Maybe it's not a matter of thinking Ndombele isn't good enough, it's just that we think that De Jong is worth the 80M it would cost to get him but Ndombele isn't (maybe we value him closer to 45-50M)?

In the end though, it's not what we value him at that matters. The selling club have a price at which they will sell and if we don't meet that, they simply don't sell. If we value Eriksen at £225m and no-one will pay it, same situation. Although I appreciate with his contract running down it's slightly different.

Totally understand that, but from the sounds of it they're being valued pretty much equally (even if it is Lyon just trying to drive up the price). In that scenario (where De Jong is 80M and Ndombele is 75M) we may just not think Ndombele is worth thus not willing to spend it on him, that but De Jong is so we are.

If, as is being implied, we're waiting to see if we can get De Jong before pursuing any other targets, what's the timeline on this? I've not seen any indication that De Jong is available before the summer, which would then mean we're not looking to bring in any central midfielders in January. That in itself seems risky, given our current situation, but surely we can't just sit around waiting indefinitely for this guy. We must have internally set a deadline on it.

We’re gonna wait juuuust long enough for De Jong to go elsewhere, to miss out on backup targets like Ndombele. Then we’ll end up getting a Max Meyer type from Germany, but not as good.

Saw on reddit that Mundo Deportive are reporting that De Jong will make his decision by the end of the week and that Ajax want to make a formal announcement (although he won't be leaving until the summer).

The more I think about it, the more I think that our interest in this transfer -- other than our willingness to spend what it would take should every single club that De Jong would prefer drop their pursuit, which seems extraordinarily unlikely -- has to do with Rabiot rather than De Jong.

Barca fans seem to think that they will get one or the other, but not both. I can see a plausible scenario in which we are waiting to see whether De Jong might choose Barca, which would then lead them to drop their interest in Rabiot, enabling us to scoop him up. Alternatively, if De Jong chooses PSG, that would trigger Barca to conclude the Rabiot deal, resolving the uncertainty and enabling us to move onto other targets (assuming we have any interest in spending at all, which I doubt).

I can't see any other reason why this transfer would be at all relevant to our transfer plans, because as keen as we are on the player there's been absolutely no indication whatsoever from any of the media outlets who have been following the story closely that we are even in contention.

If the reports are correct, I really can't understand why a young player would join PSG over Barcelona. I mean, yes there's the money aspect, but I can't imagine Barca were offering peanuts in the wage department. I suspect it's probably more the agent fees and the agent pushing him to join PSG. If that's the case, we never stood a chance.

Or playing with Mbappe and Neymar.
heavy rumors that Neymar wont be around much longer. I think PSG have actually proven to play young players and improve them while competing deep into Champions League - could be part of the appeal.

Possibly. I can see us doing this. If this indeed is the scenario then we need to change our tact because this 'waiting for things to fall in our favour' rarely works and is causing us lots of issues. Liverpool didn't wait for things to fall their way, they turned up with a solid offer and moved quickly.

I understand our restrictions but we won't progress if we continue to just wait for opportunistic signings as opposed to actually being proactive.

Could be something as simple as it's easier to go and see his family and friends in Holland, plus money, plus playing with Neymar and M'bappe...you could argue less pressure at PSG too. Possibly a guarantee of more playing time, Barca's signings often end up with splinters in their arses.

Tier 1 for Barca news... De Jong off to PSG, assuming Rabiot off to Barca. Tottenham finally moves on from De Jong and will move on to other targets?
