Anthony Gardner has admitted he is ready to fight for his place in the starting eleven and show Martin Jol what he's made of when he comes up against Thierry Henry and Arsenal on Wednesday evening.

Gardner who is set to partner Michael Dawson at the back as skipper Ledley King is still out injured has only started three games so far this season but has been handed a lifeline at Spurs after the departure of fellow centre back Calum Davenport to West Ham.

Gardner revealed it was nice to be back in the first team, "It is nice to get a few games under my belt because I have had a bit of a wait this season through injury or people performing well in the team, it is testament to Ledley and Michael that they have been playing really well together. It is right that they should be playing because the team have been doing well.

"Opportunities come through injuries and suspensions and you have to try and come in and do your best. I am hoping to get a run of games under my belt."

Ahead of Wednesday's big clash with rivals Arsenal, Gardner pinpointed Henry as their dangerman and said, "It was enjoyable playing against Henry and I have always enjoyed my battles against him,"

"Everyone knows he is one of the best - if not the best striker in the world."

You just have to pit your wits against him and hopefully do well. The main thing is to come off the pitch knowing you have done your best against him.

"He is a quick player but my pace is one of my biggest attributes so his pace doesn't really worry me. It is when they try and play football around you that you have to be more aware."

God I love tabloid writing styles, so pointlessly over the top: in order -

"Gardner has admitted he is ready to fight for his place in the starting eleven"

    - Go on, you piece of slime Admit it! Admit it, damn you!!

"has been handed a lifeline at Spurs"

    - Had he been good enough he'd have been in the first team anyway and his being out of the team wasn't actually going to result in his death! (Though maybe a useful incentive for fringe players)

"Gardner revealed it was nice to be back in the first team"

    - No shit.

"Gardner pinpointed Henry as their dangerman"

    - Clearly a push by Gardner to become player-manager with this kind of insight, no?

Erm.. not sure he'll be up against Henry to be honest. More like Aliadiadi whatever

Poor old Tone with little match fitness he goes into an important game. Probably defending against henry one of the finest forwards in the world. If he makes a mistake or anything goes wrong he will be the scapegoat.

odd thing - he plays Henry very well

some of you guys are really twisted... Gardner is a committed spurs player and if you are a commited spurs fan then support your players.

Every player will have periods of low form, but that is when they need us to support them the most.

Lion, i think by now we know Gardners capabilities as hes been at Spurs for a long time, and i think he's not quite good enough. He's likley to have 5 good games then 1 shocker. He's always bloody injured as well! To be honest i think we need to replace Big Tone with better. Yes he plays for Spurs so we will support him but blind love for Spurs will not improve us. You need to be able to look at things more realistically. Just because someone plays for Spurs it doesn't mean they're good enough.

point taken Yidboy... But are you suggesting that you are better judge of player that MJ. As for a run of good games and then a stinker the same could be said of lennon, dawson, defoe, and berbatov. Even the king has benn subject to a dip in form lately. does this mean they are not PL players. I think you need to be a bit more realistic mate!!!The only thing that helps players to improve is support...

Gardner a committed Spurs player? If you knew your stuff you'd know that the only thing Gardner is committed to is partying!

That is the most worrying part in this story. I hope Jol cuts off all supplies to Henry with a terrific midfield.
Fabregas is the main threat atm! (and I'm glad RVP is out)
