Tottenham want Frenkie De Jong transfer if Christian Eriksen joins Real Madrid

EXCLUSIVE: Spurs tell Ajax they are ready to match highest bid for De Jong using huge fee Eriksen would bring in

Tottenham have entered the race to sign Ajax’s brilliant youngster Frenkie De Jong — as Real Madrid prepare to launch a £100million bid for his fellow midfielder Christian Eriksen.

...

But Madrid have made Eriksen a top summer target as they look to revamp an ageing squad, and Spurs have responded by contacting De Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, and giving him guarantees that will match the current highest bid for his client.

...

While Barcelona and Italian champions Juventus are also big admirers of the Dutch international, Barca are currently unwilling to match the financial offer being made by PSG and De Jong ruled out Juve because he believes a move to England, Spain or France will suit him best.

Spurs are long-term admirers of the player and have been tracking his progress for the past 18 months.

...

De Jong looked to be out of their range when City and PSG entered the race for his signature, but chairman Daniel Levy has developed a strong working relationship with Ajax director of football Mark Overmars and knows the kind of financial commitment he will have to make.

The belief in Amsterdam is that PSG remain favourites to land De Jong at the end of the season, but until and agreement with Ajax and De Jong is sealed the player remains on the market.

It is clear that if Eriksen follows in the footsteps of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric, then Spurs will spend what it takes to get a world-class replacement.

Whilst I'm thinking that de Jong would be highly unlikely, if the article is to be believed, then we should have no trouble finding cash for N'dombele or another expensive type if we are to reinvest.

Personally I'd just want Eriksen to stay.

I’m sure once an attainable, good enough player who wants to play for us is on the horizon that cash won’t be available

Another one who doesn't think we're a big enough team for him.
Bale, Modric, Eriksen. Well-worn and proven path. I'm happy to have him for a couple of seasons, use us as a stepping-stone. Just needs to be marketed to him in the right way.

De Jong or Ndombele are meant to be the Dembele replacement not the Eriksen replacement lmfao.

Rarely happens that way though, Look at when Liv sold Coutinho, they changed from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3, When we sold Bale we didn't replace like for like. I feel like Dembele and Eriksen are dam near irreplaceable and so it stands to reason we would try and sign players which will reshape us. If we sign De Jong we could switch to 4-3-3 or even 4-1-4-1

Exactly, not sure if we are hoping that Eriksen’s fee should he leave cover De Jong/Ndombele and someone of Isco’s ability as well.

Chances are we won’t get any of these players.

Sad as it is, the optimism I had last summer has been replaced by my view that we have limited/no cash, and that this (and the consequent inability to therefore improve the squad and challenge for honours) is common knowledge amongst agents (who by the way, we also don’t play the game with) and players.

Likelihood is we’ll lose Dembele, Toby and Eriksen (all Tier 1 players at their best) and the replacements, given the above, will be likely to be from two groups:
- Tier 2 development players: ie under 22 or so, but not the Ndombele’s of the world, the tier below
- Tier 2 or 3 established players: because we can’t afford the best and the limited sell on value makes us hesitate for even some pretty good, obtainable players

That’s not progression, and you can put it down to a lack of ambition or a stadium cost over run or whatever you like, but it’s far from ideal

I understand the financial logic, but if correct, it can’t be that appealing to the manager or our best players

Report says we'll match any bid made for player in question - information passed on before said report, player in question has turned us down in favour of waiting for super club of his choice to come calling, not sure Spurs can do much about that.

Just as an aside both Toby and Eriksen have rejected contract(s) ... One would have made one of them one of the highest paid center backs in the prem league at the time ... The other seems to want to go to a bigger club than Spurs, nothing to do with wages, just seems a career choice.

I wish fans would stop muddying situations up with ill pre-conceived ideas that have dogged this team for years. We're now stuck between a rock and a hard place it seems. More to do with convincing targets to move to Spurs over bigger teams, that and their agents ... Who would have thunk it?

You’ve not read my post properly

It’s not that we’re unprepared to shell out for someone like De Jong, but if that individual believes we can’t invest beyond that, and therefore won’t progress as a squad, why would they come?

I’m not criticising the club as such, but it’s a reality of the situation we’re in. We’ve built an absolutely incredible stadium, but it’ll limit what we can do elsewhere for some time

What are you expecting then beyond De Jong and perhaps another? What would anyone be expecting? De Jong and the numbers being quoted cash wise would dwarf Spurs previous outlay on a footballer.

Unless we get new finance from somewhere. Whether that is naming rights, investment or new owners. Spurs are meant to be looking at a bondmissue aswell. We'll see.

I think you’re missing the point completely, he’s not talking from his point of view but the players point of view. why sign for us if after we make one big signing then ease back off when you can sign for a club like PSG or Barca who’ll keep on investing

I didn’t ask a question and you’ve completely lost me, I have no idea what point you’re trying to make, you’ve read a post wrong and then gone off somewhere completely different to what was being said

We're not on their level. He rejected us, we've been told that.

Who else do you think we're going to be bringing in after forking out in excess of £50 mill plus for him alone?
