Jermain Defoe says he can't wait for next season.

The striker only returned from World Cup action with England on Monday.

He provided a rare highlight in South Africa by scoring the winning goal against Slovenia to ensure England's progress into the knockout stages.

Jermain played again as the Three Lions were eliminated from the tournament 4-1 by Germany in the last 16 on Sunday.

Speaking on his return, Jermain's focus had quickly turned to 2010-11, getting back into pre-season training, competing in the Champions League and facing City at the Lane on the first weekend of the season.

"It's crazy," smiled Jermain. "I said to Ledley and Crouchy on the plane that the first game in the Premier League is really only just around the corner.

"You always look at the next game and the next important game is City on the opening weekend. We're all looking forward to it.

"I can't wait to get back for pre-season and see all the lads again. I always get that buzz. You go on holiday but I'm always ready to come back.

"To be honest, after a couple of weeks, I want to get back to playing football."

    Croats back in action

Niko Kranjcar and Vedran Corluka have been back in training at Spurs Lodge this week.

The Croatian internationals have been sweating it out with our fitness and conditioning coaches as they enter the final phase of their rehabilitation after picking up injuries at the end of last season.

Alot's been said about us looking to recruit a big forward who can hold the ball up, supposedly to play alongside JD. I for one would be disappointed if we started next season with Defoe being assured of a starting role. He panics in front of goal and contributes little else when not scoring. He can be good on his day, and CAN produce a spark out of nowhere but overall I see him as a second rate striker.

I agree. In fact I feel that when he's set in mentally for a dry spell even Harry can't get him to produce the goods.

He really is a Hot and Cold player. Its why I think its tragic that Robbie Keane has lost his egde. I would have loved to have had back the Sheringham to Berbatov era Keane, who was much better on his day, and more consistant, that Defoe is.

Still, when Defoe decides he's going to have a good run you can't really fault his goal scoring record. For that reason alone I hope he decides to have a run of good form when it counts this season!!
