Gareth Bale transfer: Tottenham could beat Manchester United to reunion with Real Madrid star willing to take pay cut

The 28-year-old will discuss his future this week and would be willing to make compromises on financial demands if a deal could be struck to bring him back to north London

Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring developments with Gareth Bale and may yet launch an audacious bid to bring the star back to the club this summer, with the 28-year-old’s representatives set to meet with Real Madrid to sort his future out this week.

Bale followed his match-winning substitute appearance in the Champions League final with the announcement that he would have to consider his future if he would not be a starter in future, and his agent Jonathan Barnett is set to sit down with the Bernabeu hierarchy over the next few days.

His exit is by no means certain since Bale is a personal favourite of president Florentino Perez, even if manager Zinedine Zidane is not so warm to him, and the situation is further complicated by Cristiano Ronaldo’s future.

The Portuguese also cast doubt on whether he would stay at the club for next season, and the bottom line is that one of the two leaving would make it far easier for the other.

The link between Manchester United and Bale has long existed, with the player now said to see Old Trafford as a preferred destination.

They would also be better placed to match the forward’s current wages, but that is precisely why United are now cool on the player, especially at his age and at this point of his career as well as after signing Alexis Sanchez.

Sources close to Bale say he would also be very open to a return to Spurs, and would be willing to make compromises on financial demands if a deal could be structured.

With manager Mauricio Pochettino having urged the club to make statements in the market this summer, those close to the hierarchy say Tottenham would be willing to offer a deal similar to Harry Kane’s, of around £200,000 a week with bonuses.

Sources say that Spanish tax means Bale only gets £200,000 in hand at Real Madrid, but that other commercial deals related to being at the club take him up to way over £500,000.

I like Miguel Delaney, one of my favourite journos on twitter. If he says he has sources I'd be willing to believe him.

I believe @Trix and @Hercules info more, but things could change. Will be interesting to see if anything comes out after his talks from Perez and Zidane.

Guillem Ballbag has said today Bale has been told he is not for sale, so adds more weight to the ITK info.

Lol

Monday: Spurs sources say there is no realistic prospect of Bale returning to the club as they can't afford to match his wages.

Tuesday: Sources close to Bale say he would be willing to make compromises on financial demands if a deal could be struck for a return to Spurs.

Wednesday: Spurs sources say "I love you Gareth. Do you love me? Tick yes or no"

I don't think he's ever once given anyone the impression that he'd want to go to United but I can find a pile of articles with direct quotes made over the years saying that he'd like to come back to Spurs. Maybe he will go to United because the financial pressures are overwhelming for him to do so (he generates a lot of money that doesn't just go into his pocket) but I still don't think he'd choose United if the financials were equal.

To be fair to the writer I don't think he's implying the favouritism to Utd as part of this piece, he's linking his earlier article, the info for which probably came from a different source.

This is actually quite interesting.

"Sources close to Bale say he would also be very open to a return to Spurs, and would be willing to make compromises on financial demands if a deal could be structured."

This from someone who has attributed their name to the article and iirc has been good in the past, versus unattributed articles from the BBC and Sky which effectively amounted to, "Bale not coming because we don't think Spurs could afford him."

There is far more substance to this than either of the pieces put out by Sky or the BBC.

That's not to say I think it will happen, because I don't, but there are reasons to think that this article is far more reliable than the others.

Edit: FWIW the author has also said that he thinks Bale's first choice would be United. But I don't think that and this article are mutually exclusive.

Agree, but they're not equal. So sadly we know how this ends.

But you've left out the bit where it says Utd are his "preferred destination", meaning if he can reduce his wages demands for us then he'd do so for Utd.

Yeah, I edited my post to include that piece. I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. United could not want him for other reasons, for example.

He ain't coming. But is this the first instance of media reporting that he'd be willing to take a pay cut. Our reasons for not getting him have been mostly financial according to the likes of Trix.

And Trix is usually sharing his information explicitly on his understanding at that point in time and that things can change.

I’ll stop grasping my straws...

I think IF we're going to make any kind of move for Bale, it'll be right at the last minute. I can see it now, if Bale is still at Madrid on deadline day, Levy will make a move.

Having said all that, he's going to end up at United isn't he... :shifty:

United are Adidas sponsored, as is Bale. They would definitely help with the financials.

Don’t agree with that. It’s just too material a move to leave it late. Either we’d save an enormous amount of firepower until too late and potentially not get him and miss out on others or buy the others and by getting GB too, risk going way beyond our financial envelope for the window. I appreciate there’s a range of spend and that it flexes around the opportunities out there but GB isn’t just a bit of flex - it’s smashing the envelope and then some.

Us actually playing him will 'help with the financials'. Pretty worthless having your merch investment sulking on the bench as he has for most of the last 2 years.

Weirdly it does kinda put the kibosh that the journo's were briefed by Spurs to say he won't be coming back or even if it was leaked by the club that we couldn't afford him and his team are responding with he'd take a pay cut if he gets image rights or bonus payments

Various reports in the media are claiming that he is earning 400k a week but might be willing to make a pay cut to join us. With renewal of Kane's contract where it's reported that he'll earn about 100k a week plus bonuses, Bale joining for the same is a fat chance imo

You don't go from 400k a week to 100k plus some bonuses..

Kane might be going to go to 200K a week, according to ITK and media reports.

Kane's new deal will be 200k, not 100k.
