They say they got inspiration from westminster abbey? Yes by taking the worst aspects, ignoring the good and then building a football stadium with them.

It's different enough that in 10 years time people will call it iconic but i think it's ugly and would prefer to be surrounded by beauty rather than iconic.

looks like a giant hut.

Congratulations. Chelsea have already won the Carbuncle award for whichever year that monstrosity is finished.

I think Chelsea's stadium is horrendous. Original, but just abhorrent. Their assumption that mess will just glide through planning and that they'll be building within 2 years just seems nutty to me. Zero reference to the immediate surroundings, unnecessarily tall and using that much brick will be expensive and slow. Herzog & de Muron are capable of so much better. I suspect the vrief was to build something different to any other stadium visually, at least 60k and which is iconic, referencing local history (as the club has none). They met the brief, that's the only positive you can say about it.

Looks like Chelsea want to recreate The Shed look! and West Ham looking to bring back the Chicken Run on the side. Shame we couldn't incorporate a Shelf area in ours

The height is necessary in order to squeeze 60000 onto a site that's really too small.

The strange shape is to minimise it's impact on the surrounding dwellings.

They will get it through but not without serious s106 costs. Unlike Haringey, Fulham council do not need Chelsea there.

Those Chelsea stadium pics look a fucking disaster. I very much doubt it ends looking like that in the final say. A complete mess.

So basically ours looks stupendous, Citys is shaping up nicely, Liverpools was always ging to turn out well as its a redevelopment of an existing 'proper' football ground and that Chelsea's and West Hams looks dire. Sweet!

Good lord that's bad, no wonder they originally released highly stylised, obscure renders. The massing of the roof is particularly horrendous, from the sharp lines of the brick piers and external elevations, to a random oval apex ring at the roof opening, what are they thinking?

Abramovich seems to want to create his own piece of Soviet Brutalism in London, and sadly he probably has enough money to pull it off.

It's not that part which I think is ridiculous, the real height of the stadium is around the edge, the high ridge above the centre of the stands is stylistic to do with those strange columns and you can see this as there is a gap and then a flat(ish) roof below it.

I appreciate the reason for the strange shape/footprint, don't begrudge that as we'd do the same if we had to, but It's the external styling in general which I just think is unforgivably disgusting. If that was built as a government/public building (prison, hospital, offices, whatever), it would get absolutely pilloried for being so ridiculous. For the money that will cost to build they should have something insanely beautiful.
Something insanely beautiful would hardly be in keeping with the ugly football they play or the even uglier people watching it.

Forget England, what about just London.

Imagine if Greater London bid on it's own for a World Cup. You need 9-12 stadiums I think. Well, we have them!

WEMBLEY,
TWICKENHAM
WHL
CHELSEA,
ARSENAL,
OLYMPIC,
TWICKENHAM
New QPR
Fulham
Watford
New Den
CRYSTAL PALACE

certainly a better idea than having one in Qatar

Question - when it rains properly hard at WHL the roof drips down on the front couple of rows - and that roof leans away from the pitch. Looking at the Chelsea roof it comes in towards the centre. When it rains really hard isn't this going to be a waterfall around the whole stadium or is it going to have the worlds largest gutter round the inside?

EDIT: Just seen that the top bit is hollow (lattice) and not solid.
