No England in the European championships, no home nations at all for that matter!

So what you going to do next summer ?

Option 1: Develop an unnatural passion for Wimbledon and the cricket?

Option 2: Another unapealingly miserable option: watch the games with an underlying feeling of indifference and regret!?

Option 3: To give the tournament some spice why not support one of the major nations at euro 2008.. after all one of these teams is more likely to enjoy a long run in the tournament if not maybe going all the way!

Well I can't bring myself to support any of these big football nations, we're supposed to be one of them after all, they're our footballing rivals and inexplicably thanks to Mclaren *shudder* we're not there to compete with them!!!

the big football nations...

Germany
Holland
France
Portugal
Spain
Italy
Czech Republic
Sweden

Okay so we agree supporting any of the big teams is out.

Let's look at the rest...

Poland: (annoying and boring)

Greece: (two boring wins on the bounce? no please!)

Turkey: (another annoying football nation)

Croatia and Russia: (obviously not going to support either of these.. the reason England are out!)

So who's left?...

Ahhh yes the blessed Romania.

To be honest the reason I'm on this bandwagon is because I have a history supporting the Romanian national football team..

I followed them through USA '94, the last time England failed to qualify for a major tournament, a summer of world cup agony lay ahead so me and a few guys at school decided to pick a random team and support them with all our might, Romania was my first choice for some reason, I guess just to be quirky, it was the first team I thought of, well to add some extra spice we all went down the bookies and put a fiver on our respective teams, from there on in, it was a roller coaster.

The stand out moment for this great Romania side was undoubtedly the spectacular win against Argentina in the second round, Romania played some incredible football, with the great Georgie Hagi pulling the strings they ended up winning 3-2.
The eventual, untimely end was dealt when Sweden knocked them out on penalties in the quater finals.

It wasn't just me who fell in love with their adopted team that summer, my mate Dave (a Welshman who must have the same dilema every 2 years) had an even more exciting ride when he was shrewd enough to pick Bulgaria who went on to beat Germany and end up in the semi finals led by the likes of Yordan Lechkov and the great Hristo Stoichkov!

I'll never forget the excitement we experianced during that tournament and the love I developed for those Romanian heroes, they became as familliar to me as the English players I've supported at world cups over the years.

Romanian legends of '94..

Note of course the 2 ex spurs players.

Bogdan Stelea GK
Dan Petrescu
Ioan Lupescu
Gheorghe 'Gica' Popescu (yid)
Florin Raducioiu
Gheorghe Hagi (c) "The Maradona of the Carpathians"
Ilie Dumitrescu (yid)

Okay so I don't know to much about the current crop of players, (Captain Cristian Chivu and Adrian Mutu the most recognized), however they won their group finnishing 3 points ahead of Holland!

I'm nailing my colours to the mast now and I'm going to prep up on the team over the next seven months in readyment for the big k.o.

So join me and let's all get behind the boys from the Black see next summer, put some money on them to add even more spice, (they're bound to have overly long odds due to their low profile) before you know it you'll have forgotten about the heartache of that rainy wedneday at Wembley.. Scott who?....... see it's done.

Enjoy Euro 2008..........Support Romania.

According to all the reports I've read Poland have been anything but annoying and boring since Beenhakker's taken over.

Tottenham is going to be a fun place if they're drawn against Turkey!

If you go back far enough, my mum's family were Dutch, so that's where my loyalties will be...
