As Hoddle said, you have to take that chance. If the Villa player gets something on it, fair enough. But he was indecisive and it was a very soft goal.

I have lost a lot of confidence in Gomes. I'm not saying I want rid but he has been shaky for the past few months-nowhere near as good as he was last season.

Dont be daft. that wasnt a gk error. Just a fluke cross that went in.

I dont blame him for the goal at all however i am worried about him. To many times he punches the ball when he should be catching it and he fumbled the ball a couple of times today when the Gomes of last season would have held it. He just looks very nervous to me at the moment - that said he is still an outstanding shot stopper.

No way was he to blame for the goal today. If he had committed and Collins? had got a head on it and it went straight down the middle he would have looked a complete idiot

He was indecisive. And the guy is making me nervous these days. So much so, that I refuse to spring to his defence these days. When he was rolling around on the ground, I feared for him. When he starts that carry-on, I expect him to fuck up.

Mind you, I wasn't impressed with the defending that lead to it.

All that said, he might do a Palacios, but the bottom line is that he's not on top of his game.

if he had of commited he would've went flying into Collins and took him and the ball out

I reckon a fully confident Gomes would've done just that

Hell fire ive seen many a goal go in like that and it won't be the last. Horrible ball to have to deal with, its neither a cross nor a shot. Maybe Kaboul could have followed the flight of the ball, i think he just tried to block collins off so Gomes could come and collect(which didn't happen) as collins got infront of Kaboul. I don't really see what Gomes could have done he did make plenty of other punches from crosses in and did come out and flatten one of their players in making a clearance.

I started this thread. He wasnt to blame for the goal.

What he was thinking when he brought Heskey down is another matter.

Couple of blinding saves plus a few moments of madness. Typical Gomes performance really.
The one thing I really hate about football these days is the penalties given for the softest reasons or because someone 'won' it. The one thing the ref got right for me was the fact that it wasn't a penalty. Gomes went for the ball and collided with Heskey as they reached the ball. Big deal. They almost simultaneously touched the ball. The endless reviews to see if Heskey touched it first so the studio bods can call it a penalty was just ridiculous posturing, as ever.

Another silly decision which could have cost us a pen but apart from that I thought he was excellent

Helped out his defence on numerous occassions and made some good saves

Still much rather have a keeper that tries to help out and relieve pressure rather than someone who just sticks on his line

Just needs to work on the 50/50 stuff and probably stay at home unless its 60/40 making sure he gets to it first If he does decide to come otherwise he's f&cked

the problem with Gomes is you know hes gonna have a blinder in a semi but get sent of in the final.

Chicken or the egg situation.

The goal was in no way shape or form his fault.

Although, in hindsight, he could have come out and clattered defender, but in those situations you are better off letting the defender deal with them - cracking free kick, exactly how you should do those though.

I don't worry at all about Gomes in goal. Another 3 points tomorrow, and hopefully a clean sheet will restore some of the confidence back, but the last 2 or 3 games, we have looked much better at the back as a whole.

If he'd been in a position to stop the cross sneaking in, he wouldn't have had a hope of making a save if Collins had connected.
