Reports in England suggest that the Spurs striker has been allowed home to help with his international preparations...

Mexican striker Giovani Dos Santos has not settled well at Tottenham Hotspur. Despite impressing with his his form in pre-season, the former Barcelona man has struggled with injury and has made negligible impact on the Spurs first-team.

The arrival of new manager Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane does not seem to have done the young Mexican any favours either, as two of Redknapp's more high-profile January transfer captures have been strikers - the returning pair of Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane.

Dos Santos seems to have received further confirmation of his lowly status in north London today, as Setanta Sports reports that the player has been allowed to return to Mexico for ten days in order to allow him to prepare properly for upcoming international commitments.

Spurs would have been well within their rights to prevent the player travelling, as a crucial north London derby with Arsenal is lurking on the near horizon, and Dos Santos will now definitely be unavailable for that game.

Interestingly, Harry Redknapp in a television interview today stated that (apart from the injured Defoe) he had "four good strikers" at White Hart Lane, in Keane, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Darren Bent and Fraizer Campbell. That Dos Santos' name received no mention, coupled with the fact that he has been allowed to head home for an international, is surely a sign that his future at Spurs is limited.

Dos Santos allegedly missed a medical at Portsmouth this week that prevented him joining the South Coast outfit.

Mexico face the USA in a crucial World Cup qualifier on February 11.

I think this puts too much emphasis on the fact Gio can play as a striker, he can also play any attacking midfield role so the fact we resigned Keane and Defoe should not matter to Gio as great deal.

I really hope we keep GDS. I also hope he's not another Ziegler

Definitely agree with your point at the end. From what I've seen of him, he's a typical continental/south american attacking midfielder. He's got a bag of tricks, an eye for a pass and can go past players for fun, but he's not an out an out striker as he's doesn't have that mentality.

I'd say that he, taarabt and lennon are fighting for one place in the team as a midfileder with licence to roam and not many defensive duties. On current and past form, there's no contest as to who is going to fill that role.

Have you seen Lennon play recently? He spends as much time defending as he does attacking. In this respect the progress he's made is astounding.

Good move this, allows him to get his match fitness up. I think he has a future under Redknapp i think the proposed move to pompey would've actually been a loan and would've been Redknapp helping out his old club at the same time giving Gio some PL pitch time, i think the reason he hasn't been used (as well as the reason pompey supposedly rejected him) is we aren't in a position to chuck the youngsters in at the deep end even in the last 15 mins of matches, look how many last 5 minute goals we've shipped in with supposedly seasoned pros' and you can see why 'Arry would be reluctant.

Gio showed more commitment in tracking back, and was more effective in tackling, helping out in defence and use of the ball in the 35 min he had against Man U than most of the so-called "seasoned pros" that are supposed to be a safer option in current situation.

The fact is that Harry would keep playing his pet boys like Bentley for his own purposes and deny any chance to someone he very probably dismissively refers to as "that little Mexican lad" or something similar, even if that "Mexican lad" may only need a few more 30-40 min appearances to sharpen his game and bring considerably more effectiveness to the team than some of Harry's regulars.

Oooooh... don;t even get me started on Bentley. Just seeing his pretty little much and highlighted hair make sme wanna smack the taste out his mouth.

He surely can't be that bad.
