If only he'd stuck to FA cup finals - 'The Crazy Gang have beaten The Culture Club' was a really clever bit of commentary.

But give me Barry Davies every day of the week: I still have an old 1982 VHS recording of him, up in my loft somewhere, comparing Garth Crooks to Pele, after Crooksie had scored a bullet header against Wolves on the day we opened the West Stand - all done with tongue firmly placed in cheek, but equally clever all the same.

Respect Motty's overall career, but he should have packed up some time ago, his commentaries have been all over the shop for at least the last 5 years or so.

Hope he has a well earned retirement and he'll be remembered fondly.

Yeah, Barry Davies was the master. Motty is an absolute legend in the game but I agree with @scat1620, Motty's commentary has been quite dreadful in the last few years, lots of "oh...it's a goal.....(insert player name)" and lots of incoherent descriptions in the build up to goals - a shame really as he used to be one of the best, although I don't blame him for wanting to continue doing what he enjoys.

I'd much rather it be Alan Green hanging up though!

Motson is / was good. I preferred Barry Davies too. Am I right in thinking he always wanted to do the cup final, but the Beeb always gave it to Motty?

Alan "you mean Liverpool aren't the only team in this league?" Green.

Davies did the FA Cup Finals in 1995 & '96, WC Final in 1994, EC Finals of 1977, '79, '81 and '84, ECWC Final 1998, UEFA Cup Final 2001 & Lge Cup Finals in 1981, '85 & '87'.

Over the years Motty certainly did a lot more finals and higher profile games, however once the footy season was over Barry Davies then did Wimbledon, the Olympic Games ( summer and winter ) and the Boat Race. A real 'Jack of all trades' really, and pretty good at all of them.

When it came to football, I guess you could say Barry Davies was 'hindered' (?) by his abilities as a multi-sport commentator. John Motson was very much a one sport commentator.

Thought he was Barnet?

Not sure, I remember reading something once about him being Spurs and thinking "Interesting, I didn't know that" but obviously I don't know whether the article was nonsense. Could well be that he's Barnet.

I think wiki says Barnet and that's where he got his first football reporting role.

Edit: not quite but umm ye...

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Motson

Yeah sounds from the article that's linked in the Wiki that he got his first gig there and has been following them ever since, tries to get to games when he can etc. Doesn't sound like he grew up supporting them though. I guess we'll never know. Like I say, I dunno where I got it from that he was Spurs but I definitely read it somewhere.

Is he actually retiring or just switching to someone like BT or Sky?
