Actually his hand and lower arm were not tight against his body, his hand was out in front of him and had it hit his hand directly it would have been a nailed on penalty especially as he turned his arm towards the ball, it didn't just hit him because he couldn't avoid it.
That was probably behind the referee's thinking, it did hit his upper arm after all, so the only argument is whether it was intentional, I think probably not.
I do think we could make an argument for a penalty had it gone the other way though.
Recent IFAB interpretations of the hand ball law take into account using your arms to make yourself bigger. In that respect I agree with your points; his arm was away from his body, making it more likely that he block any shot. However, the player was only a few yards away from the shot and had no time to react. I believe the referee saw the outstretched elbow, and accoding to new interpretations, gave it, not knowing that it hit his back shoulder first. Referees with a hard-on for the rules give that, I would not. Referees have to be 100% that there's an infringement and not just guess at it, especially in such an important situation.

I think he did react though, he jumped up and turned side on so it wasn't like he was standing there and it hit him or he didn't have time to get out of the way.
I'm certainly not saying it was a nailed on penalty, actually I think it was harsh but on the BBC this morning they were going on about it being one of the worst decisions ever made but when I saw it that's not what I saw.

I've only seen it on the news this morning, but surely the ball strikes his back and/or possibly the top of his arm? It doesn't look like it hits the part of his arm that's away from his body.

I would be outraged if that penalty was given against us and I hope I'd have my head screwed on well enough to not claim it was a penalty if it happened to one of our opponents.

To me he was turning AWAY from it, not leaning towards it etc. To me it's a natural reaction to having a ball fired toward your face. Thought it was terrible, but hardly the worst we've ever seen. Given the circumstances, I'd bet the ref isn't overly proud of the decision.

Lets hope for the 2-0 win in Switzerland.

I see Corey Evans has had to apologise on behalf of his racist Millie of a wife

From Daily Mail

Corey, who started his professional career in the Manchester United youth setup, said in a statement: 'On behalf of my wife, I would like to apologise unreservedly for the content and language contained in the Tweet that she issued last night.

'The comments were published in the heat of the moment and are not representative of her views.'

And now he has came out and apologised on behalf of his missus saying her comments were unrepresentative...

He said: “On behalf of my wife, I would like to apologise unreservedly for the content and language contained in the Tweet that she issued last night.

“The comments were published in the heat of the moment and are not representative of her views.”

Unrepresentative my arse. Just let her mask slip.
