Redknapp impressed by former Arsenal defender.

Harry Redknapp admits he may name William Gallas captain if the defender makes his Tottenham Hotspur debut against West Brom.

Gallas joined Spurs last month following his departure from arch-rivals Arsenal and is in line to feature at The Hawthorns.

Fellow centre-half Michael Dawson is out after suffering a knee injury on England duty and Ledley King may not be risked with next week's UEFA Champions League trip to Werder Bremen in mind.

If King is rested for the game at West Brom, Gallas could mark his Spurs bow by leading out the team.

"I have been very impressed with him as a fella," said Redknapp. "He could easily become a mainstay.

"I am even considering making him captain on Saturday. Thinking about it."

    Strong

Redknapp also reiterated his belief that Gallas is mentally strong enough to cope with any jeers that come his way following his time at Arsenal.

He added: "You have to be strong as a person to do that - it is easy not to have done that.

"He could have gone off and played somewhere else."

Regarding King, the Spurs boss believes it may be more beneficial to have his regular skipper in his side for Tuesday's opening Champions League group game away to Werder.

Redknapp said: "Both competitions are important to me, but we might just need Ledley's experience on Tuesday night in an away game in Germany in a Champions League game.

"If he plays Tuesday, he has got an extra day and I might get him for Tuesday and the following Saturday. It is a juggling act."

no way, it has to be earned

Why not, he has the experience and was even captain of arse anal for a couple of years, France also I believe.
Forget the fact that he played for the Arse, I'm sure he'd do well as captain just to show Arse Whinger what he's missing now that Cesc's heart is no longer in it.

what next...Judas is the ref ?!

I would rather King played in the PL, not the CL
  5. JC-Rule
    Why?

Because the PL is the priority, plus Gallas has way more CL experience.

As for all the "noooooo, not Gallas as captain" drama queens, if it was Van Der Vaart nobody would bat an eyelid even though he just joined. People really must get past the "he's played for the scum so he's an evil seed" garbage. We are in the big time this season. Leave the midtable table fans to concern themselves with childish dramas.

I choose to concern myself with victories.

The manager would not make gallas captain to spite the fans, he'd do it purely for football reasons. If HR feels Gallas is the best person for the job, then thats good enough for me.

I have no problem with Gallas being captain...when he puts on a spurs shirt and plays a game he is Spurs.

    Well said.

Good on ya mate, exactly my thoughts. This bloke acts like a wanker on the pitch as he is a winner! He doesnt like losing. To have that sort of character at the club is only a positive thing IMO.

Just hope the majority of our fans dont give him a tough time.

I think the problem with this is that the role of Captain is not just about who is experienced, it is to motivate, console, inspire the players and even the fans during a game. You need to have the respect of your peers to be able to do this.

IMO Gallas has shown himself to be a poor captain and an unpopular member of squads. I don't like him, however accept that if he plays well and trys to win for Spurs there is no reason to be churlish. But I can not condone making him captain. This would be another poor decision by Redknapp this week. Let's hope he gets his selection, formation and tactics right today!

I know, get over it. He's played at the highest level for years. Only a top class player
would have experience like him. I'm bored of this Gallas hate.

I concur - those having issues with Gallas, get over it.

I also think this is a bit of a f**k you to the fans from Harry. He was not happy when we were hissing and booing against Wigan - there is no doubt that Gallas is a leader and Harry may just give him the captaincy just to show us who is boss.

If he helps keep a clean sheet today, then why not allow him to be captain. especially when Dawson and King cannot play all the time. I bet if we win the league or get into the top four all will be forgiven for playing for Chelsea or Arsenal.
