I do find it strange that he would go to PSG, but I guess money talks and he will have a guaranteed spot. We are not on the same level as them and may never be financially speaking.

Agreed. From the interviews I’ve read, he seemed to be the kind of player who put football before everything else. I’d be surprised if he ended up at PSG

Yeah he seems pretty down to earth, as most Ajax youth prospects do, but I guess one can never discount agent power.

We're doing PSG a disservice here acting like it's such a weird move. Tuchel is a great coach, and he'd get to play with Neymar and Mbappe whilst probably being given a role of responsibility within the team. I can see the appeal of the move for footballing reasons.

How the hell are PSG meeting their FFP requirements? Neymar, mbappe and now de Jong. Seriously wtf. That after overstating their sponsorship payments like citeh

Fuck you UEFA

While Barcelona and Italian champions Juventus are also big admirers of the Dutch international, Barca are currently unwilling to match the financial offer being made by PSG and De Jong ruled out Juve because he believes a move to England, Spain or France will suit him best.
This from the OP now seems pretty telling.

Hopefully they change their mind and go a different way.

Would love us to go full Liverpool on this one and pay over the top (fee, wages, agents fees) . JJ has suggested in the past we think he's worth it (it being doubling our transfer record). This kid is the real deal and is just what we need in CM.

Not saying I expect it at all, I'd just bloody love it.

My hope is that he doesn't move in Jan (unless to us) and we can open our stadium which gets his juices flowing.

I love that we're balls out for this kid but it does feel like one of those that if he was going to come to us it would have happened by now, probably back in the summer.

Ajax have qualified for the next round of the CL for the first time in ages, there is no chance ether De Jong or De Ligt leave this window.

Fingers crossed, if we have a great run in the Champions League maybe we can turn both the players you mentioned heads. Honestly I'm getting a bit carried away but signing players of that calibre when the likes of Barca/PSG are calling could be a watershed moment.

I wish I had your optimism. I think one of the reasons we haven't signed a cm yet is because we are still desperate for Jong. But I just don't see it happening considering who else want him.

I think your outlook is 100% what will happen but I'm still holding some lingering hope.

NOT happening. We won't spend anything like what it would take.
I don't think its the money that will be the issue. Everything JJ said originally points to the player and the bigger clubs interest. He looks exactly the type of player Levy would go for with massive sell on potential and at the right age. If we paid £40+ for a CB we will no doubt do it for a CM.

I think total spend is the only issue and I can't currently see us breaking our transfer record for anyone.

This is what I believe the club's stance is, but the problem is that - Sanchez aside - there's not been a lot of recent evidence of us being able to complete the deals now that even players with potential are commanding fees in excess of £50m.

I always come back to a comment Levy made 2 summers ago, when there was some Q&A with him and Poch where he said something along the lines of 'there hasn't been a player we've actively been in the market for who we couldn't afford'.

This suggested to me that we were targeting the right players (who would command fees & wages that we could afford) but the job of convincing them to join Spurs instead of waiting for a bigger/richer club was a challenge.

This ties in with what @JJetset says about De Jong, but I just wonder whether money is now also an issue given how sharply fees and wages have jumped in the space of 2 years, even for prospects.

Be interesting to get an ITK on that.

Funny thing is, I think we would actually spend the money needed. Only reason I say that is buying talent from Ajax is pretty much as close to a sure thing as you can get for us. We have an exceptional track record of bringing their players to us and them proving their worth several times over. They also seem to settle with us very quickly and effortlessly. I think for Levy, even at 60 or 70 mil, in this market and considering his potential, we could turn him into a 100+ mil player without much effort at all.

I don't think we will get De Jong because he will have better offers from bigger clubs not due to our financial restraints. At least, not the original outlay, contract might be another issue if PSG were to offer three times what we would. Barca however don't have the funds to give any more players crazy contracts.

I agree.

We can buy this guy and I think Levy would support it - it’s likely to be a very good investment - but we are team that (1) are less able to invest on top of that sort of signing (2) have less pedigree of winning trophies and (3) pay less, than others who seem to be interested.

Would be great but I think we’ll get blown away

I honestly don't think that "special relationship" with Ajax is quite as special as it used to be. I don't think we were prepared to pay for De Ligt and it'll go the same way for De Jong. I see all sorts of excuses being made for our lack of transfer business but the bottom line in my opinion is money. We just won't spend what it takes in the current market.

I don't really understand why if we're "willing to match any other offers" that come in for him, we haven't made the first bid ourselves and just put our cards on the table. If he says no at that point or if we're not prepared to pay the asking price then just walk away.

It certainly doesn't make sense to just wait around to see if he decides he'll maybe think about joining us if other options don't materialise, when we actually have a position to fill.

EDIT: And just to be clear, I know it's definitely not as simple as the above!
