Just seen this on Twitter. A Journo claims that :

Jimmy ‏@JFergusonSPORT 3h
First openly gay PL footballer who played for England last night will come out as gay on Sunday in a @SunSportNow @TheSunFootball exclusive

Cue the Ashley Cole rumours again?

Anyways, its a good thing for whoever he may be, to be able to openly express his sexuality. We as fans need to prove that there is no place for hate in the game. Good Luck (unless its Ashley of course ;) )

If you were going to "out" yourself, why choose a red top like the Sun to spearhead your revelation?

I have far more respect for someone like Tom Daley who just simply accepted that, despite it being none of anyone elses bloody business, it was better for him to do the announcing than leave it to some hack journo to spin one way or another.

Although, that said, wanting a big entrance and fireworks is rather camp...

I can already imagine the:

"Does your boyfriend know you're here?" Chants.

If it was me I wouldn't give a fuck what the fans think/do as they abuse players week in week out anyway. I would be more concerned about my fellow peers and what they thought so I hope, whoever it is, that they are treated no different as they were before.

Anyone think that the sun did something untoward in getting this information and then blackmailed him into doing an exclusive? Ie: we've got these photos that we're going to print but we won't if you give us an exclusive?

Sounds very plausible.

Wouldn't surprise me.

If, however, this is entirely voluntary, I'll have a lot of respect for them....even if it's Cole or Wilshere.

See I was thinking about this the other day, is football ready for a openly gay footballer. Here is the response Michael Sam got after announcing he was gay.(Michael Sam is a leading college american footballer)

This was his ranking(NFL draft) the night before the announcement of him announcing he was gay to the day after!

He has gone from a potential first round pick, to not being picked. Though some teams have said they will have him.

After his announcement players, teams and GM's said they wouldn't want him in their team. Is football that different. Worth noting this sport has accused rapist, dog killers, potential murder suspect and etc. and this is where a sport draws the line.

Is football ready, I'm not sure.

I'd like to think it is but it probably isn't.

I know when Gareth Thomas (welsh rugby player) came out the support he received was great. He was suicidal at times and when he told his fellow teammates they said "why the fuck didn't you tell us sooner" and he just broke down. Anyone who gives this player shit should be dealt with IMO

There is nothing untoward about that and besides, he could have just gone to a rival paper or announced it himself if he didn't like what Sun on Sunday were doing, the story is that big (even though it shouldn't be) that agent would have even had copy approval.
Sun on Sunday is the best way to go, highest circulation and will actually reach the people who are more likely to make up the dodgy chants. The paper offers his business team opportunity to exploit the situation for the massive financial gains and maximise the players public exposure.
