Call me cynical, which you probably will, but... is it just me, or does anyone else think that maybe, just maybe, this whole Gareth Bale to MAD-rid story is just one big betting scam.

Reason for asking is that most of what's going on is heavily linked to SKY... allow me to further incriminate myself lol.

Aside from a plethora of tv channels, BSKYB also own SKY SPORTS NEWS... and SKY BET, On top of which, they are in association with TalkSport... the radio station that broke the "Bale told AVB he wants to leave" exclusive last week.

Having been instigated very loosely by TalkSPort (i.e, "we understand... that Bale has said etc"), the exclusive story has been "reported"... and once reported by TalkSport, SSN are then able to break their own story, it has been reported that ... and so it goes on.

It makes me think this way as aside from the quotes that Bale wants out... which i don't think he does, they also inform readers / viewers / listeners what the current odds of Bale leaving spurs are.

Then of course once reported on radio and tv, news corp and other associated press papers can get in on the action to further push the hype wagon along... safe in the knowledge that nuggets love a flutter.

Anyone.......?

But the odds on Bale leaving are so poor. If it was a betting scam, wouldn't they make the odds of him leaving a bit more enticing so as to make punters think they're onto some easy money?

Some sexy genius posted about this in the ITK Thread

There did seem to be hope from the media that he turned into an arsehole and didn't turn up where he was required to be.

What I'm finding far more disturbing is the way that SkySportsNews website has further integrated with SkyBet, by reporting a spurious story they can dramatically increase revenues at SkyBet, especially in transfer market betting

I would point out though that from a legal standpoint BSKYB is nothing to do with News Corp whatsoever, a stake of BSKYB is held by 21st Century Fox and Fox does not own any newspapers or radio stations in the United Kingdom. BSKYB have an association with TalkSPORT (Parent UTV) in advertising only, SkyBet and SkySports only provide paid advertising, all Sports news generation is done in house.

BSKYB also has no connection with any newspaper other than through paid advertisements which are probably reciprocated anyway.

As for SSN making spurious transfer stories to pad SKYBet bottom line then why not, it's clever unless you're on the receiving end of it. That it's then picked up by another media outlet is more likely because they're worried that the missed something huge but cover their arses with "reports suggest that" or similar.

Not at the start the weren't. They have dropped in correlation to the Bale wants out hype.

Not agreeing that it' a scam, I would have no idea as I don't bet, but he has a point.

I was thinking this but not from a UK perspective.

Real Madrid could really do with some money and I hope out "special" relationship is doing them a dirty favour

Really? It's abundantly clear to me that all these NEWS and RUMOURS are because Madrid want to actually buy the player not create some betting scam that even a 5 year old would detect. SC doesn't have many pointless threads but this is one of them.

Sorry to have a go but you two are barking up the wrong tree, go and post this on some socialist forum and you may find a bone

The problem with this theory is that the bookies just won't let you bet heavily on player transfer markets. It may be a scam to raise the player's profile for commercial reasons or to make it look like RM tried their best to buy Bale to appease their supporters (although I don't believe that either) but it's certainly not a betting scam. The amounts of money involved would be utterly trivial to the like of Real and Spurs and if there was any whiff of a scam the bookies simply wouldn't pay out. Not to mention it's illegal and those involved not only risk their careers but jail time.

very little money is bet on transfers

Simply not true, betfair has 244k matched on the bale transfer alone and betfair is unpopular when it comes to transfer betting due to the poor liquidity and just generally not being advertised much. Other bookmakers, namely, Skybet, Ladbrokes, possibly paddypower will have hundreds of thousands, if not over a mil staked on the bale transfer alone.

Oh and whilst we're on the topic of the bale transfer, I've hedged my bets on the bale trasnfer so I break even if he goes, about £400 up if he stays, thank you silly bookmakers!
