It's a squad game these days so to say someone should be moved on because they might not be in a hypothetical starting XI is just daft and short-sighted.

Poch will pick different teams for different opponents, so having a range of different types of players is vital to our ability to adapt to whoever we are playing.

Having a player like Dier who not only covers a few positions, but is excellent in most of them, is a massive benefit to the squad as a whole, and that's been shown particularly this season where he has done well in central midfield and is now doing very well at centre back.

Of course we need Eric Dier. He's a top quality player who can play in multiple positions.
Would he get into my best starting XI if everyone was fully fit, no. But when do we ever have a fully fit squad??
Also I think this season he's showing that Pochettino was right, his best position being at CB.
He is an integral part of the squad.

We are really are a squad now not a team.We don’t have a defined best xi as we did last season.
Trippier/Aurier ?
Rose/davies ?
Dier/wanyama?
Winks/ dembele ?
Getting quite close to toby/dier ? Imo as well.Theres 4 Or 5 positions it’s really difficult to pick the 1 st choice. This is Exactly What we need to challenge seriously on 2 fronts.

In my opinion Dier makes the starting 11 every time. Personally i would have him ahead of Wanyama as the holding midfielder as i think he passes the ball better and, just as importantly, quicker than Victor.

However - Dier's mentality also puts him into the team. He is cool under pressure, stands up for his team, has a level-headed attitude and is a winner. At his young age - he has taken a lot on, and also takes on the role of mentor to the younger players - even tho he is only a year or 2 older.
I don't think we can underestimate the impact he has on the players around him.

I was just about to say it wouldn't surprise me if he captains England at some point over the next couple of games.

Of course we need Eric Dier. He embodies much of what this team are about.
Some nice comparisons to Lahm and his ability to change positions at a moments notice for the benefit of the team.

I'd have him above Kane and Lloris as captain at Spurs. Dier strikes me as a proper captain rather than rolemodel that we typically pick. Not that he isn't also that.

Speaking of which how many captains or leaders do we have in the team now...Kane, Lloris, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Dier, MASSIVE change from when he Poch first came to Spurs where we didn't have any reliable leaders or personalities.

For sure, although Kane is Mr Tottenham and a natural pick for me.

Dier really stood out against Madrid at Wembley last week, he was outstanding. He also stood out as a leader and there were four or five times he was rallying team mates or calling them out for sh*t passes or sloppiness. Leader.

I actually thought he was nailed on to be Spurs captain or vice captain after his change to midfield when he was immense for us, culminating in his threat to slice Fabregas’ throat. He never got it though, even when Kane and Lloris didn’t play in the cup games.

Very happy for him.

Wow wasn't expecting that but so happy for him and I think he deserves it, he's (pardon the cliche) a born leader and winner. Shame for him Kane is so talismanic as I could see him being spurs and England captain in a few years

I don't think it matters who is our captain on the pitch. Lloris as club captain is more than wearing the armband, and as others have said there are plenty of leaders on the pitch.

I was talking to the bloke next to me during the Palace game and he was saying Lloris takes the role very seriously, has weekly meetings with Levy, is invested in the direction of the club and as Balague has alluded to and is maybe axiomatic his future at the club is generally tied to Pochettino's.

This may all be untrue but seemed plausible to me.

If we keep our players and fast forward five/six years, if Lloris is no longer here or is not first choice....we will see Kane as captain of the club and I believe Dier as vice captain.

We could well have a plethora of national captains in our team in a couple of years. Can only be a good thing.
Lloris
Aurier? Possible no idea
Sanchez very likely
Davies very likely
Eriksen
Kane
Dier/dele When kane not in team
Son? Possible no idea

Wow, that will add another 10m to his price tag, we really should cash in as we obviously don’t need anymore England captains in our team
