HARRY Redknapp will allow Tottenham's recruitment drive to go "down to the wire" again this summer if necessary, despite the farcical dealings at the club in the last close season.

Having failed in their belligerent bid to keep hold of Dimitar Berbatov in 2008, Spurs were forced into selling the Bulgarian striker to Manchester United minutes before the deadline, midnight on August.

As a consolation, the Old Trafford side packed England under-21 rookie Fraizer Campbell off to White Hart Lane, while Roman Pavlyuchenko was also signed on deadline day - missing the first three games of the season.

Lilywhites fans will be hoping for a more measured approach this summer, but Redknapp admits that - while he would ideally like to have a completed squad in place before pre-season - Tottenham face a tricky, tactical test.

"It depends, we may have to go down to the wire. Some teams will look to hold their nerve on a player and say 'no we want this amount of money'," said the manager.

"It's all a juggling act, you make right decisions and wrong decisions. It's going to be a case of who holds their nerve in lots of cases.

"A club might say 'we want £12million for this player', when you know they really want to sell him because they need the money. It then goes down to the wire and it becomes a game of poker I suppose between the two chairmen."

Redknapp has already passed his wish-list onto chairman Daniel Levy and, despite having a reputation for being an expert in transfer dealings, the manager insists he will not be involved in delivering his targets.

"I've spoken to the chairman about the possible targets we'd like to get, so he'll work on that and see what he can do, but that's down to him - I don't get involved in that side of it," Redknapp insisted.

"All I do is identify the players, and then after that deals are down chairman to chairman or chairman to chief executive nowadays. Deals are not done by managers, and haven't been for years.

"We've got a list of players but getting them is not easy. They're good players who would improve us, but getting good players and getting clubs to sell them is not always easy.

"You can always get average players. Everyone wants to get rid of players who haven't done it, but getting players who have done well for clubs is not easy.

"We won't be doing anything unless we sell as well. We won't be looking to get rid of too many people but for us to bring anyone in we're going to have to shift one or two out, or do deals that involve some of our players. We're not in a position where we can go out and splash money around. We spent good money in the last window.

Oh well i'd better baton down the hatches and get supplies in....we're in for a hell of ride guys! :eek:mg:

Why can't we just get the business out of the way early and allow the squad time to settle ready for the new season?

Personally I think we are going to keep it tight until Man City make further moves in the transfer market, we just can't afford to go head to head with their financial clout. We'll lose out on a few players but pay reasonably for others.

Spurs saw in January with the Palacios and Bellamy transfers that we're both interested in similar players and if Man City really want the player (Bellamy) they can out bid us and even if their interested (Palacios) they can delay the transfer and bump up the fee.

I reckon Hughes has given the spiel that he needs a settled squad going into pre-season and that the board should get the players as early as possible (we tried to do it last year) - so that gives us a chance later in the window to get the left over players we want at the right price but it makes for a long, drawn out transfer window.

I agree that Hughes has probably done just that, but for example, how does he expect a settled squad and dressing room harmony when he's just forked out a stupid amount and silly wages for Gareth Barry, when he's got Stephen Ireland who's just as good getting probably a third of what Barry's getting?

There's bound to be a bit of jealosy and I for one hope it comes to a head between all their money grabbing football sluts.

    disagree with this article

we didn't fail over Berbatov - we got the money we wanted -in fact I think we even got a bit more in the end

we won that particular game with utd - they blinked in the end - partly because of man city coming in - they stumped up the cash we were asking for

where we failed was in not getting in a replacement for Keane

I felt at the time milito was a good shout - but we should have got someone as it must have been known internally that berbatov was unhappy and couldn't be relied on

but regardless of that, the sale of defoe then keane was the sign for action -

this time round we need a striker too - we should get that striker before selling if possible, but as long as we know at least three of our strikers are happy and ready to play - there's no need to panic

Bent is the key one here

with Bent you can even play with one striker

Why ask a question that he's already answered?

More of a request. We always end up paying pretty much what the other club wanted in the first place...maybe we get a slightly better deal but i feel we'd be better off getting the squad sorted early, ready to have some sort of cohesion before the season starts, as opposed to the poor starts that we see every season when we change things late on!

We can get players early and with the minimum of fuss, as proved by the Modric deal.
