Dream the not so impossible dream

Evaluating a season where we break into the top four for the first time in Premier League history and where the team provide us with some of the best and most exiting football since the glory days of the 80’s, it is hard to want more.

And I really can’t ask for more. It has been a truly great season. But at the same time I can’t help imagining what might have been if the team had taken a few more chances in both Villa games (4 more points), against Hull and Stoke at home (5) and Everton away (2).

The chances were easily there to win these five games – and then we would have been in with a shout for the championship no less. I am not even counting the two Wolves losses – mainly because I only saw the first one, where we didn’t create anything and so didn’t deserve anything.

I know it is mostly wishful thinking, but my point is none the less that maybe we should start dreaming the not so impossible dream of challenging for the number 1 spot.

Recent history, statistics and the general perception of Spurs might prevent us from believing. But football history, statistics and perception counts for nothing tomorrow other than for example in the minds of journalists. The current – and immensely talented – Spurs squad should not be held responsible for what players before them did or (mostly) did not do.

Based on the exceptional talent and depth in the squad, the way they play their football and the new found possibilities of Champions League qualification, I think Tottenham Hotspur vintage 2010/2011 has every right to stake a claim for challenging the current top dogs.

I know there are several unknown factors: will we keep our key players? will new players disrupt the current cohesion and team spirit? will we at long last be able to match top teams away from WHL? how will the team cope with the added pressure of (hopefully) playing the best European clubs midweek and maintaining momentum in the Premier League at the same time? how will the players cope with injuries and fatigue? Etc…

But is it not every top players dream to be involved in such a scenario? Then now, the Spurs players have the opportunity to live that dream and show their true potential. I am so looking forward to witnessing that. And if they can continue playing the same brand of exciting and attacking football as we have seen this season, I am confident that we are in for even more thrills come August. I can hardly wait…

You will get shot down in flames for things like this. And although your point is valid. we were never going to beat everyone. Chelsea Arse and Manure didnt beat all the teams they were supposed to. We have come of the back of an appaling season and done really well. Lets not disect this season and see where we could have done better. What we need to do is look forward to next season and see how we can sustain a champions league campaign and still challenge in the league. But lets talk about that later.........much later.......

As you get closer to the top, the margin of error gets smaller and smaller, and it is harder and harder to improve & take down the team ahead of you. Nicking 4th is one thing; stepping up and consistently challenging in the league throughout a whole season (with the added distraction of CL football) is another. I don't think we have the experience yet, but I like the sentiment..

I like the sentiment though.

Errrr.....

Ofcourse we should be aiming to challenge for the title next season!!!
Now is not the time to be negative! Shoot for the moon and you'll land among the stars and all that shit!

We really are close, this season was no fluke, challenging for the title is the next logical, whether we can win it or not is as much down to the footballing gods as it is the talent in the squad.... But we HAVE to go for it!!!!

I FUCKING LOVE SPURS!!!

I like the sentiment.

I don't want to talk about the games against Stoke, Wolves, Villa etc as the reason we didn't beat those was becasue we lacked the most important thing in football - the ability to put the ball in the back of the net. It wasn't bad luck or anything we just didn't have the quality needed to finish them off.

I remember last time we finished 5th. We were temporarily in a very strong postion. We were widely acknowledged as the 5th best team in the Prem and our main competition was the teams above us not below. Unlike the previous season when we also finished 5th we kept all our best players and spent around 40m on a stronger squad. Our complacenecy and lack of ability to put our weaknesses right led to a terrible start, a sacked manager and seemingly back to square one.

Right now I believe the "big four" has temporarily turned into a "big six" with Villa and Everton ready to take out any who underperform. We have just had a great season but need to know that even if we keep our best players and bring in one or two extras this doesn't guarantee a better finish next season.

We should be aiming as high as possible of course but I'd hate for high expectations to lead to another sacked manager.
