He is a good squad player but not even worth what Newcastle paid for him so glad we pulled out of this.

Strange signing. Always seemed to play best for Newcastle as a no responsibilities attacking midfielder, but Liverpool are already overloaded with those. Seems a premium price too. Maybe I've missed something.

At the end of the day, they've paid £25m for someone that i'd put on a par with Gylfi Sigurdsson. A good player, but nowhere near worth what they paid and he doesn't 'improve' them other than in squad depth. Deals like this make me so glad we are so well run. We were interested as he's a good player and with him playing for a relegated club, we probably thought we'd get a decent deal, but as soon as we realised the figures Newcastle weren't budging from, we weren't interested.

He'd have been a good squad player for us if we could have got him for a cheap fee, but at that price, no thanks.

Gini Wijnaldum has revealed that it was the Jurgen Klopp factor which convinced him to snub Tottenham and Everton before completing a £25million move to Liverpool.

The Dutch international was a man in demand this summer after suffering relegation from the Premier League with Newcastle United.

Spurs offered Champions League football and fellow countryman Ronald Koeman wanted him at Goodison, but a meeting with the Reds boss convinced the attacking midfielder that Anfield was the right destination for him.

Hmm... kinda think we didn't even make a bid... so it wasn't like he have much of a choice. not sure if anyone else bother to match what Ashley wanted for him. i am sure he is happy that he isn't playing in the championship.

Midfielder Wijnaldum, 25, revealed: “I went to Mauricio Pochettino’s house before I spoke to Liverpool.

“After the meeting I told my agent ‘I’m going to join Spurs’.

“Pochettino is a terrific manager, if you look at the way his teams play. I was impressed with what he had to say.

“He set out his way of working and I was convinced he could improve any player no matter what age they are. His method gives players such specific duties they become better as a result.

“I saw Spurs as being a very good fit for me — but we were unable to agree financial terms with them.

“With hindsight, though, that was not a disaster.”

That is because Liverpool boss Klopp was on hand to sign the former PSV Eindhoven star.

Wijnaldum hit 11 goals in 40 games for the Toon last season but was unable to prevent Rafa Benitez’s side being relegated.

Wijnaldum said: “Pochettino was terrific but then Jurgen Klopp made me feel even more relaxed.

“From the moment I first spoke with him I knew that I wanted to join Liverpool.

“I fell for Klopp — hook, line and sinker. He invited me to his house and before I was even inside he was asking me why I’d been on the bench last season.

“I explained it was a decision taken by Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez and he said he didn’t understand it.

“We then began talking and I got more enthusiastic by the minute.

So in a nutshell, Spurs would have made me a better player but then Liverpool offered me more money...

Gutted we missed out, top attitude on this guy

Amazing lines those, everything about Poch is specific, references how we play and how Poch improves players and then he gets to Klopp and makes some vague comments about how he made him feel relaxed oh and Klopp asked him why he was on the bench. Feels like Poch wanted to talk abot how he would integrate and improve Wijnaldum and Klopp just stroked his ego.

They're both doing good management then but just in different ways.

Regardless of whether YOU think he's a good player or not OUR manger wanted him, so much so he even invited him to HIS house. It is quite damning of our ambition that we failed to get the player OUR manager clearly wanted. £22m rising to £25m is far from expensive in the current market for PL clubs!!!

It wasn't the fee it was the wages.
