I'm supposed to be revising, and being a little bored, I was wondering what the most successful clubs in england are, not in total trophies won, but taking into account the prestige inherent in each of those trophies.

So I put all the winnings into a table, and giving a coefficient to each trophy, came up with a list of the total value of each club's trophy haul. The results are surprising in some respects:

Its great to see that despite their recent successes, we are still some way ahead of chelsea. And next time some idiot west ham fan claims that their club is bigger than ours just show them this thread.

If you are interested, the league and european cup are worth 5, fa cup is worth 4, uefa and cup winners are 3, league cup is 2, and charity shield/super cup is 1.

And yes I know, I'm a bit sad.

the fairs cup was the predecessor to the uefa cup, which only started in 1971. i think an english team won that 4 times: leeds (won twice and was in 4 finals), newcastle and arsenal.

doesn't affect the standing order though.

Good idea and fair play for taking the time to do it.

However, your points system is maybe a tad flawed. Giving the league and CL 5 points, then the FA cup (which we happened to have won 8 times ) 4 points, then the UEFA cup 3, is a bit odd.

Should probably be something like CL 10, League, 8, UEFA 6, FA 4 etc.

Just my opinion of course but if i showed this thread to a hammer, he'd just laugh the points system off cos you've given 4 points to the FA cup winners.

But saying that, nice to see us up there anyway,

I reckon the UEFA and FA Cups should be the same amount of points. Other than that, can't see much wrong with it.

Winning a league championship is definitely as prestigious as winning the european cup in my opinion. Its certainly harder. As for the FA cup, it is one of the most famous cup competitions in the world and I'm sure most would choose to win that over the Uefa cup any day. Thats how I saw it anyway.

The hammer would then say they won the world cup which would be worth 200pts and put them top of the tree!

i don't see anything wrong with the fa cup getting 4 points. for a while it was THE trophy that english clubs wanted to win with the whole nation watching.

Not so long ago when the European Cup was just for the champions, the UEFA was probably the harder tournament to win, certainly tougher than the FA Cup.

Good effort gregga and I can't argue much with your table, but the points system is always going to be a contentious one.

I assume you have included pre 1900 trophies (hence Villa and Everton being above us). I used to have a similar table that the Times compiled of post 1900 results and we are 4th.

yeah take out pre-1900 trophies and villa fall well down the rankings. It does seem a bit unfair to exclude an fa cup 1899 and include one from 1900 though.

If anything it would be more helpful too see a table for post ww2 trophies, since thats when the professional game truly emerged.

yeah pre 1900 and post 1900 makes absolutely no sense to me. now pre WW2 and post WW2 makes a ton of sense.
