Albert Tomkin was born today in 1915. The outside-left was born in Barrow-in-Furness and came to Tottenham in 1937 from Formby.

He had a spell with Northfleet, our nursery club, and returned to the Lane for the 1938-39 season when he played in two games for us.

Former striker Terry Gibson is 47 today. Born in Walthamstow, he went to Highams Park School. He joined Tottenham in 1979 and made his debut shortly after his 17th birthday. He played in 18 games for us, with a loan period at GAIS in Sweden, before transferfing to Coventry City in 1983, where he scored 52 goals in 100 games, a feat which Manchester Utd noticed and they lured him away for the 1986-87 season.

He moved on to Wimbledon the following season and had a brief spell with Peterborough in 1993 and ended his playing career with Barnet in the 1994-95 season, followed by spells of coaching the club's youth players and as assistant manager.

He was also coach of the Northern Ireland team, assisting his former Wimbledon teammate Lawrie Sanchez to victories over England, Spain and Sweden amongst others. Prior to this he had been assistant manager at Wycombe Wanderers, also working alongside Sanchez where together they guided the Wanderers to an FA Cup semi-final in 2001 where they were narrowly defeated 2-1 by Liverpool. During his time at Wycombe, Gibson was responsible for bringing the Comanche club mascot to the club.

He became a coach at Fulham in April 2007 but left the club after the departure of Sanchez in December 2007 and now works as a co-commentator on SKY covering Spanish football. Terry gained extensive experience of Spanish football whilst working as a scout for Bolton and Man City, a role he combined with coaching Northern Ireland when he was based in Southern Spain.

He had heart bypass surgery earlier this year.

Johnny Brooks is 78 today. A creative, skilful inside-forward (I remember seeing him play), he was born in Reading and first played for his local club from 1949 to 1952, when he transferred to Tottenham and played in 166 games, scoring 46 goals, over the following six seasons. Johnny was capped three times for England.

He then moved on to Chelsea for a season followed by spells with Brentford and Crystal Palace until 1964 and he also had a brief spell in the USA in 1968. Now retired, he lived in Boscombe, near Bournemouth.

In the 1956 team photo, he is second from left in the bottom row.

Our promising young goalie Oscar Jansson, now in Sweden's Under-21 squad, is 19 today and recently returned from a three month loan spell with Exeter.

He joined our Academy in 2007, had ten games with our Under-18 team and quickly progressed into the reserves. He was named Goalie of the Tournament in the Dusseldorf Under-19 Tournament in March 2008 after which he began training with our first team squad and he was on the bench for our UEFA Cup game against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Lanky centre-forward Roy Hollis was born today in 1925 in Yarmouth and played for Norwich from 1948 to 1952, making 107 appearances and scoring 59 goals. He scored a hat trick on his debut in under half an hour and scored five against Walsall in 1951.

He transferred to Spurs in 1952 for one season, making three appearances and scoring one goal. I don't know why he stayed for such a short time, but he moved on to Southend where he made 260 appearances and scored 135 goals which is still a record at the club. Blues fans affectionately nicknamed him "Gormless" Hollis as many of his goals went in off any part of his body rather than his feet or head! He even scored a hat trick against his old club, Norwich, at Carrow Road.

He left in 1960 and ended his playing days with Chelmsford and died on 12 November 1998.

He returned to Swindon Town in 1928, where he ended his playing career. I was unable to find a picture of him.

26th, 27th, 28th and 29th December

I'm doing all of these today as they take a bit of research time and my daughter and her partner arrive tomorrow so I'll be very busy entertaining and having some fun.

26 December

Jesse Waller-Lassen is 17 today. The right-winger/ midfielder was born in Crouch End and attended Highgate Wood College.

He was part of our Academy squad which competed in the 2009 Bellinzona tournament and made his Under-18 debut in May 2009.

Left back Herbert Hodgkinson was born today in 1903 in Penistone and played locally for Barnsley from 1923 to 1929 before joining Tottenham for the 1930-31 season and making 56 appearances.

He moved on to Colwyn Bay in Wales and then ended his playing career with Crewe Alexandra in the 1933-34 season. Bert died in 1974.

A mention for Frank Swift, born today in 1913. The Manchester City and England goalie became a journalist when he retired from the game and died in the Munich Air disaster back in 1958 aged only 44.

A legend and a hero of mine.

27 December

Right back Joe Kinnear is 53 today. A talented although often controversial player and manager, he was capped 26 times for the Republic of Ireland and was with Spurs from 1965 to 1975.

He went on to manage several teams, most notably Wimbledon from 1992-99 and Newcastle 2008-09 when he had to give up the position when he needed a heart bypass operation. He's not working at present.

Knew him back in the 60s, didn't like him much as a person although I rated him as a player.

Former defender Mark Stimson is 42 today. Born in Plaistow, his first club experience was with QPR as a schoolboy and he then joined our youth side in 1984. He made only two first team appearances for us and was out on loan a couple of times before transferring to Newcastle in 1989, where he played in 86 games.

He later played for several other clubs before ending his playing career with Grays Athletic, whom he also managed from 2003-06 and he is now managing Gillingham where his son Charlie joined the youth side in 2008.

Inside forward Ernie Newman was born today in 1887 in Birmingham. He played for Walsall and Stockport County before joining Tottenham in 1909. He made 32 appearances for us, scoring seven goals, and retired from the game in 1913. I have no information on when he died.

In this 1911 team photo he is the second player from the left third row down, notably in the same team as the legendary Walter Tull.

A mention for another legend and hero of mine - John Charles CBE who was capped 38 times for Wales and was born today in Swansea in 1931.

Standing at 6'2", this skilled and commanding gentle giant could play equally well at centre-half and centre-forward. He was never sent off, never even cautioned, during his entire career. A true gentleman of the game. His brother Mel and nephew Jeremy also represented Wales.

John also had a minor hit record back in 1960 with his rendition of "Sixteen Tons".

John died on 21 February 2004, aged 72.

28 December

Tom Huddlestone is 23 today. Much improved central defender who has come in for some criticism, but I think he's maturing into something special and hope he'll be with Tottenham for some time to come.

29 December

Central defender Steven Caulker is 18 today. He joined our Academy in 2008, turned professional in July this year and made five reserve appearances, as well as captaining our Under-18 side.

He is currently on loan with Exeter and will remain there until at least May next year.

Midfielder Gerry McMahon is 36 today. Capped 17 times for Northern Ireland, he began his career with Glenavon in 1991 and joined Spurs a season later. He made 16 appearances for us and had loan periods with Barnet and Stoke, joining the latter in 1996 for two seasons.

He then transferred to St Johnstone for another brace of seasons and returned to Glenavon in 2000 where he has so far made 234 appearances. A badly broken leg put him out of the game there from 2002-04.

He enjoyed his time with St Johnstone and last summer the club, who hold him in high esteem, held a testimonial match for him nine years after he left the Saints.

Here he is, playing in a shirt that's at least three sizes too big for him!

Inside-forward Joe Allen was born today in 1909 in Bilsthorpe, Nottinghamshire. He played for his local club Bilsthorpe Colliery before joining Tottenham for his first spell in 1932. In the same year he moved to the Spurs nursery club Northfleet United for a brief loan spell and returned to the Lane where he scored one goal in his solitary match for the club.

In 1933 he signed for Queens Park Rangers where he went on to feature in 51 matches and scored six goals and he then transferred to Mansfield Town and competed in a further eight games, netting five goals. He ended his career the following season with French side team Racing Club de Roubaix. Joe died in 1978.

Defender Ijah Anderson is 34 today. He was a youth player at Tottenham but never made the grade. He made his League debut with Brentford and had loan spells with Wycombe Wanderers and Bristol Rovers before playing for Swansea from 2004-06 where, in 2005, tested positive for taking cocaine and was banned for six-months, although he pleaded his innocence claiming his drink was spiked.

He joined Lewes in August 2006 but was released less than a month later after just four appearances.

Kazuyuki Toda, a man with somewhat scary hair, is 32 today. The Japanese midfielder, capped 20 times, began his career with Shimizu S-Pulse in 1996. Prior to his move to Spurs on loan in 2003 he had accepted a trial at Sunderland but one week into the two week trial he didn't turn up for training with Sunderland and instead agreed a deal to move to Tottenham and made four first team appearances.

He was only with us for a brief spell before joining ADO Den Haag in 2004 and then returned to Japan to play for Tokyo Verdy in 2005 with spells at other Japanese and Korean clubs later. He is now with Japanese club Thespa Kusatsu.

A mention for the fantastic former England (73 caps) and Leicester City (for most of his career from 1959 to 1967 with 293 appearances) goalie Gordon Banks OBE, who is 72 today.

Inside left (who also occasionally played at centre half) Albert John "Jack" Elkes was born today in 1898 in Shropshire. He joined Stalybridge Celtic in 1914, moved to Birmingham in 1918 and Southampton in 1922 before joining Spurs in 1923. The six-footer was described in the press as "a tall man, who was a clever player".

He made 200 appearances, scoring 50 goals in his six seasons with us and was selected for the FA tour of Australia in 1925, playing three times for the Football League side.

He played for Middlesbrough from 1929 to 1933, Watford 1933-34 and ended his playing career with Oakengates Town (where he was born) from 1935 to 1937. When he retired from playing, he coached the Ford Motor Works team in Dagenham.

Jack died in Rayleigh, Essex on 22 January 1972 aged 77.

Scottish-American winger Jim Brown was born today in 1908 in Kilmarnock. He played for the USA at the 1930 FIFA World Cup and scored the only goal for them in their 6-1 semi-final loss to Argentine. He began his career in the American Soccer League, mainly for New York-based sides before joining Manchester Utd in 1932

He transferred to Brentford for the 1935-36 season and then joined Tottenham for two seasons. He made only four first team appearances but scored 21 goals for our reserves in 30 games. He then moved on to Guildford City for a further two seasons, played briefly for Clyde in Glasgow and ended his playing career with Greenport Utd in the USA from 1950-52, after which he became a renowned soccer coach for a handful of American schools.

He was inducted in the American National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1986 and his son George was also inducted in 1995. Jim died in New Jersey on 9 November 1994, aged 85.

Jamie Slabber is 25 today. Born in Enfield, the striker began his career at the Lane as a trainee in 2001. As a professional between 2002 and 2005 he made only one first team appearance, as a sub, playing mainly as a reserve. He was capped at Under-18 and Under19 levels for England.

He moved to Swindon and later Aldershot and first played for Grays Athletic from 2005-07, with spells at Oxford Utd, Stevenage, Havant & Waterlooville before returning to Grays in 2008.

Ajet Shehu is 19 today. The 6'2" defender was born in Kosovo and moved to West London aged 11. He joined Barnet's youth programme and came to Tottenham in 2006, playing in our youth and reserve sides for three seasons.

He was released this summer and is now with Cheltenham on a non-contract basis.

This has been going for a few years now so I'm not doing a 2010 version.

I hope some of you will look back at the stories and photos already here. Perhaps it could be "stickied" so it doesn't disappear into the old pages?

I will respond to individual requests if you want me to do one for you or yours.
