Funny, I actually thought all the praise he's been getting has been more knee-jerky than anything. People been saying he's been playing out of his skin this season - whilst he was excellent at CB against Madrid, he's been fairly average otherwise. I think the lack of Wanyama is making him look good - just as the presence of Wanyama made him look bad last season, because Wanyama does everything so much better than Dier.

He can play CD ( his best position in my view ), CM ( no longer our best option there ) and even RB. So why would we want to sell him ?

Poch is hundred percent correct about Eric, he's a center half not a defensive midfielder. No surprise his best game in the past two years was him playing at centerback against madrid. Only now he's not even the best young centerhalf at the club with Sanchez here. I'm not saying Dier has a bad attitude or anything, but I get the impression that he's a bit stubborn, where in reality he needs to get back to basics and listen to Poch.

selling him would be silly, it should be clear to anybody that Eric has the potential to be a top class CB and in a pinch his ability to fill in at DM is useful, but he needs to get back to focusing and thinking like a defender.

Because 60m for anyone that doesnt get a shit load of assists and goals, is still astronmical. He plays two of those positions to a mediocre level at best, so the whole point at the start was, is 60m too much to turn down for a utility player?

hind sight is wonderful. Sanchez is great but Wanyama has only played one game. Could we have spent some of that 60 on a much handier midfielder given Dembeles problems?

I personally feel that everytime we play with dier in the middle we are paceless in possession and don’t dominate little battles that dembele and wanyama eat up all day, and he is a big geezer. 2nd goal tonight was a prime example. Should have won a tackle, next best scenario, just take the player out 40 yards from goal.

Dier seriously needs to be able to recognise his limitations, accept them and play to his strengths which can still make him a great defender.

is this knee jerky? I started the OP 3 months ago. He did a dcent job first season vastly eclipsed by Wanyama. He did a decent job 2nd season except for when he played in midfield with Wanyama which culminated in 1 win in 7 (october 16)

We lacked pace at the back though, and Sanchez is looking great.

But yeah, knee jerk, well done

When/if Wanyama comes back this season, I struggle to see where Dier gets into this team with Sanchez playing so well, too. Let's just all pray Poch doesn't see Dier and Wanyama as an option.

Will be interesting to see what Poch does with him once everyone's fit. Can't see him dropping Sanchez for him and Winks is nailing down a CM role. Wanyama surely sits above him in the pecking order.

Looking forward to see Winks in his current form together with Wanyama.

If anything, Dier has shot himself in the foot by asking to play CM as it meant Poch went and bought Sanchez.

Wanyama was week in week out fantastic last year.

Those tight games that we seem to be drawing again at home like we did in years gone by, we were winning them with the two beasts dominating the game in the middle.

Credit where its due, we’ve done very well to get by without him and Dembele the way we have but we’ve had 3 shockers now at “home” that I dont think would be the case if they were fit.

The 'cruel' fact is, and maybe disappointment to some, with not everyone fit, Dier is/has been our options. Note the plurality.
