BBC Live Text
21:39 GOAL - Fulham 1-2 Tottenham - Lewis Holtby (82 mins)
Another one to catch on Match of the Day at 2230GMT as Lewis Holtby smashes home from the edge of the box. That's a big goal in Tottenham's season - and what a fightback by Spurs.
Substitution, Tottenham Hotspur. Andros Townsend replaces Erik Lamela.
21:30 GOAL - Fulham 1-1 Tottenham - Vlad Chiriches (73 mins)
Tottenham looked as though they were struggling to break their hosts down until Vlad Chiriches's low strike from 25 yards flew into the bottom corner after Fulham had cleared a corner.
Substitution, Tottenham Hotspur. Nacer Chadli replaces Sandro.
21:14 GOAL - Fulham 1-0 Tottenham - Ashkan Dejagah (57 mins)
What an important goal this could be for Fulham. Dimitar Berbatov's pass sets Ashkan Dejagah through on goal and the Iranian winger rifles an angled drive past Hugo Lloris. Penny for AVB's thoughts.
45:00 Substitution Substitution, Tottenham Hotspur. Lewis Holtby replaces Etienne Capoue.
Half Time Fulham 0, Tottenham Hotspur 0
12:13 Booking Etienne Capoue (Tottenham Hotspur) is shown the yellow card for a bad foul.

In the wake of Martin Jol's dismissal, the rebuilding work at Fulham begins in earnest with a derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Cottagers took the decision to relieve Jol of his managerial duties on Sunday, with the Dutchman paying the price for a sorry run of five straight defeats.

Rene Meulensteen - a man brought in to work as head coach just three weeks ago - has been promoted to the top post, with many of the opinion that his appointment at Craven Cottage was the beginning of the end of Jol.

There is, however, a job to be done on the banks of the Thames, with Fulham's inability to bring the best out of a talented but badly underperforming squad leaving them languishing inside the drop zone.

A meeting with a local rival would not normally be considered an ideal starter for a new boss, but Spurs have issues of their own to address at present.

Andre Villas-Boas saw his side put in a much-improved display during a 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Sunday, and vented his anger afterwards at unsettling reports regarding his future.

He does not appear to be in immediate danger of heading the same way as Jol, but a run of four games without a win has left Spurs in ninth place - 10 points adrift of league leaders and arch enemies Arsenal.

Any hopes they held of challenging for the title may be starting to fade, but the top four and a return to the UEFA Champions League is still there to be shot at for an expensively-assembled outfit.

Tottenham

Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor is still struggling with a groin problem and is therefore a major doubt for the London derby.

Midfielder Christian Eriksen (ankle), defender Danny Rose (toe) and striker Harry Kane (back) are all out.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas has to decide whether to keep faith with floundering forward Roberto Soldado, or recall Jermain Defoe.

Fulham
Fulham right-back Sascha Riether will return from a three-match suspension for new manager Rene Meulensteen's first game in charge.

Forward Moussa Dembele will be assessed after picking up a minor hamstring problem in the 3-0 defeat at West Ham.

Defender Brede Hangeland could be back after a sciatic nerve problem, while striker Dimitar Berbatov is also expected to be fit following illness. Striker Hugo Rodallega (groin) and defender Matthew Briggs continue their rehabilitation.

Rene Meulensteen will select the Fulham team for the first time after taking over as manager from Martin Jol, who was sacked on Sunday.

Dimitar Berbatov should return after illness while Brede Hangeland could be back after a sciatic nerve problem.

Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor is still struggling with a groin problem so is doubtful.

Midfielder Christian Eriksen (ankle), defender Danny Rose (toe) and striker Harry Kane (back) are all out.

The sacking of Martin Jol was inevitable. The pictures we saw of him on Match of the Day on Saturday - and certainly his post-match interview - betrayed the fact that he knew it was imminent.

Fulham's statistics made it impossible for him to survive. Five defeats in a row means they're three points adrift of safety in the relegation zone.

But that's only part of the story. Many Fulham fans saw this coming and trace the malaise back to last season. In fact, since 1 April, Fulham have lost 15 of their 21 Premier League games.

To many, the balance of the team looks wrong. Does it contain too many mavericks? Berbatov, Taarabt, Kasami and Ruiz can all be brilliant on their day but most managers would fret about having one of them in their team, let alone four. Especially if that team is struggling and is short of confidence.

It will be fascinating to see whether Rene Meulensteen can mix a knock-out cocktail, or whether he opts for a more conservative brew.

Had Tottenham been beaten by Manchester United on Sunday, we might have been reading about the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas.

Since the 6-0 pasting at Manchester City, the pressure on the Portuguese seems to have been mounting daily, and yet Spurs are only three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.

Unfortunately for AVB, that pressure comes with the territory. Especially when over £100m has been spent on new talent over the summer, and precious few of those new faces have made any kind of impact.

Only two clubs have scored fewer goals than Spurs this season, and Roberto Soldado personifies that problem. Three of his four Premier League goals have come from the penalty spot. He looks like a pale imitation of the man who netted 30 times for Valencia last season, and at the moment a waste of money at £25m.

With a trip to Sunderland on Saturday, the opportunity is there for Villas-Boas to answer his critics by putting big points on the board.

Failure to do so could still see him head the same way as Martin Jol before Christmas.

facts.jpg

Head-to-head

  • Tottenham have won on their last three league visits to Craven Cottage.
  • However, Fulham won the most recent match between the sides, 1-0 at White Hart Lane in March. Former Tottenham forward Dimitar Berbatov scored the only goal.
Fulham

  • Fulham have lost five league games in a row.
  • They are yet to score more than one goal in any league game at Craven Cottage this season. They didn't manage a single shot on target against West Ham at the weekend.
  • It's Fulham's joint-worst start in the top flight. They had an identical record after 13 matches in 1967-68 (W3, D1, L9). That season, they finished bottom of the old Division One that season - it was their most recent top-flight relegation.
Tottenham

  • Tottenham are without a win in four league matches (D2, L2). They have scored just two goals in those four matches, both of which came against Man Utd in the draw on Sunday.
  • Like Fulham, Spurs have scored just 11 goals in this season's Premier League. Only two teams (Sunderland and Crystal Palace) have scored fewer.
  • Tottenham are one of only three clubs (along with Arsenal and Man Utd) to have reached double figures in away points won this season. Spurs have won three of their six league games away from White Hart Lane. However, their last away game saw them thumped 6-0 by Man City.

Andre Villas-Boas reports that Emmanuel Adebayor is out of tomorrow's Premier League clash at Fulham.

The striker is sidelined with a knee injury.

“We’ve had a setback with Ade who picked up a knee injury in yesterday’s training session,” explained Andre after training on Tuesday. “He’s the only player who will join the injury list.”

That injury list consists of Danny Rose (foot), Christian Eriksen (ankle) and Harry Kane (back).

We'll have Andre's views on the game on tottenhamhotspur.com tomorrow.

Kick-off at Craven Cottage is 8pm.

I liked the look of the midfield trio of Sandro Dembele and Paulinho. First time this season all 3 have looked really good and the key could be playing all three instead of 2 out of 3.
Paulinho as an advance Centre mid looked better than Eriksen or Holtby have this season. Dembele seemed happy being a link between Sandro and Paulinho.
I'm still unsure of the wings and centre forward but if like to see that trio given a few games.

Very interesting game this.

I'm not sure what happens if we lose. AVB needs a win in a big way otherwise, rightly or wrongly (I personally think wrongly) he will head that list of people likely to follow BMJ out of a job.

Let's hope the boys keep up some of the better aspects of Sunday's performance.

COYS!!!

We havn't won in four now, we definitely need to win one of the next two, that's all I know - and preferably both, obviously.

Really is such a massive game. Fulham will no doubt be putting in a big effort, but this is a game we have to win tomorrow night. I hope we hit them hard right from the off and not move it slowly which will play into their hands and could increase their confidence.

Praying Soldado can find his touch and get motoring.

It's a huge game. We should win, be if we lose, all of sundays good work will have gone to waste, and after his outburst on Ashton and Samuel, it will be open season on AVB with the press.

Pretty much mate. For me these next two games could be the most important of the season. Not because who we're playing as such, but the timing and circumstances we find ourselves in at present. Win them and we can get some momentum going and we should be more confident, which would be the perfect tonic for the Liverpool game - win that, and we're back in the top 4 in all likelihood with a psychological advantage over one of our rivals.

For me this little period coming up is huge and could be very defining. Fail to win both of the next two, the pressure will be insane and then the Liverpool game arrives with pressure that could be all too much.

Its time to step it up now. November was a bad month for us last year but we bounced back. The Newcastle game was exceptionally frustrating, but the one good thing is we've got City and Everton away out of the way, which are extremely difficult games - and one less against United as well.

Its amazing that we're only three points off fourth after such a poor run in terms of points, but that won't last if we don't start winning very soon.

Exactly, it really is shit or bust time now, in terms of what we achieve in the PL this season and more importantly the immediate and long term future of AVB.

Sunday gave me huge hope going forward, it is what I have wanted all season, I just hope that he sticks to that same format and we can push on, becasue playing like that we are only going to get better.

Very tough place to go for us at such a shaky time. Sadly I'm not seeing 3 points for us.

But still COYS!

I think AVB needs to start getting to grips with who we can set out to dominate in Midfield and who we should chuck the kitchen sink at, Fulham and Sunderland are teams we should chuck the kitchen sink at from the off, Liverpool, look to dominate possession and frustrate them and make them make mistakes.
