Stewart Downing will submit a transfer request to Middlesbrough this morning following a bid of around £6m from Tottenham last week but the 24-year-old winger will have to fight to leave Teesside. Using typically uncompromising language, Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson yesterday stated that Downing will not be moving this month.

"I can confirm that we have received an offer from Spurs for Stewart Downing and I can also confirm that we have rejected that offer," Gibson said. "I've spoken to [Spurs chairman] Daniel Levy and told him categorically that their interest is not welcome. I've also told him that we will not entertain any further offers for Stewart or, for that matter, any other senior member of our squad. The same applies to Tuncay and it also applies to Gary O'Neil."

Downing (left) is known to be frustrated at the Riverside but he signed a new contract recently and Middlesbrough's chief executive Keith Lamb has also lambasted Spurs.

"Who on earth do they think they are?" Lamb said. "They bleated away when Dimitar Berbatov left for Manchester United in the summer but they sold at top dollar. Then they want to snatch other players for derisory offers and try to unsettle players. That is what has happened here. Their offer is a joke."

    Downing slaps in request

England winger Stewart Downing has handed in his transfer request.

The Middlesbrough-born wide man has told his hometown club that he wants to leave, with Tottenham trying to broker a deal for his services.

Spurs had a bid of £6million rejected over the weekend, although Sky Sports understands they have made a revised offer of over £10million.

Boro chief Steve Gibson insists that he will not be selling any of his big names in January - but with the player now confirming he wants to leave, it remains to be seen whether he will get his wish or not.

The Teesside club set a precedent with their current squad in the summer when they allowed the then unsettled Luke Young to quit the club for Aston Villa - which they had not initially planned to do.

Now Downing, along with Gary O'Neil and Mido, are testing Gibson's resolve further as all seek moves away from Teesside.

Another waste of space. Never tar

Another waste of waste of space. Never ever rated him.

Very good left peg and would provide "balance" to our team. However, has never lived up to his potential displayed 4 seasons ago. Can't beat his man either. I wouldn't be upset at a £6m outlay for him but he's no way worth £15m.

Good player. But confidence not always the highest. If he came to Spurs I doubt he'd be able to cope with the booing that starts after 3 bad games and never ends.

In the same class as Jenas and Bentley - i.e good enough to be in a squad chasing Europe.

Think this would be a waste of money when we have a more than capable winger in Bale. Bale's defending has not been as good as BEE and as such has been dropped, however his attacking is a lot better and his surging runs forward are better than Downing's. If Redknap had less money to spend I'm sure he's find a better player for less money elsewhere.

Promote Bale to left wing and he and BEE can overlap etc

Downing for me only works at a certain price say £6-£9m max - not a bum off seat type of player but with him one side and Bentley on the other we would have good balance plus Lennon as an impact sub late in the game.
Trouble is I am not sure we have the strikers to thrive off his delivery as yet

I must admit I thought at the time it was very strange why the hell a youngster would sign a 5 year deal with them, thats kinda pledging yourself to them and lets me fair they were unlikely to hit the heights ... Bet the agent did ok !! :)
But anyway, be a good asset at the right price !!! If Harry wants him thats good enough for me !!!

How can you put Bentley in the team ahead of Lennon? Baffling!
  9. The Original Yiddster
its the way its done these days......sign a new contract take a massive increase in wages and still bugger off when you fancy it. Only protection the club has is that they can ask, in theory a higher transfer fee, unless he has a release clause in the contract at a certain price which was I was thinking when I saw the £6m bid but this would seem way too low

posted a few times before as to why but to do with ability to maintain possesion, passing ability and delivery (which has been poor to date but will improve). Fact is that Bentley has only been very poor on maybe 2 ocassions but gets no slack cut from some, I think it is to do possibly with a little bit of the green eyed monster.

That's why they are called transfer NEGOTIATIONS. We have a figure in mind that we are willing to pay so naturally we go in UNDER that figure in the hope that they will either accept that or raise the asking price to the figure we ARE willing to go to. All we've done is showed interest in Downing and made an offer. If ya dont like it Mr Lamb, just say....dont spit your dummy out over it...geeeeeeez

A midfield of Downing, Appiah, Modric and Bentley sounds good to me.

He's handed in the transfer request now. Not sure how much good it'll do other than to piss Boro off.

Anyway, not my cup of tea, but he is a good player and would balance our side. Him and Lennon on either side would give us two very good wide options with which to get balls into the area for what looks like being two strikers if Defoe comes as well.

If you don't insult the other party with your first offer, you aren't negotiating properly. I think Gibson's upset at finally after a few years they are in a position to start progressing up the Premiership a bit, and now he might be losing one of his star players. No wonder he's annoyed. I don't believe Downing would have made a transfer request if Spurs didn't want him.

Just like Utd did with us over Berbatov. That's the way football is these days, sadly. The prospective club knows the player's interested then haggles the lowest price knowing the current club HAVE to sell.
Personally think he could be a left sided Bentley which I'm not sure is the answer.

Spot on mate - to hear groans around the stadium every time bentley touches the ball is getting me down, so think what it does to the player himself.

Jenas must be delighted with the signing of bentley & the potential signing of downing - if anything it takes the heat of him for a while.

Bentley is an absolute class act - if we could all just get behind the fella he might relax a little & start showing his wonderful abilility in the same way that he did for blackburn - any player who has scored a hat-trick against manu in the premiership is a good player imo ?
  17. sak11
    exactly!
we need to be getting behind all of our players and support... not like some of the guys who sit around me in the park lane who spoil every match with near continual abuse of various members of OUR team rather than using that energy to abuse the away team or more importantly SUPPORT our boys. We are the ones who should be making it difficult for the away team to play by showing our support and getting behind our boys during the game not getting on their backs.
  18. infamousyiddo
looks like this signing will happen, personally i think he an average player, but what it will give us is balance on the left, i also think this signing will see bentley dropped so that lennon can take his place on the right

I really rate Downing, hopefully this comes off, he will be ideal to balance up the left side and provide more ammo for the forwards.
