I really think there has been a significant change in our finances. Once the club stopped being a plc there was no longer a legal obligation to make transfer costs and other financial details available. Lots of rumours about Lewis being involved more, and about possible funding from overseas.

Other things seemed to suggest this as well. Sigurdsson turning down the opportunity to work with Rodgers again in favour of Spurs (not saying we're not a more attractive team than Liverpool, but money is always important). AVB saying that Levy approaches transfers in a "different way" really made me think that we have the money, but are going out of our way not to advertise the fact. Lewis or A.Nother might be putting a huge amount of investment into the team, however it's in Levy's nature to keep costs to a minimum wherever possible. What good would come from publically stating that we have the cash to step up to a level that can compete with United, Arsenal and Liverpool (if not Chavski and City)? None.

I think JJ knows exactly what is going on, but is quite correctly avoiding any comments on it. He's already posted about Lewis in a way that implies a shift in his recent input, then gone noticeably quiet when the topic of investment has come up.

I think the powers that be reckognise where we are as a club. We're not knocking on the door of the top 4. We're a team that has finished in the top 4 twice in three years. Now is the time to step up investment when we are in the mix. A new, young manager, an incredible new training facility, a new stadium on the cards...this is the perfect time to start competing with the big boys.

Having said all that I don't think we'll get Falcao. It's my belief that we're using the investment money on wages rather than transfers. I suspect we'll smash our transfer record by re-investing the sale of Modric by bringing in Moutinho, but I can't see us bringing in someone like Falcao.
I agree. My point was that we don't need to get carried away with the unrealistic Falcaos - our true targets are exciting transfers in their own right.

Yeah I sort of went completely off topic then tried to drag it back on at the last minute!

I actually don't think Vertonghen was all that realistic. Obviously we signed him so it wasn't that unrealistic in the end, however I think bringing in a player of Vertonghen's ability is an incredible achievement. He's not a player that is still at the level of 'prospect' like Modric, Berbatov, Sandro or Bale. He was an established talent at one of the top teams in Europe.

FC Porto are believed to have threatened to report Atletico Madrid to FIFA as they claim money remains outstanding from last summer's €40 million transfer of Radamel Falcao.

Adrian not seeking Atletico exit
Spanish daily Marca has reported that Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa was close to making an official complaint that could see FIFA impose a transfer embargo on Atletico.
The Spanish club agreed to pay €40 million for the Colombia striker last July, with the money to be paid in installments: €22 million was paid at the time, €9 million was due by July 2012 and €9 million next year. Porto have only reportedly received €6.5 million of 2012's payment.
Sources at Atletico told Marca that there was money outstanding but it would be paid soon, once the club received money due to them for transfers completed this summer. Atletico have moved on eight players this transfer window, including Argentine winger Eduardo Salvio to Benfica for €10 million and young Spanish defender Alvaro Dominguez to Borussia Moenchengladbach for €8 million.
With Atletico hugely in debt - including a reported €215 million owed in taxes - chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin said last spring that Falcao would be sold this summer if the club did not qualify for the Champions League. He then backtracked after the striker's superb double strike saw off Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in last May's Europa League final.
Falcao was accompanied from Porto to Atletico last summer by Portuguese international Ruben Micael. Los Colchoneros reportedly paid €5 million for the midfielder, who spent all last season on loan at Real Zaragoza and has recently joined Portuguese club Braga in another loan move.
Both Falcao and Micael are represented by Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes. Persistent rumours in Spain have linked Mendes with a third-party investment fund that helped Atletico sign Falcao and retains some of the player's economic rights. Gil Marin has denied these stories, saying the club own 100% of the Colombian's registration.
Falcao, who scored 36 goals for Atletico last season, and 31 goals the season before for Porto, has previously been linked with many of Europe's top clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Juventus.

I know it's not going to happen, but what if? Just had a look at some Youtube videos now, and jesus tittyfucking christ he's good. I've seen enough of him both at Porto and Atletico Madrid to know that already, but still. He scores some incredible goals.

I really think that if there is ONE player we should go out of our way to sign it's Falcao. What a monster!

I'm happy with signing Adebayor too though, but just imagine for one second having a strikeforce of Falcao and Adebayor.. One can always dream.

Rare to see his combination of skill and being absolutely fearless in the box.

Just watched that video. He reminds me of Defoe.

Okay, just kidding. He certainly knows where the goal is. Sign him up! :D

This won't happen.

This really won't happen.

I have completely convinced myself that this won't happen.

...this could happen.

no it couldn't... well, keep telling yourself that anyway.

amazing the amount of headed goals he gets for a short-ish fella. There were a couple of crackers in there but most of it was just supremem positional awareness and super composure. I'd take him... but it's a pipe dream

Falcao is probably the highest profile player we could ever sign given he's not already at one Europe's elite clubs.. though Atletico are probably higher profile than us given their exploits in Europe. But we'd never fork out the £50m needed to nab him without a SugarDaddy or CL money.
I'd cream my pants if we ever signed him. He is simply another league.
Amazing how Atletico replaced Aguero with someone of his calibre so effortlessly.

It would take at most what they paid for him, but I think given the financial trouble Athletico are in you could get him for less.

They only paid like half so that was about €20mill, the rest was paid by 3rd party as was his wages and the only way they can pay his wages was by qualifying for CL, which they didnt

his fee is will go down closer to deadline, as said before his fee wouldnt be a issue, if levy was prepared to buy hazard this would the same if not less money. The issue is his wages as he is on €150k a week atm apparently

We'd still have to pay between €30m and €40m to get him. Then we'd struggle with wages too.

I think what a lot of people don't realise about Athletico, Is that their debts are just as bad as last year when they bought Falcao and that did not stop them then, So it is unlikely they are gonna sell him on for pennies, All their debt is Tax debt and they are in a similar position to Rangers but with one major exception and that is unlike the HMRC, Spanish government are trying to support what they see as their Golden age in football, With the national team doing so well and having arguably the two biggest clubs in the football world. If they started to call in all unpaid taxes in Spanish football, It would more than likely destroy it in one swoop.

I read in a article that I posted in this thread that Athletico Madrid`s Success was built on a foundation of sand and sooner or later it will come down, They are having success where as someone like Rangers have paid a heavy penalty for the tax debt they have been riddled with. I am glad really that we are so well run and that we don`t put our very existence in the hands of the tax man. If we sign Falcao, It will be because we can afford him.

This guy is immense. But so would be his transfer fee and wages.

I'm anticipating a mega bucks offer in Jan for him from Chelski and Citeh.
