WHIZKID Gareth Bale snubbed a £10milllion move to Tottenham in order to join Manchester United in the summer.

The Southampton starlet visited Tottenham after the clubs agreed a fee.

But Bale, 17, decided to delay making a decision on his future until the end of the season.

The teenager, who faced Sheffield Wednesday last night, is keen to go to Old Trafford and United boss Alex Ferguson sees him as a long-term successor to Ryan Giggs.

Fergie has bid £8m for the left-back with up to £3m of that linked to appearances.

Arsenal are also interested, but will have to match Southampton’s £10m asking price.

Bale, who has 18 months left on his current contract, turned down an improved offer from Saints worth £4,000 a week.

But St Mary’s boss George Burley said: “I said all along Gareth would stay with us at least until the end of the season.

“His parents are happy for him to continue to learn here and are pleased he’s getting a regular game. It makes sense.

“I know how hard it’s been for Gareth to concentrate with all this transfer talk going on. I’ve had to put an arm round him and give him a hug.”

Southampton have brought in Poland striker Marek Saganowski, 28, from French side Troyes on loan.

And Saints’ midfielder Simon Gillett, 21, has gone to League One Blackpool until May.

Err, where does it mention him joining ManUtd in the summer? What a stupid article

I always thought we'd be lucky to land him. In summer the fight for his signature will be even stronger. We played it right going in strong and trying to steal a march on United; we couldn't have done much more to get him.

Just a page filler isn't it?

Basically if Spurs offered £10m and southampton accepted it then it's just down to the player (and his advisors) and if he then didn't come it's because he doesn't want to.
Danial Levy said "we are happy to give him more time" which actually means that Bales said no and we can't convince him.
It was always a long shot if we were up against aresenal and Man Utd.
The up side is that we are going for players of this standard and people are taking us seriously.

I don't think you could blame him if he wanted to go to United - we'd be a little more likely to give him first team footy, but Fergie wouldn't spend that much on him and then leave him in the ressies either. It may just be that he wants to finish the season with Southampton, which is probably an even more sensible idea. Good on him for taking his time I say, the offers will still be rolling in come the summer and maybe we'll still get him.

:hello: Not worth £10 m anyway! Would rather have us to sign Baines or Bridge. At least we know they can play in the premiership!

So f*ck off schoolboy! You'll be their 3rd choice

Since he can cross, there's the possibility that Fergie either keeps him as LB or tries him out at LW (ditto with Evra). If Richardson can be that piss-poor and yet still be fielded...

If he haven't sign with ManU, we still can try for next few months to convince him to join in summer...

Have to say I would rather we spent 10 mil on a proven left winger than a 17 year old unproven player with potential.

regardless of whether we get him or not in the summer, Im not convinced he's the right player for us at the moment. IMO i thought BAE had a good game last night and should be given the chance to come on. An established full back would be much more appropriate given where we are right now, adding further stability to what at times can be a shaky defence. I know that its a long term policy to bring on young british players but 10m for a full back is a huge amount to pay. I know its hypothesising but it would appear man yoo is his preferred choice...maybe Heinze would fancy a move to London and come to Spurs, which ultimately wouldnt be a bad thing.

Solve the LW conundrum, solve 1/2 (if not all) the LB issues. BAE is no longer the main problem, at least at the moment.

Would have like him but he can go fk himself now.

I like the idea of Heinze too, stability while the youngsters learn.

Sadly, I don't think he ever wanted to join us. he's a gooner fan, so that or Man U before us.
credit to the team for trying..............
