I heard a rumour today that if banks etc. see online gambling on your statements etc. you can be denied a mortgage...you'd like to think it'd only be substantial gambling, but still.

I heard this before.

My understanding is it is only for high risk lenders.

So if your credit is really good and comfortable to afford a mortgage you’ll be fine.

But if you are considered a risk gambling transactions can be seen as more of a problem.

Also saw if you've a lot of money coming in and going out as cash withdrawals etc. you can be asked to close your account in 60 days if you're even suspected of money laundering.

If you're suspected of this you can have a Cat. 6 CIFAS marker put on your account which means you're pretty fucked.

Part of the reason I generally leave my winnings in my account and only withdrawal when I have a sizeable balance as they have little idea of how much I actually gamble. It also has the advantage of easily keeping track of my profit/loss.

FoBT addiction is fucking grim btw. Almost feel sorry for those guys.
I play these most days. I have my moments on them but half the time it's difficult to walk away when you feel it's easy mindless profit.

You do see some people completely lose control on them, though.

'Most days' wouldn't seem too great mate, do you think you could stop playing them if you wanted to?

I think so, yeah. I'm not out of control in my eyes, I go in with a viewpoint of getting say £100 profit or £150 profit, I get that and get out.

I guess to someone who doesn't gamble it's hard to justify it or what I do.

I do gamble, but sporadically enough (football and bigger race meetings) and never on FoBT's...they're not a good thing to get involved with regularly IMO.

The only guaranteed profit on FoBT's is to the bookies...designed to keep you playing with 'close' calls and random bonuses etc.

If you're realistic with yourself you've a chance of catching yourself on before it gets bad, but so many get sucked into life-changing debt with these before they realise you're never really up if you play with any regularity.

I only bet 5-10 quid a week on the footie. Have a punt on the NFL when that starts.

i do enjoy it as it makes the footie more interesting. But most of the time at 5pm sat im usually binning them.

Skybet sent me a free 2 quid bet for last sat and i bet it on 5 teams for 85 quid, 4 came in and it was riding on leeds beating derby. Was going to cash out at 50 quid at HT but thought I would let it ride and glad I did.

What I particularly take exception to is the stupid strap line 'When the fun stops, Stop'. How fucking ridiculous is that. It's like saying to an alcoholic 'When you feel yourself getting a bit tipsy it's time to switch to soft drinks'.

Agree. I said similar earlier in the thread. Absolutely ridiculous slogan. It would be laughable if gambling addiction wasn't such a devastating and sadly all too common thing.

I've watched people pour 1000's into those machines, convinced they know what the next number is going to be. I've been in some shops where people have proper lost it, picking up stools and smashing the machines. Saw one guy once in my local bookies pick up a stool and smash the 52" telly on the wall, not once, but 6 times, just to make sure it was proper smashed. He then just walked out.

Sad thing is, half the bookies would probably welcome him back with open arms the next day because the chances are he puts enough into their koffers via the machines every couple of weeks for them to buy 10 new TVs

I see some guys who get paid cash in hand just walk in and start feeding the machine.

Sad really, those machines should be banned.

I thought a lot of the sites only do soft searches on your credit record?

not that my credit record is any good after years of spending beyond my means... match betting means im sorting it out, if that stops me getting a mortage i'll just keep renting i wont stop betting.

Its not just substantial gambling but if you have gambling payments going out and you go overdrawn regularly then they are going to view that very poorly. Also paying intoa betting account from a credit card is a big no no.

It didn't affect my mortgage application at all.

Depends on your credit rating too...if you're always in the black, I'd say it's no issue.

If I'm out drinking on a Saturday afternoon I won't usually put a bet on, it's when I stay home on a Saturday afternoon that I'll most probably have a £5 acca running on the football.

For me, it adds a little excitement to the afternoon whilst flicking in and out of Soccer Saturday and the score updates.

Used to do a place pot on the horses, but only really back horses at Cheltenham festival now.

A closing story...sat with mates in my local one afternoon a few weeks back, horseracing on the TV next to our table
( sure it was Newmarket )

So, we're all their chatting, one eye on the TV. The horses are paraded out and led down towards start.

About 5 minutes before race I tell my mates who I fancy to win. Horse romps up 7/1 winner.

Next race, again before they've even entered the stalls call a 25/1 each way. Horse places 3rd, quarter of the odds.

My mates are now taking note, one or two passing the paper asking who I fancy in the next.

There were seven races that afternoon. I picked a selection at least 5 minutes before every race and ended up picking 6 winners and the 25/1 third place each way.

But here's the thing. Although a bookies is no more than 2 shops away from the pub I drink in, I didn't put one penny on any of the horses I picked.

My mates however did, they went with my selections and we're nipping out and backing them as winners.

They bought me plenty of drinks and we had quite a session come the end.

8/1s 7/1s 3/1s 25/1 e.w had it all going on.

Certainly felt like the main man for the afternoon. All and sundry buying me drinks for them gambling with their money after being daft enough to think I have some superior knowledge about horses than them.

Have to admit, great afternoon and glad my mates made a tidy profit.
