Endless questions about Spurs authenticity are joyless

You are still missing the point, the article is talking about a biased agenda to belittle the accomplishments of a young team and manager punching above their weight. The bias in the media that is obvious to everyone except some on here that flippantly treat it as a persecution complex suffered by some fans. The negativity is real folks. Stop trying to dumb it down.
Yes every Club will be subjected to some negative press, that's inevitable.

Conspiracy and agenda are words that don't really desribe what's happening regarding Spurs and media coverage.

However i think it's reasonable, and accurate, to say there has been a general lack of respect towards Spurs in the media for sometime.

It's slowly starting to change now with some pundits. You hear the likes of Neville, the one who has probably been the most consistently praise worthy, particularly of Poch for sometime. More recently Ian Wright and Bellamy - who's comments were brilliant I thought.

But there has been a general lack of respect towards us in the media. We've been punching above our weight for some time and just keep progressing and getting stronger, growing organically and playing some fantastic football with a core group of young English players.

It's just rarely acknowledged, that we're consistently outperforming most of our competitors from a disadvantaged position, and doing so in style.

Compare and contrast to the zillions Mourinho has spent and the football he serves up.

For the first time recently though I think it's slowly going to start changing.

Listening to Craig Bellamy's comments was surreal.

You earn respect then demand it. If someone is not giving your club respect there is a reason.

Social media followers are not a metric to use for your argument.

Why not?

If i'm a company that makes hot dogs and hamburgers and hamburgers are selling at 4-1 then i am going to produce more hambugers than hot dogs. Sorry, that's business.

Social media followers are not a metric to use for your argument.

Someone made the point that the media favour teams with the biggest following. Man City have a bigger media following than us. How many are plastic, never go to games, live in Africa etc is entirely irrelevant.

They do - Trophies equal media following ?

I would also say though they have less match day fans.

Don’t disagree, Leicester did the other year too. Nothing to do with number of fans.

So why does Bluemoon have almost 3 times the number of members than here? They're not fans either?

No they didn’t.

Don’t agree. They favour the teams who are proven winners as they can spout more in greater security about how good they are.

City do not have more fans than us

And then you used the wrong metric. Looking at follows and likes is too simplistic, I work with one of these companies (they’re actually in the same building as Man City ironically) and it’s not how they measure engagement.

There are several reasons for this but the main one is that there are millions of accounts that will like or follow both Spurs and Man City but engage with neither.

To be clear, I don’t actually give a shit about who has more or better fans, it’s an argument for mugs and by mugs but number of Social followers is definitely the wrong metric to use.

I get that. But that perception will not change if we don't win anything. It will only be enforced if we lose at palace.
It has nothing to do with how much we have spent it is about consistency.
We have come close, semi in the fa, final in the league cup, finishing 3rd and second in the league. Everyone agrees we have a great team on our day. We just need to show we are the best all season.
Last five teams to have beaten Real Madrid in CL have gone on to drop points in their next league match.
Bit worrying.

Trophies are vital to some fans and irrelevant to others.
Partly because we haven't won much lately.
I don't put much store by them
and the media attention and praise (see Jamie Carragher)
is in spite of this though it is a useful stick to beat us with.

As soon as we win something, you know like the CL
the goalposts will be moved(geddit?)
and they will be on the 'Can they do it every week, month year decade etc'
Like we used to do with JJ when he had a good game.

Get more pleasure from watching and thinking about Spurs
than I have for literally decades.

Trophies are the icing not the cake.
Nothing wrong with honest fruit Dundee.

Trophies basically amount to fuck all? Eh?

I agree that you can also measure the success of a club by performances, entertainment, the wider aspects of the club (bringing through youth, financially balanced, new stadium, etc.), but to say that trophies don't count for anything is nonsense. It's perfectly natural for the media to question our ability to win trophies until we actually do. This is not bias or conspiracy. The media also heap lots of praise on us.

What has football being all about cash got to do with media reporting? It's frequently acknowledged that we're punching above our weight, so what's the issue?

Liverpool may be at a similar level to us now, but since we last won the FA Cup they've won nine major trophies, including the Champions League. Yes they've got more cash, but they're way more successful. There is plenty of negative media reporting about them, and Coutinho to Barcelona was a constant story all summer.

I think you’ve misunderstood my post.

Trophies damn well matter, as they should. However, what I am saying is that the reason the media keep stirring the pot with us is because cash is king in the modern game, and they know we don’t have as much as the other top clubs.

But they don’t like to use that as their narrative. 2 years ago they used to say ‘Spurs won’t keep their best players unless the consistently finish in the top 4’. Now we’re doing that they’ve decided to just move the goalposts and, for about 8-10 months now, have been saying there will be a mass exodus unless we win a trophy.

And I just don’t think that’s true.

I certainly don’t think winning, for example, an FA Cup will suddenly make Danny Rose decide that he’s actually fine on 70k per week and United’s £150k p/w can do one.

It’s a shame to have to write that because when I was a kid the FA Cup meant so much to fans and players alike, but this is where we are with football now. Sadly.

The truth is that only one team can win the league and for two years now we have been the sole challenger to the Champions. So, we are now regularly competing for the one domestic trophy that really matters to these players and they can clearly see the insane, exciting progress we are making each season.

The only reason I can see a player wanting to jump ship at this point is for cash

Obviously Rose wants more money and I think if other players ask to leave now it’ll be for the same reason.

An excellent article. The author is absolutely spot on. It's a shame a few of you have missed his point. All this 'they've got to win something or else it's meaningless' is complete and utter bollocks. Craig Bellamy explained it perfectly. He said WE ARE WINNING. Wigan won the FA Cup recently. Does that make them more successful than Spurs? It must do as they've won more FA cups than us in the last 25 years. And I wouldn't swap clubs with any Leicester fan either despite their trophy cabinet being bigger than ours recently.

We used to be happy getting in the top 6, then celebrated getting into the top 4 the odd season. We've now finished 3rd, and 2nd. We're going to be close again. We've qualified for the CL 2 seasons running. We've qualified from the so called group of death in the CL with 2 games to spare. Remember all the other fans and pundits when we got drawn in that group. Oh how they laughed. Now apparently it's meaningless if we don't win it!

Every time we succeed at doing something all the pundits, media and other fans said we couldn't do, their only response is 'but have they won anything yet'. Oh fuck off already!

Our points total last season would've won the PL 8 times in seasons gone by. 8 fucking times!!! When Arsenal were winning PL titles it was a 2 horse race between them and Utd each season. Then the Russian mafia took over at Chelsea and now we have an oil rich nation funding Man City. How many titles have Arsenal won since these teams emerged? And don't forget every time we started to build a team back then Fergie would come and buy our best players and put us back years again. They can't do that now.

But now we're trying to finish above 3 financially doped teams. Teams that think nothing of spending half a billion on players a season. We also have Arsenal and Liverpool with far more financial resources than us. We finished above them all 2 seasons ago and above them all last season bar Chelsea who had no European football.

If we win a trophy great. It's not how I measure this team. For me it's a miracle we can compete at this level at all and each time we do we are winning.

Doubt you’ll be saying that in ten years if this team wins absolutely nothing.

That’s what the article is about though. It’s saying that what happened to enjoying the moment

Why not allow people to suspend their fear of what the future could hold - ‘if this happens’, or ‘when that happens’ - and instead appreciate the ‘now’.

Because what we’ve achieved over the past two years is something to be proud of, and we’re just getting started.
