A ridiculous rumour but nevertheless a rumour...

According to the Italian press, Cesare Prandelli could bring Gabriel Paletta back to the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Italy boss has been linked with the manager’s post at White Hart Lane over the past days - speculation continuing to mount over whether Tim Sherwood will be kept on past the season’s end.

Prandelli has yet to announce whether he will continue on as head coach of the Azzurri after the World Cup, conceding his desire to return to daily work at the club level but admitting he remains “torn”.

A report in La Repubblica earlier this week alleged that a deal had already been put in place for the 56-year-old to take over at Tottenham upon his return from Brazil - and now claims have gone a step further.

According to Teleducato - a media outlet based in Emilia-Romagna - Prandelli would take former Liverpool man Paletta with him to north London to form the backbone of his defence.

The Argentine’s previous adventure in England was not a successful one, arriving at Anfield as a prodigy to great fanfare in July 2006 - only to be shipped back to his homeland a year later after a paltry three Premier League appearances.

Since joining Parma in 2010 he’s been able to revive his career in Europe, however, a constant fixture in the Crociati line-up that has attracted the attention of Serie A’s more illustrious sides.

Club CEO Pietro Leonardi even went so far as to value the centre-back at €35m last summer in an attempt to fight off interest - even as he has never before received a full international cap.

Paletta - who qualifies to represent Italy and has indicated he would accept a call-up - is thought to be close to receiving his chance as the Azzurri take on Spain in a March 5 friendly.

Teleducato maintain that competition for Paletta will be fierce come summer so any proposed operation would be difficult, though Prandelli’s presence could prove crucial to Spurs getting the 28-year-old’s signature.

Haha, paletta means dustpan or shovel in Italian. Don't know why, but this amuses me.

I guess there's going to be a few rumours on the back of any new coach rumours that arise
