I really think we should be going for this player. Here's why:

1) He would only cost about £3-6m.

2) Barca would probably let him leave, although he has recently won himself back into the first team and is playing well.

3) He would be excellent playing in our midfield. He's maybe not a typical playmaker, but a player that's very intelligent. he's great at distributing the ball around, one of the best link-up players in the game, and has a great eye for a killer defence-splitting passes. Plays simple passes and likes to be involved in the play, without taking too many touches each time. If we would play him with a good DM, or just with another good midfielder that can get stuck in, he would do wonders. And he scores a lot of goals, because he's a natural striker.

4) He's got a great attitude. Played at Chelsea for six years and never complained about anything. He was sometimes out of the team, and they bought a lot of strikers in these six years, but not once, did he go off crying in the papers. And what's better, he's one of those guys that never gives up. If he's out of the team, and has even been told "we don't need you" he still keeps fighting for his place in the team. Which is exactly what he's done at Barca this season. He was told in the summer that he could leave but he decided to stay. And he pushed his way back into the team in October and has been playing regularly since, both as a sub and as a starter. That's really something, when you consider he started the season as striker number 7 and fifth in midfield. And at Chelsea he fought for his place against players like Crespo, Drogba and Zola and always was first-choice at the end of the season. Maybe that doesn't matter, but i like players that show loyalty and are professional.

5) He's very versatile and can play in midfield, in the hole behind the strikers, and as a striker. He's most effective in midfield and as a second striker. He can play on the wings as well, but only when his team is chasing the game.

6) He's got loads of experience.

7) He's proven in the premier league.

One question is; would he want to join us?

...so what do you think?

I'm thinking that we haven't been linked to him and therefore this should not be in this forum...

but I would definitely not be opposed to signing him. Great player, and would almost certainly do a very good job for us. Not sure how well we'd do if we stuck him in midfield, we're attacking enough already...

We have been linked with him before (last summer) and when I saw him play tonight, I just wanted to put his name out there, for us to discuss.

I wonder how long it'll be before this appears on the Daily Mail website.

another good game tonight. why so few seem to want a midfielder who is playing regularly for BARCELONA amazes me.

410 minutes all season isn't exactly regular. And I suspect most people are thinking of him as a striker, not a midfielder.

Two years ago, worth a punt. Not now.

410 minutes is not correct. no way. where are you taking this number from?

he hasn't played regularly from the start. he was injured all summer, missed the first two months of the season and didn't play his first game for Barcelona until late in october. add the fact that he was not considered good enough to play upfront or in midfield so his chances were to be limited.

but what he did was to win himself back into the team, through injuries, and also by being professional, working hard, showing great attitude and performing when called upon. since he did this he's been playing regularly.

last 14 games Barcelona have played, he's been in the starting line-up 11 times, and came on as a sub in 2 others. only one game he stayed on the bench the whole time. i call that playing regularly. i'm not saying he's one their most important players, just saying he's good enough to play that many games for them.

so you think he's gone backwards over these two years? he's still the same player. he lacks pace and did that two years ago. i think he's a great player, both upfront (12 goals last season as a striker for barca, did that in only about 20 starts) and in midfield.

sorry for the long post.

p.s:
he considers himself as a midfielder now. so does rikjaard...and so did mourinho.
