Manchester City are favourites to seal a deal for Barcelona starlet Giovani dos Santos, the player's father has confirmed.

The young Mexican seems set to leave Camp Nou this summer and a host of clubs are now jostling to seal his signature.

But City look to be in pole position ahead of the likes of Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool.

The player's father - former Brazilian international Zizinho - has confirmed to the Mexican press that City have made their move.

"The news is certain, but the subject is in the hands of the agent," Zizinho revealed.

"We would prefer much discretion until the end of the season.

"We will not decide, but Barca know the situation as we have had contact with sporting director Txiki Beguiristain.

"Our objective now is for him to finish the season with Barcelona at a good level and then we will speak."

English interest

Zizinho then confirmed that City were amongst a host of English clubs in the hunt.

"Other English clubs have demanded information about Giovani but the main chance is City," he added.

Barcelona have a wealth of forward options which is why Giovani will seemingly be allowed to leave - with former youth colleague Bojan now very much the talk of Catalunya.

It is believed Barca are willing to let Giovani go for 10 million euros (£7.8million), although they are also open to the idea of a season-long loan but any club would have to take over the whole of his salary.

Giovani's current deal has three-years left to run.

I know we were linked with him in January but i was not annoyed that it didnt come off. He barely stands the physical side of the game in Spain, he would certainly not in the prem. I have watched him all season and Bojan is by far the better of the two. He seems to have got this wonderkid reputation but believe me if he was that good after breaking into the first team squad Barca would not let him go so easy.

Can't see it without a manager

Call me a cynic, but on the financial side I don't think Man City are a football club at the moment. They're a giant laundromat.

Imo their accountants are quite likely to spend money on assets they think will hold their value or even appreciate. If Gio Dos Santos is available for £7.8 million, then he may be considered a good "asset" to have on the club's books. After all, Chavski signed Sidwell on a Bosman, hardly played him, and are now looking to sell him for £5 million.

Of course, you can't run a proper football club like that....

I also agree that I'm not sure Gio would be successful in the EPL at this stage. He needs to get stronger and grow up (he's fairly selfish as a player). And Barca's apparent willingness to sell suggests they don't think he's a potential superstar.

Amazing, considering he'd been hailed as the next big thing about a year ago.

Dos Santos is the least of Barcas worries at the moment in terms of who to get rid of surely?? least he is still young and can still potentially be good. most their squad is a shambles at the moment. they all look stunned as to how they were playing so badly yesterday

Two reasons for letting him go are: he's not made the progress expected from him while he/his agent are demanding a crazy salary increase.
Let Citeh brake the bank to get him.

Hmmm. I love the way these agents just hang the names of the likes of Chelsea / Man U etc out when looking to place their client with a club with less status. I would suggest the top four haven't scouted him in ages, having made their collective minds up about his potential.

Those type of players have to come up the hard way - ie mature then get their recognition.

Didn't Fergie say recently that there is one club in the PL where the chairman faxes the manager the team sheet on the day of the game. My money would be on that club being man city...

Not with Elano playing regularly at right back these days, if that was true, surely it would be Chelski?

Chelsea was my 2nd guess but Sheva never playing put me off it being Roman.

Other than those two ar there any other contenders? I think not.

Dos Santos is all about potential, and if he doesnt fulfill his potential then he wont be worth the money.

He always looks 'lively' when I've seen him but without looking the real deal. Would be interesting to see him in the premier league
