I find it surprising for people to say we didn't improve last season because of an unforced change being Carrick. Last season was a major achievement because we competed on all fronts. The squad was tested to its limits both mentally and physically, many members of the squad probably playing there maximum allocation of games throughput there fledgeling careers as far. To then maintain the desire and power to finish strong and claim 5th, it was most definitely an improvement IMO.

How anyone can say we didn't improve last season should try playing football instead of looking at it as a mathematical formula based on stats.

FYI I'm not saying we didn't improve last season if that's what you believe. All I'm saying is the number of changes caused us to drop points until after christmas

To keep Berbs we need top 4

However unless we buy a world class Centre Midfielder then our most optimistic position is 5th. Hopefully we'll pull away from the chasing pack and be biting at Liverpool's and Arsenal's heels.

The game is won in the middle of the park and until we have our own Gerrard, Fabregas, Scholes, Lampard we'll never dominate games the way the big 4 can

Praying for Taarabt to blossom next season if not.....

Must win a Cup.

Nobody will remember or celebrate who comes 2nd 3rd or 4th, so it has to be a cup win.

I would prefer a UEFA Cup win just to show l'arse how to win in Europe.

But 4th is still on. Beat L'arse and Liverpool and there's no reason not to claim a Champions League spot.

smashingfoxysome sort of trophy. Id be happy with 5th-7th and uefa cup or FA Cup.

I don´t agree on this. On a short term a trophy is nice, but in the long run I only see top-4 as a goal. I would be happy "to sell" all cups for a top-4 finish. It would really benefit our chances to bring in quality players and alos make fantastic financial benefits.

Couldn't agree more

I think this season will be a little tougher with the new players that the likes of Spam, Crapston Villas, Citeh and the Barcodes are bringing in. Hopefully this time we'll benefit from not making too many changes whilst still improving the left hand side situation

Not the same 'ol same ol' this season!

I pray that we do not see the 'same old' Spurs this season. I have been through the GLORY YEARS and I have a feeling that we are on the eve of another period of GLORY....I hope!
What irks me a bit is the apparent lack of motivation among 'some' of the squad who seem to have 'bought into' the myth of being an established Premiership player! They can only call themselves such AFTER CL qualification (ok not in theory!). I, like many other Yids, have grand dreams for the new season....I believe that we are only a few points off CL next year, BUT I still have my fears and doubts.
Having read some of the comments below....I am encouraged by what MAY transpire, this new season, but......the doubts remain! As I say, I grew up on a diet of a Tottenham League Double and several FA Cup/ League Cup triumphs, and I feel that it is time for our younger fans to breath the air that success brings....Again....I HOPE.....! OK...as you may possible have noticed from my waffling on.....I am excited....but....afraid to relive the past GLORIES....but someone has to do it! COYS!

Off the top of my head, yes!

Right, it's a double edge sword. The players have been an improvement but the downside to improving the squad has been a lowering of performance while they bed in

The way we were playing at the end of 05/06 was very similar to the way we were playing at the end of last season, winning most games, playing well, bags of confidence. If we'd started this season with the same team I believe that we'd have probably done better. The only problem was the sale of Carrick.

Let me put it another way, there's no reason why we can't win our first 3 or 4 games next season. For the team that finished the season, they're 4 winnable games. However if we get two midfielders, another striker and a defender that's a completely different team and while they may be better individuals their understanding as a team would be lacking.

Still not convinced? Look at Man U, they rarely bring in a lot of first team players each season, Chelsea have bought better players but they're not a team and often individual skill gets them out of jail. Or look at teams like Everton, Bolton or Reading, who's players aren't great but they're teams with players who are used to playing with each other over the course of several seasons.

I'm not against bringing more players in this summer, but they should be eased in as the season progresses, getting a feel for things in training, getting a few appearances off the bench etc. Let the team play with confidence before destabilising them

I agree with much of this, but really! Chelsea aren't a team and reply on individual skills??? Eek
Chelsea are the most team built of the top 4! Which explains why Mourihno will have a heart attack every time JC is found wanting of his position, and why the Cup final was won with a patch-work defence.

I think we should aim for 4th, hek, we should and no doubt are aiming for the championship. The thread however was about expectations - naturally that would be based on looking at what we have in comparison to others and making a judgement. So we could expect to be champs but we have sod all to back up such a claim, when we clearly aren't the best team in the league (not discounting the LWs but a spade's a spade).

:bang: Bet they'll be real gutted when they're playing in the champs league every year

We can already 'show' them how to win in Europe - look at the honours listing

Top 4 would be great. At arsenal's expense. If we don't it seems like we'll lose berbs and probably become less attractive as a destination for talented players. A trophy and 5th would be acceptable in my opinion but i'm not sure whether it will be enough to ensure our star player's remain.

some sort of trophy. Id be happy with 5th-7th and uefa cup or FA Cup.

My feelings summed up by first two posts. This and Totoner's rather succinst 'Progress'.

Exciting times - and looking at the fixture list I think at least 13 points is possible from the first six games. Achieve that and top four a possibility. Infact, 13 points from first 5 games (supposing 4 wins and a draw at OT), and the ArseScum at the Laner looks enticing - so, 13 or even 16 points from first six games, and who knows where it could end.

Alternatively, we could flop badly - memo to self: "Don't count chickens blah blah blah blah blah blah"

Ooooh the joy of 'closed season' DREAMING and it get's better every season!
I, for one, am confident that, with a large pinch of good old common sense, we can cement ourselves in the Top 4....or higher. The 'silly' defensive blunders HAVE to be reduced....and, if done on a consistent basis, why not expect the 18 or 20 extra points for ECL? COYS!

Just thought it was interesting to look back on last summer before we had signed a lot of good players, before we brought in a new top class manager to get us top 4, before we finally got that bit of well earned luck (contrast how we got a lucky penalty versus Chelsea in 2008 versus how we gave away a "penalty" against Sevilla in 2007) and won something, that even after all the improvements, that we now, in the summer of 2008, no longer expect to achieve top 4 in the coming season.

I think we have a chance of coming 4th. I think we will have our best season in a long time. Probably 5th but challenging for 4th with no inferiority complex against the supposed top 4. Also a good chance of winning a cup.

I'm glad you dug this out - here's my comment

13/6/07

'Looking at our squad as it stands - I can't see top 4 - we desperately need a good back up to Berba - and probably a top class or at least no-nonsense midfielder too and another CB and maybe a LW

at the start of this window a lot of people thought the squad just needed some minor adjustments/ one or two players (maybe some still do)

I thought we needed 3/4 quality players and a net spend of £30-40m over the summer to challenge for top 4 - the way it is now it might be I was being optimistic'

How right was I :)
