With the hype of the returns of Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe, the arrival of Wilson Palacios was if not unheralded, but overshadowed..

As with the other signings the £12 million signing from Wigan was one to divide the fans, for perhaps different reasons, but doubts were certainly raised about his ability and certainly his price tag.

Watching him against Bolton last week I saw a real mixed bag to his performance. At times he looked a little lost and out of tune with his team mates, hardly surprising when the other ten also looked equally out of tune with each other. At least the Honduran had an excuse..

Sunday was of course a big stage for the boy. His home debut in a North London derby against the man who introduced him to Steve Bruce and ultimately to the English game.

Watching Palacios for Wigan this season, he has looked a class above, controlling the games and looking every inch a top player. However, this is something we have all seen in players of the past. Great for their clubs and signed by Tottenham in a fanfare, only to fail as yet another superstar in the making flatters to deceive...

At the risk of overhyping a player myself, I thought he had a truly excellent game Sunday. Arsenal may not have had the superb Cesc Fabrigas facing out new man, but in Song and Denilson, they have two very good football players, but two who were brushed aside by the new boy on the day.

In my match preview, I stated that I wanted to see Palacios alongside either Jenas, Modric or perhaps both with Luka on the left. This was a three to excite me. I thought both played their part in our performance, with Modric, perhaps even edging the man of the match award for me, but either way it was a very close call and I wouldn't argue against those voting for Wilson.

Talk has always been about our need for a specialist defensive midfielder, but this doesn`t apply in a 4-4-2. It has almost become an obsession in English football, but is only really needed in a three man midfield. Clearly you need one or both to be able to put a foot in and sit if required, but in reality you need two players who can do everything. Great engine, Box to box, run with the ball, tackle and get a few goals.

The latter has been where his games has lacked. he has a very poor scoring percentage, he has never scored in English football, but judging by his efforts Sunday, it certainly isn`t down to lack of effort or ability. Also if you cast your minds back to our FA cup third round against Wigan, you may remember his overhead volley from the edge of our box, which was technically perfect and also very, very close to being a great goal..

Comparing him to a legend like Roy Keane was done slightly tongue in cheek, but watching yesterdays game, fans will see my point. Palacios may never come near to Keane's achievements or quality, but he offers the same style of play and qualities to a team, not yet the world-class player, but give him time...

It will be interesting to see how he progresses over the coming games and also who he plays alongside. It would seem sensible to me to look at either Jenas or Modric or perhaps in the short term both, with the absence of a natural left winger, something he also lacked at Wigan.

I would suggest that although this article may be premature and he may yet join the huge pile of those who flatter to deceive, initial viewings are very positive, since the departure of Davids, we have lacked a player who can mix the ugly with sublime and he looks the perfect buy to give us bite and balance. Another case of well done Mr Redknapp, a very good piece of business, I hope....

I have to agree with the author of the article I thought Wilson was immense for us. Lets hope he can keep it up

For the first time this season, I actually trusted our midfield from a defensive point of view. Zokora has done really well and Im glad he's improved and it's good he provides capable depth. But Palacios knows where his position is and what his job is. He won the vast majority of that midfield battle........and he can clearly hit a ball too!

I thought the same about his performance at Bolton but there was enough there to give some hope. Against Arsenal he certainly played very well.
His failure to score ,or assist, at Wigan, his relative inexperience made me doubtful that he was the saviour we have been praying for.
I'm not one for saviours in any case as it puts too much pressure on the shoulders of new players to Tottenham. I prefer the team to play well together and to incorporate the individual skills in the overall scheme.
This is one of the reasons that Jenas is so underated by many.He performs a vital role in the team, mainly fetching and carrying, linking, being available, and laying off the ball quickly. Occasionally he produces something outstanding but that is not what he is there for.
Palacios seems very self contained and workmanlike. He does what is necessary without fuss and could be just what we need. He might release Jenas to a certain extent from defensive duties and enable him to link up with Modric.
But lets not get on his back too quickly like we have with Modric and Pavlyuchenko. Its not their fault that we are in dire straights.

I thought Palacios was excellent on Sunday. He's a class above Zokora (tackles without giving away free kicks, can run with the ball without ending up in a deadend and can shoot). Also seemed to work well with Jenas and be really confident on the ball.

Not so convinced about Modric on the left but what options have we got?

Typical overhype that goes with a new spurs signing. Roy Keane? A long way to go for those comparisons.....

Have a lot of hope for him but won't go shouting about it after 2 performances that were, admittedly, very good. He's a good age and has a good manager, hopefully the spurs 'rot' won't set in and he will maintain his progression. Lets hope himself and Keane can inspire the rest of the squad to push on (and not the other way around).

The reason it worked is that he interchanged with Keane if need be, roaming into central positions and making our central midfield a three-man one with only Pav upfront. It's good as it means defenders don't know who they need to be marking.

Luka on the left can work, provided he has Keane in front of him in attack. It simply wouldn't work with Bent.

Let's not get carried away. A good game on Sunday yes, but we need to see him for the rest of the season before we make any judgment

    Midfield of Lennon/GDS - Modric/Ohara - Palacios/Zokora - Bentley/Jenas

Did you actually read the article and not just the headline? The author stated it was a tongue-in-cheek comparison to Keane and that only time will tell if Palacios is able to develop into a world class player.

i love him, i said to all those who doubted he's exactly what we need and his performance against arsenal showed that. obviously he needs to do that consistently but i feel he will. with more of a physical presence in the centre of the park, players like modric and bentley will really have a chance to shine. i'm so happy we signed him because he completely dominated the midfield on sunday, he let no-one get past him all game. he looks really hungry and like a real leader in midfield aswell.

lets not get carried away, but on sunday wilson was a beast in the DM role. and if he can produce that consistently home and away, then what a player we will have
  15. SorrellSpurs
He looked class but they were playing with an extra man in midfield so lets reserve jugement
  16. Bonjour
We looked better before they had a man sent off..
