Gomes: Tottenham treated me badly (and AVB did not want Hugo Lloris)

Don't think he can have too bad an opinion of the Club. My grandson has seen him and his son at Academy training on Friday evenings.

We paid what? 9m for him and he went for nothing. It wasn't just Gomes who came out of it badly. He made so many high profile blunders that the confidence of the back line was shot to bits. Wish him well though.

He made some legendary saves (2 from van Persie and the header from Terry stands out) while at Spurs and, yes, he as my favourite player back then.
But one could see he was a very emotional and passionate player/person; which may explain why he went from hero to zero to hero to zero so fast.
It did not help at all that 1) he played behind a back-4 that did not nurture confidence in goalies 2) the British press was on his case right away making a meal out of any tiny error (and the Spurs supporters eventually brought into it as well).
However, it was not all Spurs' fault the he could not find a new club, as he was offered loan deals with several clubs but refused to take pay cuts. Particularly when he had a the chance to at least get into the Brazilian WC squad I am surprised he did not at least take a pay-cut and try get into the WC squad. If he really believed he was a good as Lloris he should have believed he was good enough for the Brazilian WC squad as well.

It says quite a bit about his mentality that Tony would not trust him to come on off the bench.

He spent a great deal of his time here playing under a defense of

Corluka - King/Woodgate - Dawson/Bassong - BAE

Considering Corluka and Dawson were actually good at that stage, it would be criminal to blame them for Gomes' deficiencies in the box.
Nope. The wobbles were very real. Short memories in this place.

My son met him in restaurant in London not long after he arrived, late in first year approx. Although his english was poor he was very friendly. But he said did not like so much at Spurs and may be looking to move to Italy or somewhere soon. My son got the impression he was bit of a moaner back then as entourage had quites heated discussions, sadly in portuguese.

Some great saves, some howlers and a shit load of wonga.

The bit about AVB not wanting Lloris but DL did is seriously worrying (now). If the chairman keeps muscling in on the Head Coach's job - erm....does this happen with other clubs?

No he just got figured out. He would come for everything and miss. So opposing teams would just float one in the box, wait for him to flap and then just knock it in.

.

I am going to suggest and likely to be an unpopular comment that Gomes was spoiled by Spurs Goalkeeping coaching.

I believe when he first came he was much more likely to try and catch crosses than punch, that he owned more of the penalty area than he did later It was commented on that he took risks trying to catch crosses.

His approach modified and it coincided with change of coaches so not only got Spursed on the field but in training as well. Some will say you have to adapt to the league you play in but you cannot remove the essence that makes you good

He was undoubtedly a good goalkeeper

A real interesting comment
It presupposes that the only back4 and goalkeeper defend. Spurs real problem during this era and during Robbos's time was that the mf were not set up to defend properly when we did not have the ball. We allowed the opposition the time to exploit our lack of cover.
We had to score 3 to win games This is exciting and if you win more than you lose great but just bashing the defensive players

So why did he end at Watford?

I love the saying he got Spursed. What does it mean? Did Bale get spursed? Modric? Carrick? Berba?

three years in the wilderness takes it toll on who will take a punt on a player

Clubs will be influenced by both his reputation, which I think it a little unfair, and that his inactivity.

Everybody is getting excited about AVB not wanting Lloris
Posters are taking the same poetic licence they accuse journo's of. It is reported that Gomes said AVB didnt ask for him. That could mean a whole host of other things including as an example He did not ask for him but was delighted that DL got him

Also didn't we agree a fee with PSV but he wouldn't take a cut in wages? £65k a week for sitting on the bench, my heart bleeds.
According to who?

Gomes is not saying anything new here.
I'm sure I read at the time that Lloris was a present from Joe Lewis.
I don't think AVB nor Levy knew much about it.
It is all consistent, but of course it all could be nonsense.

ITK, journalists, they. You know the ones that make us wear tin foil hats and rape cats in serial boxes.

Also it's "according to whom". At least that's what my aunt taght me. But she was arrested for eating an owl in London zoo so what does she know?

Interesting point but how does it explain our rooted-to-the-line 'away'-screaming Brad Friedel? The American must be stubborn to the extreme then.

Gomes and Bentley are cases I can't fathom. For all I know the press loves a howler to chew on and keepers are the easiest target.
