into this season as starting dm for man utd and England, all he needed to do was hand in a transfer request, but he chose to stay at spurs. Do you really think he chose to stay as a utility squad player?

Not to mention his age also! He will only continue to get better

Seems to be a mentality that if they are not a guaranteed starter then shall we sell, then when we get injuries people moan that we don't have the depth!!
The guy is a born winner and that can be worth 10 times ability on occasions!
That's why he is probably one of the first names on our team sheet in poch's eyes.

Agree with this, the op has taken a bit of OTT unecessary flak.

Sorry mate but this is an idiotic discussion.

Only spurs fans could be so ridiculous as to want to have a debate about whether we keep an England international under the age of 24 who is world class.

Quite embarrassing really.

I'm not a massive Dier fan, but Ive been very balanced on my opinion on apparent interest in him from Man Utd.

He has done a decent job for us, and his adaptability was invaluable in a thin squad. Hence he always makes a lot of appearances.

But, he doesn't feel me with confidence in possession like the rest of the team. He isnt incredibly mobile. And when him and Wanyama play next to each other he doesn't seem to know what his job is.

Hypothetically, If we had to sell 2 of our top 13-14 players from last season, Walker and Dier would have been pretty much on top of the list for a lot of people I feel, especially at the sums being quoted.

As it is, we just made two great signings, leaving most of Dier's adaptability redundant.

We got an incredibly good player at RB for half what we sold Walker for.

We got a seemingly excellent young centre half.

It would appear that Diers role for us now, is even more that of a 2nd tier sqaud player.

With this in mind if we could get 60m now, to use elsewhere, would you take it?

I would in a heartbeat.
I would still keep him as a squad player to cover any eventualities but I am in agreement that he no longer should be considered first choice for any position

Just as embarrassing as a Spurs supporter considering him world class
