With the hype of the returns of Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe, the arrival of Wilson Palacios was if not unheralded, but overshadowed..
As with the other signings the £12 million signing from Wigan was one to divide the fans, for perhaps different reasons, but doubts were certainly raised about his ability and certainly his price tag.
Watching him against Bolton last week I saw a real mixed bag to his performance. At times he looked a little lost and out of tune with his team mates, hardly surprising when the other ten also looked equally out of tune with each other. At least the Honduran had an excuse..
Sunday was of course a big stage for the boy. His home debut in a North London derby against the man who introduced him to Steve Bruce and ultimately to the English game.
Watching Palacios for Wigan this season, he has looked a class above, controlling the games and looking every inch a top player. However, this is something we have all seen in players of the past. Great for their clubs and signed by Tottenham in a fanfare, only to fail as yet another superstar in the making flatters to deceive...
At the risk of overhyping a player myself, I thought he had a truly excellent game Sunday. Arsenal may not have had the superb Cesc Fabrigas facing out new man, but in Song and Denilson, they have two very good football players, but two who were brushed aside by the new boy on the day.
In my match preview, I stated that I wanted to see Palacios alongside either Jenas, Modric or perhaps both with Luka on the left. This was a three to excite me. I thought both played their part in our performance, with Modric, perhaps even edging the man of the match award for me, but either way it was a very close call and I wouldn't argue against those voting for Wilson.
Talk has always been about our need for a specialist defensive midfielder, but this doesn`t apply in a 4-4-2. It has almost become an obsession in English football, but is only really needed in a three man midfield. Clearly you need one or both to be able to put a foot in and sit if required, but in reality you need two players who can do everything. Great engine, Box to box, run with the ball, tackle and get a few goals.
The latter has been where his games has lacked. he has a very poor scoring percentage, he has never scored in English football, but judging by his efforts Sunday, it certainly isn`t down to lack of effort or ability. Also if you cast your minds back to our FA cup third round against Wigan, you may remember his overhead volley from the edge of our box, which was technically perfect and also very, very close to being a great goal..
Comparing him to a legend like Roy Keane was done slightly tongue in cheek, but watching yesterdays game, fans will see my point. Palacios may never come near to Keane's achievements or quality, but he offers the same style of play and qualities to a team, not yet the world-class player, but give him time...
It will be interesting to see how he progresses over the coming games and also who he plays alongside. It would seem sensible to me to look at either Jenas or Modric or perhaps in the short term both, with the absence of a natural left winger, something he also lacked at Wigan.
I would suggest that although this article may be premature and he may yet join the huge pile of those who flatter to deceive, initial viewings are very positive, since the departure of Davids, we have lacked a player who can mix the ugly with sublime and he looks the perfect buy to give us bite and balance. Another case of well done Mr Redknapp, a very good piece of business, I hope....
I have to agree with the author of the article I thought Wilson was immense for us. Lets hope he can keep it up
