This is a no-brainer. I'm sure it's going to be contractually complicated, but with interest as recently as early last month, bringing in this kind of quality for no transfer fee at his age is incredible. I'd take Martins on a free over pretty much every other WF we've been rumored with. Have to think Levy would jump at this situation.
I think getting the best player possible is far more worthwhile than getting somebody just because they are cheap.

Plus these players will be wanting big sign on fees.

Portuguese press have linked us to him again today.

It is true that Sporting's big players are all looking to have their contracts terminated, with Thursday this week being the deadline.

The club is imploding.

Never seen him play personally, but it would be unfair to judge based on this year's Portuguese Cup Final, given the circumstances which surrounded it.
It would but I'm not basing him off of one game alone. I've watched him countless times and once you get past his incredible dribbling he flatters to deceive.
I'd rather splash out on Zaha, he's far better in front of goal and doesn't look like he's falling over when he strikes the ball.

Gelson is like a crossover between Sterling and Gervinho, we already have Lucas for the electric dribbler role.

There's some Real strange shit going on over in Portugal.
Similar happened in 1993. Known as the 'Hot summer of 93' when 3 Benfica players terminated their contracts over unpaid wages and 2 of them signed for Sporting.

Benfica's owner sees it as payback: https://www.abola.pt/Nnh/Noticias/Ver/735093 (in Portuguese)

Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira has promised to the shareholders in General Assembly that he will try to hire one of the players who rescinded a contract with Sporting.

"This year I'm going to do a little crazy that maybe I should not do. But I will. It does not matter if it's Bruno, whether it's Antonio or Joaquim. Twenty-five years ago they played with us and now they do not play anymore,

A Bola reckons Gelson and Bruno Fernandes will go there.

All I can say is that Martins' highlight reel looks bloody amazing - which given the comments above shows that they can be misleading. Nothing particularly earth shattering...

I heard the same from a Portuguese mate yesterday. Word over there is that Benfica are taking Gelson and Bruno Fernandes.

Let's see though...

That would be amazing, especially as we don' seem to be interested and you'd imagine Chelsea and the Goons would be all over these based on their financial restraints this summer. Would be typical of both of their luck if they snapped up some free transfers like this.

A gooner 'mate' of mine is 100% convinced he's going there, I'm gonna be unbearable for him if he goes to Benfica now. Supposedly he has signed a pre-contract after his agent had dinner with the Benfica chairman last night.

I'm having withdrawal after the great stream of ITK snippets this last couple of days. Would be interested to see if there was any truth in this or the other players

Have to admit I've seen a bit more of him since last summer.

He might get a few goals, but that league is quite poor. He's quick, but never appears to be in total control at times. Just seems a bit erratic to me.

They mean to terminate their contract. They argue that Sporting have broken the contract clause guaranteeing their personal safety.
Obviously a court would have to grant that request, but you'd think they have a strong case...

If you get battered by the fans, the inferred mutual trust and confidence is blown apart, I'd guess.

I agree. But getting someone *just* because they're cheap isn't the issue here--he's arguably one of the most talented WF on the market. We wouldn't be losing quality with Martins, and surely his sign on/agent fee won't come close to the rumored 50m for Martial. That's why I think it would be such a great transfer.
