Don't think it's that far fetched to assume we would only get one of the two. In order for Utd or anyone to get Bale we would have to waver our first option. I also can see Poch wanting Martial over Bale because it would allow him to get more of his other targets aside from his younger age.

I thought your thinking was spot on mate & that was the only reason for that particular gif (y)

I can't see Real Madrid letting this play out the way Gareth wants it to...

Although I would love to see him at Spurs again - at 29 I can't see it happening. His wages would be sky high - and realistically there is maximum of three to four top years ahead... meaning the transfer fee would never be recouped.

What price do we put on trophies? Once we get to the next level it has to be about winning stuff as well. That imo was what Poch was saying in being brave....

Thanks for putting me straight mate. Tbh I thought it was plainly obvious considering it is commonplace with all the top players. I will remember in future some people just don't think about the obvious before they ask silly questions.
Fuck me you've been at the vinegar this morning, tetchy or what?

Not that I think this transfer is ever going to happen, but if all we’re considering with signings is resale value then don’t bank on us winning anything any time soon.

We have massively increased revenue, CL money again are building a state of the art stadium in order to compete with the bigger clubs.

What is the ultimate point of it all if we’re just going to continue a sell to buy/buy players so we can make a profit on them strategy.

I know we can’t embark on crazy spending, but we are not a poor club and at some point are going to have to think about taking some risks.

If we can afford players of Bale’s class and somehow get around the wages issue we shouldn’t be thinking about re sale value.

We certainly didn’t think about it when we wasted £30m on a 28 year old Sissoko.

I'll lay it out simply first. I think there's maybe a 0.01% chance Bale comes to us.

With that as a caveat, I would think that we can offer him something Real haven't. He would be the man. He would devastate teams in tandem with Kane and he would get the respect and reverence he clearly wants.

He's had years of ridiculous wages. He's won everything you dream of at club level and he's scored a CL final winning goal that would literally be beyond most kids wildest imagination.

He left us because he wanted to win stuff. He won stuff. The 0.01% chance is he looks at Spurs and thinks, with me they could win stuff.

And let's not fuck around. You don't get £200m for a player you've benched for almost 2 seasons.

Absolutely agree with Pochettino's commentary regarding being brave - however (as much as I would love to see Bale in a Spurs shirt) I can't see Levy entertaining this transfer opportunity.

If Bale goes to United - then I would be looking to sign either Rashford or Martial - and go in with an offering to make it happen. This may mean upwards of 40m. They all have great potential and won't mean we have to re-negotiate the contracts of our 'top' players. Perhaps even Lingard would be a good wee target to boast our squad.

I would love to be a fly on the wall when Levy and Pochettino discuss Sissoko...

I can't say I'll be disappointed if Bale doesn't come as it's a bit of a reach anyway and to be honest we can still really improve our team without having Bale in the equation. Like said though, I just hope he doesn't move to United, he would take them up a few levels for sure and it would be hard to see him banging in goals for such a team.

Well, we're almost up to 100 pages if wishful thinking.

We all know, deep down that this is exceedingly unlikely to happen but...

If I was Levy and was interested, I would keep this very quiet internally and deny everything because of the first option clause.

The last thing you want in this situation is a bidding war. IF, just if, Madrid needed/wanted to let Bale go for whatever reason then this would have to happen late in the window with little to no interest shown from potential suitors to keep the price down.

As I said, ifs, buts and unlikely maybes. But I'll hold onto the ITK that he would prefer us if he was to move, and run with that until the window closes.

Would you happen to know how reliable / trustworthy The Times is?

I only ask because if you go to Google & type in "Tottenham have buy back clause for Gareth Bale", there are many articles stating that that's the case, but each and every one of them states.. "And a report in The Times says it is understood Spurs do have a buy-back clause for Bale, which was inserted in the deal which took him to Real for a world-record fee in 2013."

Haha, assumed it was more a "youve been smoking some shiiieeet mate". God, got that one wrong.

No mate, not at all. As soon as I finished reading your original post, I loved the thinking behind it & then Louis Balfour (the character in the gif I used) instantly popped into my head (y)

"It means his likely transfer fee and wages would make a Tottenham bid unrealistic."
Nothing new there just opinion to be honest.
