NEW CONTRACT FOR EDWARDS

Posted on 29 July 2017 - 15:45

We are delighted to announce that Marcus Edwards has signed a new contract with the Club until 2020.

The attacking midfielder, 18, made his senior competitive debut as a substitute in our 5-0 EFL Cup third round win over Gillingham in September last year and also scored five goals in 10 appearances for us in the Premier League 2.

Earlier this month, Marcus was part of the England squad that won the UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

Really good news, especially as there were some mumblings about his mind not being right. Looks a real talent and would love to see him bedded in a little bit in the coming season.

If Edwards intention was to sign for the best club in the world, there was only going to be one result, so dont know what all the fuss was about.

(Now I can finish mopping the sweat from my brows!)

Good sign all round. We wouldn't of extended unless he had the right attitude and was willing to work. I look forward to seeing poch work his magic and get some minutes.

I know one of the coaches at Chelsea and apparently ME people were pushing for a switch to Chelsea last year, but they weren't interested.

His words to me were 'when the clubs asked me if we would be interested, I said that If everyone is fit, he wouldn't even get in his age groups team' at Chelsea.

The point I'm making is that we need to be realistic about where he is in his development. Sometimes we can all be too eager to give every exciting kid his break in the first team.

Like most on here, I think he's got bags of talent, but he's also got a long way to go before he can have a regular impact at PL level.

Poch sees him day in day out and if/when the time is right he'll give him an opportunity.

I agree we need to keep expectations realistic and dare I say it, I'm not sure he actually looks all that amazing from what I've seen so far ( obviously I hope the lad is something special )

How did you fight the urge to question the coach you know about Chelsea's track record of complete failure in nurturing young talent properly and how they managed to overlook KDB's obvious talent? It's the last club any young footballer should look to join, unless it's simply all about earning as much as you can as early as you can!

Fair enough. Sure they didn't think kane or winks or rose would be good enough either. Same coaches who let lukaku and de buryne go.

We should not get over excited but we shouldn't write him off either. We work in a different way to chelsea, lets see how good he can be.

I have it in good authority that it includes a clause whereby Kane has to make his bed. This Kid is destined for greatness
