Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is ready to give Giovani dos Santos a chance to shine after holding a meeting with the youngster's parents when he lost his way last season.

Giovani is set to feature in the Carling Cup third-round clash at Preston but his future at Spurs looked bleak last season when he was pictured looking the worse for wear at a Christmas party and was late for training sessions.

Redknapp met with the 20-year-old's parents - his father is a former professional footballer known as Zizinho - and has seen an improvement in the Mexico international.

"He has had a great season with Mexico so this is a big test for him," Redknapp said.

"The penny has dropped, about applying himself and adapting himself.

"His dad was a top player, I've spoken to his mum and dad, they came to see me. He's a smashing kid but found it hard to get into training on time.

"He has realised he can't do that here, he has toed the line and got fitter and that's the key. He let himself down last year, he wasn't in good shape, he didn't look after himself.

"Now he's fitter, leaner and has great ability. He's only a kid and if he develops, he can be a top player."

David Bentley will also be given a chance at Deepdale after falling behind Aaron Lennon in the pecking order.

"It's not easy for him I suppose, he doesn't see a lot of light at the end of the tunnel, he sees Lennon playing well," Redknapp said.

"All he can do is perform when he's in the team, work hard and show a good attitude and then his chance will come."

Redknapp wants his players to show the same passion as Gary Neville displayed during his controversial celebration during the Manchester derby.

United captain Neville raced towards City fans when Michael Owen grabbed a last-gasp winner at Old Trafford and while some have seen the incident as inflammatory, Redknapp admired the passion of the veteran.

"You look at Gary Neville, a man who has won everything there is to win - championship after championship after championship," Redknapp said.

"The excitement he showed at his team winning and he was only a sub.

"He wasn't sitting on the bench with his arms folded. He was jumping higher than Fergie (Sir Alex Ferguson) when they scored and that's why they are where they are. That is why they succeed."

Redknapp had the same spirit at Portsmouth when they were promoted from the Championship and he feels Spurs are on the right track, even if the manager has questioned it at times.

The trip to Preston could be a test of who genuinely cares.

"I remember losing at Bolton last season, getting beaten and looking at the bench," Redknapp said.

"I think two of them were asleep with hats pulled down and blankets over them.

"I said 'I'm sorry to drag you up here, I know it's cold and you could be home with the missus with a cup of tea. It's hard for 30 grand a week to watch a game'."

As a Gio Fanboy, its great to see light at the end of the tunnel for him, and also finally a proper harry explanation!

Yes! Go Gio...We want you to be a first team regular. But offcourse you have to deserve it. Thought you showed some class the last time i CC.

I know this is an article about Gio, and I hope he plays tonight, but those last few sentences were quality

What I get from this is that we have a manager who isn't scared to kick butt and upset his players if he feels they deserve it. Too many of our pampered players have been up their own asses for too long, only producing performances when they felt like it. At least Harry will tell them as it is and won't stand for any prima dona attitudes. If any player thinks he's bigger than our club, ship him out asap and let him eat humble pie for some championship team.

As long as Harry doesn't cut off his nose to spite his face!

    Like it!!!

Sounds like Harry has told his old man and Gio's in for a kick up the arse from him!! He was a quality player and will no doubt tell gio if he is ever to reach any where near his heights he will have to work!!

After Gio's transfer he said he wanted 1st team football, he obviously made this clear when he signed and thought all he has to do is turn up and he's playing!!

I really really hope this is now the spring board for Gio to get into gear and become a really good player for us!

As Modric is out at the mo theres a place up for grabs, Niko, Gio and Bentley will all be hoping to get there chance, i know some will say it isnt there preferred position (Gio and Bentley) but they just need game time at the mo, who cares where it is in the team!

Yes funny stuff. Redknapp seems very down to Earth. He seems
as offended by players wages as we are sometimes.

Its not just about 'their preferred position' its about the team balance, i wouldnt like to see Bentley on the left wing, he wouldnt give us any more than Keane does there, so for me there is only Gio and Kranjcar who could play there while Modrics out and retain the way we play.

It really does sound like Gio had all but given up, i guess he came here believing he would have a few training sessions and go straight into the 1st team.

unrelated but has anyone else heard that Judas has left Notts by mutual consent after just one game, their chairman said its no use keeping someone who dosn't want to be here and he has aspirations of playing in the 2010 world cup, i wonder if 'Arry has sounded him out as cover while Woody and King are out ... lol

I rate Gio highly great skill and any1 whos scored 4 barca must be good no matter how old they are. i no he has had a few problems and i went 2 spurs last year at the lane vs Shakter (i think thats how u spell it) in the UEFA Cup and yh our squad was young but he started and looked the biz and scored his 1st goal (which was a peach) @ the Lane he had the same kinda probs as modric trying 2 adapt 2 the prem coz they r both small and skinny they just got knocked off the ball every 2secs but the difference is modric got a good run in the team and worked on it and has adapted well all Gio needs is a run in the team either play every cup game ( CC,FA) and a few prem while modders is out if he plays 2nyt he'll either set up 1/2 or score or if were lucky both lol COYS

i think we might get 2 the final of the CC again if we try and all squad stay fit

Injured after 15 mins tonight unfortunately for him.

Sorry to point out what should have been an obvious question, but why are all these "quotes" only in something called Sporting Life and nowhere else? Have they got a Harry exclusive - which they would have shouted about from the rooftops no doubt?

But hey, let's not let the obvious question get in the way of smug "there you are, all the answers you demanded about Gio" line of comments. How easy.
  13. Spurs_Bear
They are on Sky Sports as well.

So the 'blind faith' that people show in Harry as our manager is not ok by you.....but you can show the same faith in Gio and even question the validity of quotes that come out from the manager when you finally get the explanation you have been craving.

Has "Double Standards Dave" come out to play again???

ps all we need now is 'PistolP' to reply to your post with a line of 6 clapping hand signs and we have pretty much the content of every post that ever involves Gio on this forum.
